  • A quick look at my collection of basses, as it was in January of 2017. Lots of Fender basses, a weird fretless, my old Foderas of course, and a few rare vintage finds such as my Goya Panther ii, and my 1972 Fender Musicmaster.

    Tapewounds are pretty cool but they have 2 downsides:
    1. They’re pretty flappy, and I mean really flappy. If you’re gonna play hard, you should take that into consideration, because they get hard to hold onto.
    2. The entire string is coated in plastic and that’s gonna hum like crazy in certain situations, especially in the studio.
    I put la Bella tapes on my P. They sound pretty cool and unique, but I got tired of them pretty soon. Am currently planning on switching to fender flats.

    LOVED this one Janek. I am huge fan of short scale basses (I own one of the new PJ Mustangs and a SS Jag). They give a nice warm, round sound and sit nicely in most mixes. I also love tapewound strings. I think most of my basses are strung with them. Thanks for sharing this!

    Janek, first and foremost, you have inspired me greatly to start playing bass again. I switched from bass to piano years ago but I recently picked up the bass thanks to you. I really like the bass with the high C which you have displayed. Do you think a high C can be effective in any 5 string bass?

    You can build short scale P-bass or J-bass from Warmoth parts. USA-made, great quality, any electronics you want. If you do the build yourself, you can easily keep it under a grand.

    ...Hey Guess what...I have the same Fender Musicmaster bass/serial#6_ _ 425 ....1974/75...Fender grabbed what was available in inventory that would fit in their production design of these basses. ie the pick-up not actually for bass but what they had in surplus from Stratocaster guitar (middle pick-up was my info). My bass is clean, sounds great use it every morning to do my sight reading.

  • @urmero67
    @urmero67 Před 7 lety

    You sound pretty good on fretless Janek I encourage you to keep at it and don't be worrying about intonation too much. The way I look at my fretless is that I use it as a bass to break all the rules of harmony and intonation and just get creative and to make the mistakes sound like music. and for that, guys like Percy Jones and mick Karn have been very influential..in fact you should get a bass with no fret lines or markers at all and just go by your ear...get creative with the limitations.

    In regards to your 1st Fodera (specifically the strings) I’ve tried half wounds and I really can’t dig em... I either need the brightness of rounds or the warmness of flats. That in between strikes my ear as odd for my particular basses.

    question: when did you decide investing the money in a custom bass was worth it, and what were the motivating factors for you? i realize professional/financial circumstances and personal taste vary between players, but I'm personally having a bit of a crisis over whether to pull the trigger on a new custom instrument (i know, nice problem to have), with a big incentive being a more comfortable scale length. enjoying the vlogs a great deal, keep up the good work

    About the musicmaster
    Doesn't it lack low end? I borrowed one from a friend to try out in a power trio rehearsal and it barely cut through the drums and the guitar
    How did it do in a bigger group situation? I can't understand how people use these basses so much. What is your take on it?

  • @DiogoBaeder
    @DiogoBaeder Před 7 lety

    Ouch, man, DAT TONE you got in "Rise And Fall" (from Bob Reynolds' "Somewhere In Between"), specially kicking in at 3:42... that's the PERFECT bass tone for me! I know, I know, there are right tones for right situations, but man, what tone is that... gosh...
    Got a Precision-like luthier bass here which was made in a really vintage vibe (I asked the luthier to make it with reused wood and no knobs at all, just pickup+jack and that's it), I'll try to get close to that tone, wish me luck! :-)
