  • I’ve been waiting for this bass for over 4 1/2 years. It was the bass gifted to me and Chelsea at our wedding in 2019, and holds a very special place in our hearts.
    It also happens to be a world-class piece of design and craftsmanship, which takes owning and playing it to a whole other level.
    All is explained in the episode.

    Love long-form content. I'm probably one of the weird people who more often listen to youtube (while running, driving, doing DIY) than watch youtube with the sound off. New six-string sounds great. I've tried a few times with a six and it never worked for me, but I know it's all about time with the instrument. Love what you do.

    That bass looks and sounds great!!! I'm glad that you and Mattisson worked things out! Just think how good you'll be when you know where you are on the instrument!!! LOL!!! You're killing it and will be stunning in no time!!! I'm digging everything you're doing!!! I've always liked EMGs because they impart a lot of punch and definition and the neck pickup on your bass has a lot of clarity and punch!!! What an INCREDIBLE GIFT!!!

    Cool to see a longtime player try something new. I started playing in 1994. Have owned 4,5,6, and 7 string basses over the years. Few years ago I bought a 5 string multi scale Dingwall and it’s the instrument for me. I’m like the oldest guy I know (aside from Lee Sklar) primarily playing Dingwall basses (I have a couple fender basses also) but with the 5 string multi scale I can play high up the neck with clarity as if I was playing a bass with a high C. But the bass is tuned BEADG so I never have the high C getting in my way when slapping. For example. I have big chunky hands and my fingers often get hung up on the high c when I’m trying to pop the g string. I’ve practiced and practiced to get used to that but I think aside from going with a bass with a wider string spacing my fingers are just too big.

  • @iksajotien
    @iksajotien Před 6 měsíci

    It sounds very modern and very bright but you are adding your signature warmth to it. I think you can hear that the action is pretty low and the space between pickups and strings is also small, but man, this is a beautiful instrument.
    Another reflection: change in case of gear is a constant thing, you evolve as a musician and so does the gear, the another thing is that a change is always a kind of a simulation for your brain.
    And last thing: what Chelsea does think about this bass? Please ask her to join you on some podcast!

    Love the new bass. I got a 5 string just over a year ago (with a low B) after being exclusively 4. Took a lot of getting used to with the neck width, the A&D string probably got the most confusing on where I was at, I’d find myself a 4th out so many times. Probably got comfortable with it after about 3 months. Just gigged with it exclusively to get used to it.

    I dont think you have to worry about losing your facility on the 5s. You play 4s constantly and that doesnt affect you on your main bass. Once you get comfortable you'll be able to jump between them like you always. You are just not comfortable with the 6 yet.

    I'm only recently considering 6 string bass (for worship music at church) primarily so I can match the synth player in the lower register, and when we don't have an electric guitarist, it would be nice to have that upper register a six string offers too, so under these conditions, a six string bass is totally justified. Otherwise, I am, and always will be (at heart) a four string bassist! 😎

    Sorry Janek, as you have been probably asked this question a million times before, but why did you decide on a 32” scale on your basses? I’m just curios as I would imagine that would be great for people like me with shorter arms so I don’t have to extend so much when playing in the 1st position😂. Is there any other advantage and does it affect the sound of the instrument?

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Wish I could... but I know basically nothing about the inner workings of the instrument. Anders actually worked on the setup for me today in-person, and it feels way nicer right away. I also have a setup cat that I started taking my bass to recently in LA, so when I need an adjustment I'll let a professional take care of it.
      The kinds of things I ask for are a pretty high action without getting the string tension too tight.

    You can still add more fretboard/frets if you need. That's not a particularly outrageous act of luthiery.
    Also, really straightforward to get someone to do that finish work: add a string tree, fix the pick guard - these are simple jobs.

  • @joninawhitecoat
    @joninawhitecoat Před 6 měsíci

    Even on a brand new instrument with different pickups you still sound just like you. And that's as high a compliment as I could ever pay.
    Regarding needing the higher notes; you could tune it EADGCF so you get the high notes, and that could also open a whole new world of voicings over 6 strings.
    With the slanted pickups, the idea is to give a tighter tone on the low strings, and a warmer tone on the higher strings, almost like the opposite of a Strat bridge pickup, or the opposite of a P-bass pickup.
    Is the bass active, btw? EMG are famous for making active pickups where they have a battery powered preamp built into the pickup itself, so you can have a pickup with fewer windings so it's brighter, cleaner, and clearer, but the preamp boosts the output so it's equivalent to a pickup with more windings. Not all EMGs are active as they do make passive pickups too, I believe the passive ones have EMG-HZ on them.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 6 měsíci +1

      This is active yes. I met with Anders today and we talked about other pickup options, but I'm sticking with the EMGs for now.

    Janek…. You talk a lot, you change your gear a lot, and it’s quite interesting to hear your perspective . A bit of an anarchist in the terms of manufacturers of equipment etc, but most importantly, a great bassist with your own sound and take on things. The latter is the most important. 😉👍

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 6 měsíci +1

      It's a very small market, and the truth of the matter is that it makes almost no difference at all with the bass. 4, 5, 6 or more, it's all 4ths. If something is too muddy in one octave, you move it up the octave. All the voicings are the same, it's the same 12 notes we're dealing with in western music, so to make a book that was exclusively for 2% of the bass world would be a massive undertaking for very little payoff. Literally every exercise and concept in all of my books so far, can be played on any bass. I'm using the 4-string in a lot of the recent lesson videos to try and prove that point, and make sure everyone feels they have access to the material.

    Remember a 6-string bass is its own thing, approach it and play it that way, it is not a 5-string bass with an extra string. It’s much the way you look at a 5-string now, it is not a 4-string with an extra string. A subtle difference, but it changes the way you play the instrument as a whole

    How would you say your process was to find your identity as a musician and bass player?

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 6 měsíci +1

      by spending as much time with the instrument as possible, playing music that inspired me, and concentrating on time and sound over everything else in my process.

      I tried that! I couldn’t get that F to sing on my fretless, but it was awesome to have those high notes.

    Constantly adjusting the mic (studio boom arm) while you are talking is distracting.

    Main camera on the slider is not a good idea, makes the viewer dizzy.

      If this makes you dizzy, I would definitely seek medical advice for your long-term physical stability and longevity as a human 😂
      Being that it’s set to 1% motion, the slowest setting possible, it’s designed to add some variation to the shot without having to have a three person camera crew and live producer on site for every episode.

    The six string sounds better than the five in my opinion, much fatter and more musical to me

    It looks cheap to me.. Really any bass that's below 15k in price is for amateurs... I recently bought a Bentley Continental 7 string bass and it's awesome!
