    If you're a bassist skilled with scales and arps on guitar as well, I recommend getting a 7-string bass and tuning it the same as a 7-string guitar: BEADGBE. That's the same as the one in this video with the highest two strings dropped a half step. Then all your chords work! Perfect place to use your higher-voiced drop-2 chords.

    • @HappyTreeFreak666

      I would realy like a vid like that would be very interesting. I could tell you how I feel about the Squier Bass VI and the SRC6 (dont own them, just played em in the store):
      They do not sound that well played through a bass amp, since the shorter scale and the thinner strings thinn out the low end a lot, played like a guitar through a guitar amp and overdriven sounds like hell breaks loose. Especially the SRC6 would probably kill in a Metal Band, and used correctly could replace a bassist. Classic Basslines don't sound that great, but you get the register and the frequencies needed, playing powerchords on these sounds heavy as fuck.
      Sorry if there are any typos, english is not my first language

    I actually owned the 7 string (BTB747) for a short period of time. Beautiful tone but the combination of 7 strings plus it being a 35" inch scale bass made it killer on the hands when playing anything in the low register for a long period of time.

  • @rydermendelson7506

    I imagine it is done all fourths because a bass will be played differently than a guitar. The change to a high b string helps with bar chords, but you will not be strumming chords on a bass. This is definitely geared towards the jazz bassist, who will be soloing. This allows a seamless transition while playing a difficult lick. It goes all fourths because the third between the e and b would just be useless.

    That's the third iteration of Ibanez BTB's seven sting bass, actually. I've got both a BTB-7E and a BTB-7F (fretless, J-market only) second gen models. The first were glossy with gold hardware (puke), the second were natural finishes w/ black chrome hardware. The BTB747 there have the current BTB features, revised body cut, stainless steel frets, zero fret, and body end truss rod.
    Also, you don't have to keep that dreadful high string on there. Shift everything and go low!!! 8-D

    Are 7 string basses recommended? There is one Ibanez BTB 747 for sale where I live in, and they are pretty rare, hard to find. Yet I'm not sure if it is worth the investment (almost 1,050 $us). I'm a bassist with guitar skills as well, I can play both no problem. I mostly play rock/metal but I can also play other genres.

    • @deviationblue
      @deviationblue Před rokem

      You can find them used on reverb for $550 bc no, they’re not really worth it for most people. The extra string is conventionally a high F, not anything lower than the B…They buy one and realize it’s a lot of high end and most bassists just won’t use it - and simply take the L.
      But for the few that do, this is absolutely ace.

    Cool video, great playing.It's a bit misleading to outright claim that a bass with more than 5 strings isn't for people with small hands. With proper technique, most players would be able handle a 6 or 7 string. An Ibanez SR506 was my first extended range bass 10+ years ago; now my co-main bass is a Dingwall ABZ6, and I'm 5'6'', with average (not large, but not 'presidential' small) hands.

    Was thinking one of them might be an extra long scale bass to tune an octave down below 8 string guitars. :(

    • @royalcat10
      @royalcat10 Před 5 lety

      Unfortunately, an octave lower than 8 string guitars is right on the cusp of being inaudible to humans. That's an F#0, which is about 23hz, the lowest we can hear is an E0, at roughly 20hz, or one octave below a standard bass. While it'd be interesting, we wouldn't be able to hear it as much as we'd feel it, which I guess has it's uses but very niche.

    • @Just-Michael
      @Just-Michael Před 5 lety

      royalcat10 - yeah I had the Dingwall basses in mind. However, playing at the same octave makes the mix too thin. What I do is play a 4 string tuned the same as the lowest 4 strings and then generate a sub octave and mix them together. So you have the clarity of the higher octave with the feeling of the lower octave. There are some bands that do have the bass tuned that low though. Even then, I have the 8 string tuned to DGDGCFAD for my own music.

    • @Ronofthedead07
      @Ronofthedead07 Před 2 lety

      I think there exist basses with a low F# string but they are rare and super expensive. More people just use a 5 or 6 string bass with heavy gauge strings , down tune them to whatever they need, and adjust the truss rod for the increased tension. Extra long scale basses (35+”) really lend themselves well to very low tunings.

    I don't feel bass players go crazy to buy Ibanez basses. They look kind of too tiny like a toy compared at other bass brands like EBMM Bongo or fender Jazz bass. As a big guy the shape is not the right fit... I do like the jack lock female receptor option in the BTB premium model, I think I am buying the Ibanez SRMS806 6 String Bass Brown Topaz Burst...

      You will need to get used to the “floating thumb” technique.

    • @Gothic_Analogue
      @Gothic_Analogue Před 5 lety

      I mute my strings with my thumb and pinky finger on my 5 string. I can’t use my palm because it feels strange but it produces the same muted effect. I would presume you could transfer that technique to these 6 and 7 stringed basses.

      With proper technique developed through practice. Practicing with headphones helps really isolate parts of your technique you need to work on.

    can you play a six string base just like a normal guitar, question from a guitar player

    • @milesparker557
      @milesparker557 Před 5 lety +2

      If it's tuned EADGBe, then you can kinda play it like a guitar. But the neck's gonna be wider and strings are farther away

    • @QuarrelsomeLocalOaf
      @QuarrelsomeLocalOaf Před 5 lety +5

      "Standard" long scale six string bass tuning is BEADGC, you'd probably be more interested in a Fender Bass VI that's pretty much a regular standard tuned guitar stretched out to 30" and tuned an octave down with heavier strings.

    • @hairychris444
      @hairychris444 Před 5 lety +3

      TBH You can tune a bass exactly how you want. I played bass tuned CGCFA in an old band, following the guitars.
      But, for the OP, bass plays and sounds a hell of a lot different to guitar. Once guitars go much over 27 inch scale they also start to sound weird esp. the unwound strings (the whole harp/piano thing Lee mentions here) as the overtones the strings generate change. Works with bass better than guitar IMO.

      @Grumdot Před 5 lety +1

      MR_BEETROOT I suppose you could. But the thing is, as 6-string bass player, I'm not trying to step on the guitar player's toes. I'm still staying in my lane as a bass player. The extra strings just add flexibility, especially in smaller groups. It really is more of an instrument for jazz fusion, or gospel. Hope that answers your question.

    • @royalcat10
      @royalcat10 Před 5 lety

      Just custom build your set, really. The bottom 5 strings are the exact same you'd find for a 5 string bass, which are plenty common. And then the upper two strings, the C and F are easy enough to find, as they really are just regular guitar gauges. It's not too difficult to get a 7 string set put together.

    • @m00plank90

      Matt Chapman Obviously you will have to go online, ( I have to go online to find good strings for my 6-string bass) but they are out there in a set. (It isn't necessary to go into Frankenstein mode).

    My biggest issue with some of those SR basses is the thinness of the finish. I've seen so many on the used market or even as floor models with finish worn through to the wood. Some of this year's models have the thicker finish but I would never buy the SR500 or the old fanfret model for that reason.
