  • News that an elderly man in Alaska has died from Alaskapox - the first known fatality, according to state health officials - has brought newfound attention to the recently discovered virus.
The man, who lived in the remote Kenai Peninsula and had a suppressed immune system due to cancer treatments, was hospitalized in November and died in late January, according to a bulletin released Friday by Alaska public health officials.
Alaskapox, also known as AKPV, is part of a group of viruses called orthopoxviruses, which infect mammals and cause skin lesions, according to the Alaska Department of Health.
First discovered in 2015, Alaskapox is related to smallpox, cowpox and mpox, officials said.
Though it's unclear how the man contracted the virus, officials said it's possible that it could be linked to a stray cat that lived with him.
The news comes as health officials in Oregon recently confirmed a rare case of human plague in a resident who was likely infected by their pet cat.
    Alaskapox symptoms
The Alaska Department of Health said symptoms of Alaskapox can include:
    One or more skin lesions
    Rash
    Swollen lymph nodes
    Joint or muscle pain

Seven, with the only fatality being immunocompromised, isn't really representative of the general population. People should be aware of it because it obviously can be fatal under niche circumstances, though taking a mortality rate with the given sample isn't really useful information.

Got pets maintain their tick and flea treatments updated.
Treat your outdoor areas for pests.
Chicken coops etc need smaller tighter wire, average chicken wire is big enough for mice, voles, etc to get inside.
I just watched an experiment where a man demonstrated how big a hole needs to be for mice to breech your home, RV etc.
I blame tik tok for all the videos of people raising wildlife.

I wonder if it was something frozen in the permafrost that has gotten free due to warming melt. Something I've been expecting for some time. Hope there is more information soon

@ladyE602 Studies show that diseases such as E. coli and salmonella can survive in freezing temperatures and are perfectly willing to hitch a ride on an ice cube to infect a host that's why there are OSHA rules for restaurant ice makers as well ...so your statement is wrong

Viruses have been found in the perma frost and deeply embedded in ice. Some have been brought back to "life" and it is absolutely possible something old is returning with global warming.

Do they still have small pox innoculant around to restart the program of vaccines? I still have a scar from my original "shot".

They restarted making smallpox vaccine after the 9/11 scare that Iraq may have weaponized smallpox, and recently gave out thousands of vaccinations during the monkeypox (mpox) epidemic in 2022 because of its overlapping protection.

There's nothing ever to worry about. You rarely control external variables but you 100% control your perception & response to the outer world. Why worry? No reason to live in a world where you're making up alternative realities.

I doubt it. This is just a newly (re) discovered strain of a very very ancient virus. I'm betting it was released via the melting permafrost Alaska is now experiencing. The roads in Alaska are buckling from the ground softening.
Btw I at 62 still have the scar from my sm.pox s. hot as a child. Too bad the resistance doesn't last that long!🤷‍♀️
