    I want to thank you for your review on Cobi sets. Even after two years, your review still holds value and remains one of the most detailed opinion pieces I have come across. I appreciate the effort you put into it. Your review, along with Dr. Jake's, has convinced me to give Cobi a try. I am glad to know from some comments here that the sprue cutoff issues you encountered are not the norm, as I was worried about that. I am also interested in the modern military theme, but unfortunately, Brickmania only ships from the US, which makes it too expensive for me as I am based in Europe. Therefore, I have decided to go for Cobi. Thank you again for your helpful review!

    I recently discovered Cobi and have had a blast with their WW2 models. Their F4U Corsair is truly beautiful to me and they got a M4A3E2 Jumbo coming out this year with Bastogne markings I’m super exited for. Their new King Tiger even has a removable engine and it looks snazzy.
    That being said you’re right about the mold lines. As a modeler they annoy me. Though I find *a lot* of the times when I see them I can switch the brick around so the mold line doesn’t face outwards. If it really is bothering you I suggest deconstructing it a bit and seeing if you flip the piece around so the mold line is not visible. It works a lot. Not often, but it’s helps a good bit.
    I will say that also Cobi models typically feel sturdier to me, but then sometimes they have tiny fidgety parts. Like if I dropped a lego Y wing it would shatter but if I dropped a Cobi Mustang the tail would pop off *but* the landing gear on the Mustang always wants to pop off, if you understand what I’m saying.
    I think the only model I didn’t love to an extremely high degree was their panzer 1 Ausf A- the turret on that is uh, not well constructed. It was frustrating to get together right and stay on. Though in retrospect I think Cobi has to argue and go back and forth between build quality, and historic accuracy, so here they leaned to historic accuracy more, and I mean the Panzer 1 Is a *weird* looking tank and they nailed the look and it’s a tiny tank so they didn’t have a lot of space to work with so I find it forgivable. I guess if I had to choose accuracy or sturdiness I’d lean towards accuracy as well.
    Great video overall! You were very fair and I appreciate your history and connect to it.

    Cobi seems to be the top brand for vehicles, ships and aircraft models made from building bricks.
    To avoid the visibility of production marks on the sides of the plates just turn them inwards - and you will hardly see an open stud on a finished model, the top layer is mostly made with tiles or tiles modified... gives a great look and makes the models more accurate.
    Cobi also has various models of civil cars, some youngtimers of the era of socialist countries, some actual cars and some Italian sportcars - all looking very accurate, scale 1:35, and still made from building bricks!
    You have too look twice to believe it!
    It can be said that Cobi models are better than Lego and they are not so costly, besides the fact that Lego doesn’t produce any military models: You make the better deal with Cobi models.

    The funny part about that set is the officer is Kilgore from Apocalypse now! They like to sneak famous profiles in sets, even had Rambo! I watched a video break down of it. Even the MG gun has appropriate action and lever movement. I doubt I’ll collect many of them but I’m going for at least this one, and hoping they swing a sherman at some point. I love that they have this option. As I buy the sets as toys for both me & my sons, I noticed one thing that COBI lacks - the minifigs cant really sit properly. I assume this is due to the protections that LEGO has on their minifig design, but LEGO minifigs can sit in LEGO chairs and not fall off no matter what you do. Sadly, Cobi did not find a good solution to that, so even if model has a place for the figure to sit in, it will not really remain attached. This is small problem for an adult, that handles the toy delicately, but for my sons this is an issue as the figurines keep falling out. At least in the fighter planes the figure cannot really fall out (cause the windshield blocks it) but it still can start rattling inside while dogfighting :)
    I still buy them tho. Those are some great sets, and whatever imperfections they might have they do not have competition in the niche they are in.

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  Před 2 lety

      They definitely have work to do on their "action figures." I'm also not a fan of their design. A little creepy since they made them somewhere between mini-fig and anatomically correct proportions. Honestly though, I'm into these because of the model and not the figures. Great comments and thanks for watching. I have one more build coming in the next month that you might enjoy.

  • @curlyfries2956
    @curlyfries2956 Před 2 lety +5

    COBI used to use stickers but they starting phasing out and stopped entirely. But a few of their older sets from just 1 or two years ago obviously used stickers. This is kinda disappointing as I got a sopwith camel set a few days ago. I was aware it had stickers and I despised them when I ordered it but thought I could still try my best and manage. I could not. I tried the best I could with the stickers but still messed up with the symbols on the top wing, especially on the right one where I accidentally ripped it upon taking it off the pad as COBI stickers are really thin. Also I just put on the side stripes only a few hours ago as a forgot to put them on the set when I built it, and one of the stripes is already starting to flake off! What a mess. Thankfully it still looks good from a distance and I won’t be seeing the top symbols much from the angle I’m sitting at whilst at my desk, and the stripes are small and the mistake is invisible from just a little bit away, but still a bit frustrating knowing it’s there. Also COBI is constantly remaking sets to improve them so if there is a set you really want but it has stickers, COBI might just make a new and improved version with no stickers, more accurate scale, and better detail

      @@retroCombs The only models from cobi that I have seen having stickers are:
      - civilian planes (concorde, Boeing)
      - Skoda Fabia model
      - P-51 Mustang model from Top Gun series.
      In general it seems, that COBI will use stickers as a last resort if the painted part has to be spread over multiple elements - for example for passenger planes its hard to paint all those windows and maintan perfect alignment, and for the Mustang the insignia on the tail would need to be spread over many small elements and would probably be hard to make a comprehensible instruction for that. When the print has to be spread over 2-3 elements, they will often come preassembled - it seems that to avoid alignment problems they pad print on pre-assembled pieces.
      I only had one case of misaligned print on parts for one Wartburg - the window pieces do not align correctly, but COBI had no way to preassemble those, as they do not join directly. With that said, on other Wartburg versions (there are 6 in total I believe) that I own this issue did not happen. I assume if I reported this to Cobi I could get parts with proper pad print sent to me, did not try though.
      I have around 15 cars, Concorde and 4 WWII fighter planes, so overall the one misprint is not that bad. And with the stickers, I skipped them and the models still look acceptable (since there is still a lot of pad printed elements, so lacking detail on 1 is not that serious). I noticed while comparing older models and newer ones (I tend to buy the discounted models as soon as they go out of production) that with each year the overall quality increases. I have noticed it when comparing Mitsubishi Zero models - the most recent ones look considerably better than the ones that were sold few years ago.

      @@retroCombs he's suggesting higher end Cobi models, WWII vehicles. The Karl Gerat is a massive superheavy mine launcher of the Nazis, cobi's model is about 100€. The Pzkfz VI is the nazi Tiger, Cobi's ones are well made. I would suggest this year's Maus set, which comes with interior. It's yet another nazi superheavy vehicle, a very impressive model.

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  Před rokem

      Mini Fig designs are a staple of the LEGO brand. They do have more accurate characters with their Friends line, but I don't ever see a time where the Mini Fig is replaced. That's part of their brand appeal.
