Galway Reacts to Bishop Eamonn Casey Revelations, Ireland 1992

- čas přidán 2. 01. 2022
- Mood changes in Galway among the public as more about Bishop Eamonn Casey’s relationship with Annie Murphy and their son Peter becomes known.
As the latest revelations came to light, there was unquestioning support among Galway churchgoers for Bishop Casey and considerable hostility to the woman at the centre of the controversy.
"This seems to be a very good man and she’s destroyed this man, it’s disgraceful."
However once people listened to successive RTÉ radio interviews with Annie Murphy and her teenage son Peter, public opinion softened. One woman interviewed does not think the bishop treated Annie and Peter fairly
"I felt very sad really for the son in what he said, that he felt that he would really, that he’d like to have, got to know his father more."
Nuns and priests who previous worked with the Bishop said they would welcome him back and have no difficulty with him returning as Bishop of Galway.
Dr Maureen Murphy from the Slanu Cancer Help Centre believes the Bishop had a relationship, rather than making a mistake. The tragedy as she see it is that church law did not allow the Bishop to have the freedom to be different around that relationship.
"As far as I’m concerned, he didn’t do any wrong, I wouldn’t see anything wrong with loving a woman, as he did."
Parish Priest of Barna Fr Leo Morahan believes the Bishop should be forgiven and welcomed back to the diocese.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 8 May 1992. The reporter is Jim Fahy.
The priests and the nuns are all ready to forgive a Bishop, but put countless women through indescribable suffering for decades and centuries for their "unclean" actions. Ireland is a better place now the church is on the margins of society.
Those women in question were not living independently and were expecting help and it was the very reason many of them went to the homes in the first place.
It is just a reality of the world that nobody wants to face up to especially those that want a society made up of single mothers.
@@bighands69 what!
A double standard for sure and the clown touting forgiveness was so predictable all these snake oil sams selling the same thing everyone wants which is an afterlife .I am glad to see the pedophilia exposed and that bunch of bad actors taken down a peg or two.
I mean what do you expect? In group out group dynamics are already biological bed rock instincts that are so prevalent that lab experiments assigned participants into groups of people they've never met before with randomized names they've never heard of before, and they all had in group preference to their new founded word group and prejudice toward the other, and they had their brains scanned to illustrate the parts of the brain activity when experiencing in group bias and out group prejudice. Now, attach this principle to a several thousand year old sacred religion with a hierarchy of people that you work with, are associated with and trust, well goodluck trying to turn on them when they endure confrontation with others, because the likelihood is unless you're more afraid of public ostracization and societal/legal punishment, you're likely going to be prejudicial toward anyone who's going to threaten your group.
