I used to like Master of Darkness more than Castlevania because the atmosphere was more reminiscent of what you would see in a vampire movie than the generic fantasy setting of Castlevania. You had Victorian London at the start instead of starting out in some random castle that could be located in any D&D game.
Completely understandable! I do admit that perhaps my issue is that I generally don't find turn of the century england a particularly interesting topic.
One of my only two gripes with Friday the 13th is how long it takes to kill Jason during the final battle on each day. A tense atmosphere can only carry for so long when you see how slow Jason’s health bar is depleting. The other is the children. You can make it on time, but saving all five in a spot is a tight time window. It makes keeping them alive a little annoying. Other than those problems, the game is perfectly acceptable. Hint: There is a dodge button for the first-person fights. I believe it’s down.
As a kid, Friday the 13th for the NES seemed cryptic - therefore confusing, therefore hard, therefore bad - so I totally get the angle in the AVGN video. In my adult years though, I've come to see the game for the masterpiece it really is; it's incredibly unique for the time, has a genuinely eerie atmosphere, and when you know what you're doing it's rather fun to play (screw that alarm though :D)
I had a different opinion. It was pretty easy for my friend and I but he also had the manual so that could have helped. I don't get the hate for the game at all. It is definitely eerie.
An early 90s horror game I'd recommend is Microprose "The Legacy." Although not 8-bit and a DOS game, it's actually one of the better horror games of that time. I'd say it even rivals Infogrames original 3D "Alone on the Dark." The game locks you alone in a large haunted mansion that you inherent from your uncle. The goal is to solves the mystery of your ancestors past, eliminate the evil unleased by your relatives, and escape the mansion. Legacy is very narrative/puzzle driven and has a strong Lovecraftian theme to it. Monsters you encounter are quite powerful and difficult to kill. Consequently you learn early on to simply avoid them (So in some ways it plays as an early stealth game, a bit like "Theif.") It also has a simple role playing element to it, where you choose one of half dozen pre-made characters, each with different skill sets. As you progress through the game, you earn points to upgrade stats. On the downside, combat is clunky and basic. The monsters attack in real time, and you kill them by simply pointing your cursor onto the creature and clicking until it dies. The Legacy has a primitive 3D first person format common for the 80s and 90s (like Wizardry & D&Ds Eye of the Beholder). The UI was quite novel for its time, having a multi-windowed format in which each resizable screen simultaneously displayed various aspects of the game, such as 1st person view, overhead map, inventory, character, and spell book. For its day, the graphics were quite good. The sound track was excellent as well, with each floor possessing different creepy background music. The game can still be downloaded from various sites, most of these are played in DOS-box. Piko Interactive has apparently made an updated version that's compatible with Windows 10 and MacOS on GOG.
I Remember Renting Frankenstein for the NES, and *LOVING IT* i was playing it at my Grandmothers house, cause my mom had to work at the time.. i never liked my Grandmother because she was an Abusive Jerk who hid behind being a Christian for everything she did... she saw me fighting "Demon Horse" and had a Meltdown cause i quote "Brought a Demon into her home" the sort of shit kids have to put up with. i swear.
1:23 do you realize that both Monster and Doctor treat each other as father and son? Especially the monster. This gives him the right of having the same last name as his father
Pacnsacdave did three rom hacks of Friday the 13th that let you play as Freddy against Jason, Jason against Freddy or Laurie Strode vs Michael Myers respectively, with weapon upgrades, fireplace lighting progress and health items being shared across all playable characters.

Thank you for the hint. I kept getting my ass kicked haha
I had Alien 3 on the Genesis when I was a kid. I never got very far and it creeped me out.
It's such a good game!
THANK YOU, I LOVE the NES version of Friday the 13th, despite it's flaws, and I love the ANN episode!...It's honestly such a fun game...
As a kid, Friday the 13th for the NES seemed cryptic - therefore confusing, therefore hard, therefore bad - so I totally get the angle in the AVGN video. In my adult years though, I've come to see the game for the masterpiece it really is; it's incredibly unique for the time, has a genuinely eerie atmosphere, and when you know what you're doing it's rather fun to play (screw that alarm though :D)
haha yeah that alarm was super annoying. If I played Friday the 13th as a kid I probably would have hated it too, so I get you mean xD
I had a different opinion. It was pretty easy for my friend and I but he also had the manual so that could have helped. I don't get the hate for the game at all. It is definitely eerie.
Definitely wanna check all of these out now!
Hope you'll enjoy them :D
An early 90s horror game I'd recommend is Microprose "The Legacy." Although not 8-bit and a DOS game, it's actually one of the better horror games of that time. I'd say it even rivals Infogrames original 3D "Alone on the Dark."
The game locks you alone in a large haunted mansion that you inherent from your uncle.
Consequently you learn early on to simply avoid them (So in some ways it plays as an early stealth game, a bit like "Theif.")
It also has a simple role playing element to it, where you choose one of half dozen pre-made characters, each with different skill sets.
Yeah, next year I'd like to do a 16-bit horror video and I'd like to include Ms-Dos games
The player sprite in Hell Fighter is the main character from Prince of Persia.
It's not an exact match, but it's very similar yeah
I think it's from International Karate, or IK+.
"Hey! You missed pal!"
( I honestly did not know that Dark Seed had a 8-bit port.. Really strange that it even exists lol. )
Yeah it's crazy that it exists
"Malkovich's gaming guilty pleasures"
Yes, I have an accent
I thought Friday the 13th on NES was a great game as well. I’m glad I found somebody else who enjoyed it as well. Better late than never!
Yeah, I'm honestly shocked people hate this game. It's so good!
It's a good game and I have no idea why people say It's bad. I think some people just parrot what they hear.
@@Gatorade69 I think it's because of the AVGN review tbh
I Remember Renting Frankenstein for the NES, and *LOVING IT* i was playing it at my Grandmothers house, cause my mom had to work at the time.. i never liked my Grandmother because she was an Abusive Jerk who hid behind being a Christian for everything she did... she saw me fighting "Demon Horse" and had a Meltdown cause i quote "Brought a Demon into her home"
the sort of shit kids have to put up with. i swear.
ooof, sorry to hear that man.
I love Alien Syndrome on the Game Gear!!! One of my favorite on this system!
it's such a great system! :D
1:23 do you realize that both Monster and Doctor treat each other as father and son? Especially the monster. This gives him the right of having the same last name as his father
Friday the 13th is the best game on your list. It's a awesome classic! Good game!
It's a surprisingly good game
New ghostbusters 2 was the first nes game i played as a kid
Pacnsacdave did three rom hacks of Friday the 13th that let you play as Freddy against Jason, Jason against Freddy or Laurie Strode vs Michael Myers respectively, with weapon upgrades, fireplace lighting progress and health items being shared across all playable characters.
haha that's freaking awesome
