Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was an African American dancer/actor who is mostly identified with his dancing duos with a very young Shirley Temple in 1930s motion pictures. He was an incredible dancer who seemed to make every dance step seem effortless. Additionally, he was an early black headliner in Broadway shows. Despite being the highest-paid black performer of the time, Robinson died penniless in 1949, his funeral paid for by longtime friend Ed Sullivan. In 1989, Congress designated Robinson's birthday of May 25 as National Tap Dance Day.
At age two, Davis began his career in Vaudeville with his father Sammy Davis Sr. and the Will Mastin Trio, which toured nationally, and his film career began in 1933. After military service, Davis returned to the trio and became an overnight sensation following a nightclub performance at Ciro's (in West Hollywood) after the 1951 Academy Awards. With the trio, he became a recording artist. In 1954, at the age of 29, he lost his left eye in a car accident. Several years later, he converted to Judaism, finding commonalities between the oppression experienced both by black Americans and Jewish communities. In 1958, he faced a backlash for his involvement with a white woman at a time when interracial relationships were taboo in the U.S. and where interracial marriage was not legalized nationwide until 1967. He and May Britt married in 1960-1968.
What you should add, ( or maybe not know ) about the car crash is something I learnt watching a Frank Sinatra documentary.... Sinatra was ENRAGED when he found out later that night that Sammy's eye might have been saved had he not been turned away from 3 or 4 hospitals first because 'they did not accept colours' before eventually finding one that did.
My favorite version of this song is by the "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band", probably because I heard them do it first. Great song, no matter who sings it, and great reaction
Sammy was one of Frank Santara's Rat Pack. The Rat Pack would perform together in Las Vegas. He was a singer, dancer & actor. It was the members of the Rat Pack who were in the original Ocean 11 movie.
There's a twist about this song, since the real dancer Mr Bojangles died when songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker was still a boy. The fellow he met in a jail was just a New Orleans street dancer who borrowed the name.
I have always loved Sammy! Profoundly talented and very open hearted guy. Now this song motivates me to look into the life of the real Mr. Bojangles too! Thank you so much! ❤
The man the wonderful singer tap dancer whip cracker actor.and Master Entertainer... he had it all as well as being a pure beautiful Gentleman..Sammy the legend when Legend meant something in the industry..Ty for the lovely reaction to his signature song as he said it is special to him personally. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵
Why was it special to Sammy? As others have said it wasn't written by him, Sammy was many things, actor, comedian, impressionist, singer and dancer (his first love) but he didn't write his own songs, he just made them his own. The song wasn't about Bill Robinson, the original Bojangles who died in 1949, but about an indigent dancer using his nickname. But Perhaos it was special because Sammy regarded Robinson as his teacher and inspiration. Sammy was confident here in 1985, because he had been on stage since he was 2, he made his film debut in 1933. He was the great entertainer.
I Saw Nitty-gritty Dirt Band perform this song in a concert, 🎭 Sammy Davis Jr. / Mr. Show Business, I was lucky to see him receive a lifetime achievement Award, San Diego Convention Center, American Dance Honors 1990, Liza Minnelli presented it to him. It was his last public appearance 😢. Sammy one of our great American performers. Peace✌️ and Love❤️ Gary your 70 year old forever hippie 😊 the Nicholas Brothers were there also❤ you reacted to them with Cab Callaway. Great reaction 🤣
He was in movies dancing at age 3. He performed for years with the Rat Pack including Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in Las Vegas for years. He had a wonderful voice. He opened the doors for every black entertainer and suffered insulting behavior. Even in the famous clubs he performed in, he was not allowed to sleep in their hotels until Sinatra threatened to pull their act out. Great humanitarian.
Sammy Davis Jr. was an American singer, dancer, actor, comedian, film producer & television director. He was also part of the famous "Rat Pack", led by his friend Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop & Peter Lawford. He appeared in many movies, television & performed in Las Vegas. Sammy had some great songs such as "Hey There", "Something’s Gotta Give", "That’s Entertainment", "Me & My Shadow", "I've Gotta Be Me", "The Candy Man", "Birth Of The Blues" etc.
I rolled my eyes when I saw Sammy Davis Jr doing "Mr BoJangles". I watched it because I like you both, I am pleasantly surprised that a cabaret version of a solid country folk tune (covered by numerous country & country rock musicians) written by the great Jerry Jeff Walker held up to the simple but stirring story. Kudos to the late great Sammy Davis Jr, getting a great musician & great song together doesn't always produce a great experience. In this case it does. Thank you both for checking out many different genres, good music is good music regardless the style.
Sammy Davis was an extraordinary artist. This song is very deep and has within those lyrics a deep underlying message. In this journey of life there will be times for change, times when opportunities come calling, and times when you travel with someone and times when you travel alone. It’s important to recognise this, be true to yourself and not be swayed too much by the bright lights, and con artists who are only focused on their own interests. You could end up in a cell. No matter how high you jump, you still need to touchdown; but if you can touchdown softly, it will be easier to continue on your journey. Live to your purpose. The rest is just noise. Bojangles (Bill Robinson)was famous and successful and died broke.
Oh, dear dear dear Sammy ❤❤ I had a glowing heart when I saw that you were going to react to this! His voice is soooo powerful. One of the greatest entertainers of all time! Great reaction!👍👏🎉❤️
I just love Sammy Davis Jr. He is my favorite entertainer. From watching interviews, variety shows, concerts, and so on, he seemed like the sweetest man. He had such an eloquent, class way of being a celebrity. I know dean martin is the coolest cat but I think Sammy takes the number one place, sorry dean still like you. Life is a little bit more dull without this man in it ❤
Every summer my mom and grandmother would take us to Lake Tahoe for vacation. It was always during the time Sammy was performing there. Our vacation always included going to his show
Black man Bill Robinson (1877-1949) was an American dancer and actor known as Bojangles. He was the highest paid Black performer in the first half of the twentieth century. He appeared in over a dozen movies and you can catch him dancing with famous child actress Shirley Temple in the movie "The Little Colonel: (1935) and contributing in the movie with the very famous at the time actor/showman Will Rogers in the movie "In Old Kentucky" (1935). Movies to watch on a Saturday night, catching up on American culture of the past.
I recused a cute fluffy white disabled puppy around 2012. His early life was hell & he suffered severe neglect & abuse. I fell in love with him immediately & took him home. I named him Mr Bo Jangles, because my Daddy loves this song & would sing it all the time. I would sing this song to my sweet Bo Jangles. My doggie passed 2 years ago & this is the 1st time I have been able to hear this song since. Thank you, guys, for such a sweet reaction. Greetings from Pennsylvania
Yeah, guys, classic rat pack member, one of my favs. Andre, you got it right, it is about the Virginian dancer/actor Bill Robinson, traveling the South making a living. Sammy was always a jazzy type guy. Quite a talent & true icon. "Natural" was the right word for him, Andre. Bravo, guys! 👍😊
Mr. Davis does a fantastic job bringing the song to stage. Perhaps feeling like Mr. Bojangles himself. But credit to writer Jerry Jeff Walker, a country rocker, part of Outlaw Country with Willie Nelson.🤠 ☮❤🎶
Everyone does this version, but 1971 or 72 in Germany for UNICEF, where the fans were all around the stage at knee level, was by far his best live rendition. P.S. the writer of this song was in jail in New Orleans, met a black man who could dance, but when he asked him his name he said Bojangles, because the original Bojangles was a great dancer of movie fame, so this man's names is never told....
Sammy grew up in show business. He was in a Vaudville act with his father, Sammy Davis Sr, at the age of two, in 1927. He was a remarkable dancer. He was a member of the Rat Pack in Las Vegas with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. His doctor told him, around 1968, to stop dancing. His body could not take it anymore. Still whenever he performed this song, he would sneak in a few dance moves. For the performance you watched he was 60 years old. He died five years later at the age of 65. My parents had a Sammy Davis Jr. record and I loved it, I was about 10 years old. The first autobiography I ever read was 'Yes, I Can' by Sammy Davis Jr. I am now older than Sammy was whn he died, but I am still a fan and always will be.
Hello Andre and Dominica . . . . you just saw a master class in singing and performing . . . . we are all so fortunate that this was recorded for posterity . . . . . take care . . . . . Danny in Mississippi
Full concert: Sammy Davis jr. live Germany. Stars the opening night of a brandnew Casino. Great Audio Quality and not many man can wear heavy juwelery like him and Elvis.
I dearly love watching CZcams react the expression on your faces say it all! Sammy Davis Jr RIP, he also did a song called Candyman I believe that one was the early seventies, Bob Dylan also did a virgin of Mr Bojangles,

The rat pack was Frank, Dean , peter lawford, and aew others . They all arranged to play vegas at the same tome.. so they could film the original version of Oceans elevan..... Joey bishop was another of the rat pack.....
I met the Jerry Jeff Walker (RIP), the creator of the song "Mr. Bojangles" at a cheap motel in Colorado when I was selling t-shirts for Emmy Lou Harris's tour.
Many venues told The Rat Pack they could only play there, if they left the black guy at home. The Rat Pack of course, told those places to go “F” themselves, and found someplace else to sing. It is possible we might never have heard of Sammy Davis today, if not for the strength of that friendship.
That song was written by a country music singer " Jerry Jeff Walker" Walker actually wrote this after spending a night in a jail cell with Mr. Bojangles.
One of the greatest entertainers of the 20th Century, on par with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Judy Garland, a Master of his craft.
Please check out Jerry Jeff Walker’s version, like maybe his live performance at Austin City Limits. The music and singing are pretty basic but the story shines. JJW is the songwriter and he has the type of voice and delivery that sounds like he and Mr Bojangles actually could have been coincidental overnight guests at the local jail. Some other songs by JJW - Railroad Lady, Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother (a total bar singalong ), Derby Day (a surprising love song), to name a few.
Sammy was the best and you two just caught a little part of it and believe it or not he could dance even better... If you look up All around Entertainer You d see a picture of Sammy ✌️😉 Now tell me honestly do we get even half of effort and dedication in todays entertainers ? ( Doubt it ) Check out... Sammy Davis, Jr. was an _extraordinary_ performer. I have adored him since I was about 10 years old and I am now 70 years old. He is older in this video. I love this song. But... I feel this version is his best. Sammy was performing with the Boston Pops Orchestra back in the late 80's. Mr. Bojangles starts @ the 20min mark. czcams.com/video/6OIqs2H2RuA/video.html
Bojangles Robinson was a great dancer who appeared in films, such as the series with Shirley Temple, back in the 1930s. czcams.com/video/3X4A9mI5bxw/video.html . Davis himself was a great dancer.
An ok performance if you like jazzed-up vocal exercises instead of meaningful music, but for REAL musical enjoyment, listen to the "Nitty gritty dirt band" version.
TWO COVERS BOB DYLAN NINA SIMONE OTHER HITS FROM SAMMY DAVIS JUNIOR MENTION A MANSION HELLO DOLLY HELLO DETROIT IN THE GHETTO OLD MAN RIVER AND MANY MORE
Do you really want to know why this song was so special to him? It's because he hated it. The story reminded him of himself too much and his own personal fear of his career ending like a, Mr. Bojangles. Now go rewatch it again knowing this detail and tell me it doesn't give you pause.
I'm not guessing when I say that you will like Lawrence. Any "acoustic-ish" of theirs. If you don't know them already. Maybe you know them and that's why you don't react to them.
Oh. And if you really don't know them: Thank me later. (I know, very cocky, but I'm *that* confident that you'll be blown away like I would propose listening to The Dire Straits or Ren or Clapton)

Thank you for sharing this.
Very touching.
And dont forget to mention, Sammy had danced with Bojangles as a young man. The story was indeed true, he knew mr bojangles in real life too.
Sammy was a very good dancer, he was a tap dancer since he was just a child. Actor, and a Broadway actor as well. He had his own variety show on tv.
Mr Davis was one of the greatest entertainers of all-time!!!
Now, you need to listen to the “Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “ version.
Sammy was the Michael Jackson of his era--as a singer, dancer and actor. He was the greatest entertainer who ever lived.
he's also an amazing tap dancer, actor, drummer..
Absolutely love it!❤ Sammy could do everything! Act. Sing. Dance. So talented!!❤❤
Sammy was such a gift to the world!
Top 10 of all time with a pairing of singer and song. No one else could ever do this song like Sammy.

He had a big hit with The Candy Man. A fun song. He also sang all the ballads that the other crooners sang too.
Old school entertainer. Beautiful.

What's not to love about Sammy!!!!
Seeing this video, brings such memories of seeing him in films and on the TV. Thanks for your heartfelt reaction
Everyone does this version, but 1971 or 72 in Germany for UNICEF, where the fans were all around the stage at knee level, was by far his best live rendition. I would recommend doing the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of this song!
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did a great version as well
Now you got to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band singing Mr Bojangles

While I enjoy Sammy's version, the version by the Nitty Gritty dirt band was just over the top great.
Artists could do it all back then....
Song-n-dance men ah who could also act and even do comedy...
(E - O - 11● E - O - 11.. 😉)
Sammy could do it all
Check out Oceans Eleven

Frank Sinatra Dean Martin Sammy Davis Jr. Peter Lawford Joey Bishop
Jerry Jeff Walker, only version worth hearing, who wrote the song..

You should do the better version of this song by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Listen to original song….Jerry Geof Walker…
:)
Do you really want to know why this song was so special to him? It's because he hated it. The story reminded him of himself too much and his own personal fear of his career ending like a, Mr. Bojangles. Now go rewatch it again knowing this detail and tell me it doesn't give you pause.
Oh wow, thank you 💚
I'm not guessing when I say that you will like Lawrence.
Thank you. We need to check them out 👍
