NES Die Hard is a top 25 nes game. It even has multiple endings depending on your time based choices. If you get the timing perfect you cans actually jump off the roof.
I got to say I really enjoy Home Alone on the Genesis. It has some great ideas and is 9ne of my favorite Genesis Hidden Gems/Underrated games. It is the first game I remember playing with a crafting system. I also love how every house has a different theme and that items are random. Here's some tips. At the start the wet bandits drive around scouting the houses to rob, this is always random. You can take this time to spy on them to know what houses they will hit and to also loot. You want to try to loot and trap the houses as quick as you can. You can even loot houses while they are in a house being slowed down by your traps. Some weapons are really powerful but the items required to make them are a bit more rare, hence you want to loot as fast as you can. It's best to shoot them and then lure them into your traps. There's definitely a right way to play it. I really enjoyed it because every game is different though the gameplay loop boils down to the same thing.
Problem with the MD version is that with different combinations it's difficult to keep track of all of them while remembering you have a timer while also making sure you evade the Wet Bandits. Too many things to keep track of, too little time.
If you wanna potentially stretch the definition of Christmas game a lil', Power Blade 2 for NES is set on Christmas Eve and both starts and ends with a rendition of Silent Night. I need to play that one myself, it looks and sounds spectacular ngl
I actually owned Home Alone for the SNES as a kid. The basement music coupled with the grey brick background made me half expect to see Sub-Zero and Kano fighting down there.

Good on you for throwing some DOS in there, 16-bit console gamers usually act like that world never existed. ;) Thanks for the GBC gem highlight, don't think that handheld got enough love by most developers. Idk but I just don't think we'll be seeing Konami gambling unit reviews in the future like we did for their video games lol. Some nice SMS highlights too and had me thinking about Sega Lord X's SMS mini speculation videos. Was thinking it might have some potential in bridging the SMS and GG through it's emulation foundation especially in adjustable screen size matters. Always surprised me Brazil didn't make a SMS-2 with GG features like expanded color and the controller Pause button, where maybe M2 could do that with an SMS mini.
Was wondering if someone would make a review of Christmas themed video games! This was awesome! Ironically, I'm just ordered James Pond 2 for the Sega Genesis for Christmas LOL!😂 At least it's not the GBA Version!😉
I can think of a couple other Christmas programs (they're not really games) that I had as a kid for the Commodore 64. I was a little kid when I got them as gifts and I really liked them at the time, but if you didn't grow up with them they wouldn't be that exciting for most people. Little kids might still like them, I guess. "Jingle Disk": this is an animated story about a mouse doing stuff on Christmas. (I don't remember the details, but it's not a complicated story or anything.) It also has the ability to print Christmas cards. There is an Apple ][ version of the game on the other side of the disk. I got to watch it once on my school's computer, and remember some things being different, but I don't remember what those differences were. "A Popples Christmas Adventure": A similar type of program to "Jingle Disk", but this one features the Popples, where were a plush toyline from the 80s that I doubt anyone that wasn't alive then is even aware of. They were little creatures that could turn into balls. This one also told a story, and at one point there is a maze, so I guess it technically counts as a game.
It's such a weird idea to make a game christmas video game though I could see how some game companies would like the idea since they can use a recognizable character like Santa Claus and use public domain christmas music saving money that would otherwise be spent on a character designer and composer.
NES Home Alone 2 wasn't that bad. You just had to know what you where doing and how to get the crazy 1-ups and power ups. @@st1ka one day I will try it again if my lynx still works, which I doubt, but for what I remember the health was never enough, so there might be something I missed... or just bad game
@@st1ka Yeah it just seems extremely claustrophobic, something which handheld games tended to do back then due to having tiny screens. The Game Gear did a better job handling the screen crunch, opting for smaller sprites instead of the Atari Lynx's massive ones.
that Gameboy Grinch game is semi-infamous at this point for how obviously horny whoever drew the art was for the Grinch. Ignoring that uh, tidbit, merry Christmas st1ka!
You have to remember James actually likes Castlevania 2, his first AVGN video (when he was Angry Nintendo Nerd). While I don't think he enjoyed Die Hard, it's fair to say AVGN defecates on good games, even ones he likes.
Santa Claus Junior honestly looks like a WayFoward game, along the likes of Wendy: Every Witch Way and Shantae. Really impressive animation and use of color, but the one giveaway that it's European is the heavy use of arpeggios in the music. I also agree that the SMS version of Batman Returns is really good. I don't know if I'd call it better than the SNES version, but it's certainly underrated. Kinda surprised the Sega CD version wasn't covered, it was the Mega Drive game but with much improved music and cool driving levels.
Don’t be too hard on 3D Xmas Adventure. I was part of the GCS community back in the day and yes the engine wasn’t the same quality of Doom or Hexen but to be honest for a highschool kid who didn’t have a lot of programming experience this was pretty good for making a simple 3D shooter. The developer Pie In the Sky also worked hard to port the engine to Windows 95 adding the ability to import 3D models and also had released a more advance AI engine towards the end of the life of the product.
Yeah AVGN exists to only shit on games, not speak positively about them. Plus James doesn't even play them (anymore) and it was Matei who did most of the heavy lifting on the channel. It breaks my heart as It was the first CZcams channel I subscribed to but It was also the first I unsubscribed from especially after the Monster Madness plagiarism. James went from someone who I used to look up to to kind of a joke, especially after reading parts from his autobiography.
@@Gatorade69 To be fair Matei isn't exactly informed on video games either. On his Master System a few years ago he treated the console library like he just discovered fire. 😆
@@pferreira1983 Yeah, he also started the rumor that Hagane was a blockbuster exclusive. Still James has no idea about video games besides what he played as a kid or with his daughters and Mike makes a living streaming them so I trust Mike a bit more when it comes to video games.
As kids, I think we all wanted to get games for Christmas, not games about Christmas. A slight change to the wording can really change the meaning of a phrase quite a bit.
My sister had "Home Alone" for the Gameboy when we were kids. It wasn't the worst game in the world. I enjoyed playing it from time to time, even though I realized it had major flaws. lol
Well, the idea of the video was originally to check out bad games. It's just that I ended up liking a lot of them so I had to change the title and intro. That's why I didn't include them :P
Not bad. The Grinch game does not really use much in the way of anything from the film's license though, all the visuals are based on the book. Probably for the best, but still a bit of a miss.
Maybe in Santa Saves The Earth the fairy who is angry at Santa is the Tooth Fairy, and she's jealous of him because he gets milk and cookies for his efforts while she gets a sack full of pieces of children's heads. Which makes her sound like a psychopath when describing teeth that way.😱🧚♀
When I got my original Gameboy for Christmas it came with Mario and Yoshi.. the puzzle game. Home alone looks like a AAA game compared to how bad Mario and Yoshi game was.
I don't think you gave the NES Home Alone a fair shake. It's far more challenging than you think, and your method for laying traps in a loop wouldn't work because: A: All Traps can only be used 3 times, with one exception (the chandeliers) 2: Each trap has a different "knock-out" time, with the Chandeliers being the longest, which can actually be used 4 times in total if you are successful in dropping them on the Wet bandits as they pass beneath you on the second floor (requires timing/luck because bandit search at random unless they see you.) D: Surviving the whole 20 minute is easier said than done and you didn't even mention the hiding spots, with each also having their own time limits and can only be passed over twice by an enemy when hidden. Keeping track of how many traps you've used and how long you have hidden in the hiding spots makes the game a unique experience that is unlike any other NES game, and is actually developed by Bethesda, makers of stuff like Skyrim, so for NES game 'gems', I honestly don't think you have the stones to tackle the game proper. I've only ever beaten it once with save states, I doubt many could beat it without cheating.
@@st1ka For a Home Alone game, it did a lot more to make the game unique and replayable, and challenging enough at a time when kids had to make do with what they had. For those who understood the rules and kept trying, it's almost Dark Souls level of frustrating the closer you get to the 20 minute mark before being caught. I give it high marks for it's divisiveness and challenge alone.
@robotacular9601 I do agree that the game does a good job at being faithful to the movie. Personally though, I feel the MS-DOS game did a better job at balancing it though ^-^
@@st1ka yeah its a prequel to Cthulhu saves the world which is a fun parody of JRPG's, the same dev did a lot of games like that. How is this channel not way WAY bigger? I don't remember how long I've been subbed but I hardly ever get recommendations, I guess. I'll click that bell, but seriously YT, WTF?
youtube being youtube lol
How the Gunch Stunch Crunchmuns is a classic
ah yes, the bootleg sequel
I'm so glad to see Santa Claus Saves the Earth on this list, in a weirdly morbid sense of the word. First saw it from Cadiccarus' old video on it. How that game got a PS1 port is beyond me.
It's such a weird game. It's terrible... but oddly fascinating
The Die Hard games always impressed me.
James Pond, on the other hand, I can't figure out for the life of me
Right?! I don't know why James Pond is so loved.
Die hard is kind of amazing though
That's a skill issue you guys suffer from. 😂
I really like these video with just a bunch of random games themed for a holiday. Great work man.
Thank you! Glad you like them :D
Thank you for including Die Hard XD
Anytime! xD
Home alone for the snes may have been bad but it holds a special place in my childhood.
Understandable. I have a few games like that myself ^^
Robocod is weird, as all ports from the DS/PS2 version onwards have completely different levels for some reason. They remade the game! :S
Haha really? That's so weird haha
Batman Returns on the Atari Lynx ruined my christmas, glad to see it mentioned :) It's so bad I think I never beaten level 1 !
what is with that exploding bank?! I could not get past it
@@st1ka one day I will try it again if my lynx still works, which I doubt, but for what I remember the health was never enough, so there might be something I missed... or just bad game
Yeah I felt the level design was just not good
@@st1ka Yeah it just seems extremely claustrophobic, something which handheld games tended to do back then due to having tiny screens. The Game Gear did a better job handling the screen crunch, opting for smaller sprites instead of the Atari Lynx's massive ones.
@@zanegandini5350 indeed, making the sprites larger often made games feel constrained
So many of these old games are straight-up money grabs for the production companies and disappointments for the kids that managed to save $40-$60.
Sad but true
that Gameboy Grinch game is semi-infamous at this point for how obviously horny whoever drew the art was for the Grinch.
Ignoring that uh, tidbit, merry Christmas st1ka!
haha really? I'll have to look into that
I swear Home Alone got more video game adaptations than sequels
for now at least. They're still making sequels haha
I always tell people Die Hard is my favorite Christmas movie and they're usually pretty impressed and think I'm a unique, interesting person.
That's a lifehack if I ever saw one
Batman Returns on SNES is one of my all time favorite Konami beat em ups! And I still have it in my SNES collection.
It's such a great game! ^^
There's some great games on this list I'd be honored to have under my Christmas tree.
glad you liked it ^^
The Escapists has a Santa level but I've never finished it yet. Santa also appears in AVGN Adventures and Clayfighter
Oh interesting
You have to remember James actually likes Castlevania 2, his first AVGN video (when he was Angry Nintendo Nerd). While I don't think he enjoyed Die Hard, it's fair to say AVGN defecates on good games, even ones he likes.
Understandable ^^
Santa Claus Junior honestly looks like a WayFoward game, along the likes of Wendy: Every Witch Way and Shantae. Really impressive animation and use of color, but the one giveaway that it's European is the heavy use of arpeggios in the music. I also agree that the SMS version of Batman Returns is really good. I don't know if I'd call it better than the SNES version, but it's certainly underrated. Kinda surprised the Sega CD version wasn't covered, it was the Mega Drive game but with much improved music and cool driving levels.
Indeed. I actually had to check to make sure it wasn't a WayForward game because it really gave me that vibe
@@st1ka The arpeggios didn't give you an "Is it European?" Bingo?
@@zanegandini5350 surprisingly no lol
Don’t be too hard on 3D Xmas Adventure. I was part of the GCS community back in the day and yes the engine wasn’t the same quality of Doom or Hexen but to be honest for a highschool kid who didn’t have a lot of programming experience this was pretty good for making a simple 3D shooter. The developer Pie In the Sky also worked hard to port the engine to Windows 95 adding the ability to import 3D models and also had released a more advance AI engine towards the end of the life of the product.
Oh I get that it was made to promote the engine and I think that as a tool of the time, it was pretty cool.
A modern version of that Grinch game would be awesome, Konami.
I'd buy it! haha
yeah avgn's caused lots of bad rep for good games. but it's for fun so idk why people take its critiques so seriously. cool vid btw thanks
Yeah good point. I have to admit he's given the Sega CD a bad rep. :P
@@Gatorade69 "Yeah AVGN exists to only shit on games...". Sometimes literally.
Another fantastic video!! So many games I never knew about!! Plus, the perfect Christmas gift of a Famicom Disk system card from St1ka!!😄👍👍👍
Haha thank you!
Haven’t watched this guy before, I love his accent
Haha thank you
Subbed because of the voice, accent and whimsy. Never lose the accent. Hope you do well.
Haha thank you ^^
Good work. Happy holidays.
Thank you and you too ^^
Great topic, well-done video!
Thank you! ^^
As kids, I think we all wanted to get games for Christmas, not games about Christmas. A slight change to the wording can really change the meaning of a phrase quite a bit.
haha indeed
Fun fact, there was a PS1 version of Santa Clause saves the earth.
Oh I know... but I didn't want to play that game again haha
love this channel. one of my new favorites. merry christmas!
Thank you! And merry Christmas:D
I only remember playing Home Alone 2 on the Gameboy. I couldn't get past the first level with the stupid elevator!!
Haha glad I'm not the only one who got stuck
How many times did Audi try to convince you about Bubsy being a Christmas game?
Too many times
Wait how is Bubsy a Christmas game (it isn't) ?
My sister had "Home Alone" for the Gameboy when we were kids. It wasn't the worst game in the world. I enjoyed playing it from time to time, even though I realized it had major flaws. lol
Yeah, it wasn't TERRIBLE, but I wasn't a big fan lol
@@st1ka I don't think anyone was a big fan of that game, including the developers at THQ. 😅
Plot twist: the grinch made all these to make us start hating Christmas
That would make too much sense! :P
Thanks for all the great content throughout the year!
I try ^^
Whoa! CZcams just informed me about the donation! Thank you so much!!!
I appreciate all your hard work! Every video is fantastic.
@@robertdanker6193 thanks man :D
Dope video. Subscribed!
Thank you! Glad you liked it! :D
Where's Jazz Jackrabbit Holiday Hare 94 and 95, and Jazz 2 Holiday Hare 98/Christmas Chronicles?
Well, the idea of the video was originally to check out bad games. It's just that I ended up liking a lot of them so I had to change the title and intro. That's why I didn't include them :P
@@st1ka ahh.
so basically the virgin Christmas games vs the chad horror halloween games.
haha exactly
Hui that santa clause jr. game looks pretty nice😮😮
it's a surprisingly fun game
This was a fun video. I enjoyed your accent!
Thank you! Glad you liked it :D
Not bad. The Grinch game does not really use much in the way of anything from the film's license though, all the visuals are based on the book. Probably for the best, but still a bit of a miss.
Considering I'm not a fan of the movie that's definitely a good thing lol
Great video! 👍
Thank you! ^^
Between Die Hard and Friday the 13th, AVGN kinda ruined game discourse by just shitting on everything huh?
And the Sega CD. I really like the Sega CD, but people tend to trash it and the arguments are always the same ones the AVGN used.
Maybe in Santa Saves The Earth the fairy who is angry at Santa is the Tooth Fairy, and she's jealous of him because he gets milk and cookies for his efforts while she gets a sack full of pieces of children's heads. Which makes her sound like a psychopath when describing teeth that way.😱🧚♀
Damn tooth fairies! They ruined teeth!
I used to know a guy who played the grinch on ps1 like that was his spyro.
Dude loved that crap game
Haha, I didn't try the PS1 version... kinda don't want to lol
When I got my original Gameboy for Christmas it came with Mario and Yoshi.. the puzzle game.
Home alone looks like a AAA game compared to how bad Mario and Yoshi game was.
Hah yeah, Yoshi's cookie. I never played it tbh
Merry Christmas St1ka. Have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year 🥳.
Thank you and you too ^^
@@st1ka I really enjoy your content dude. My most favourite is the Brazilian comics of each of the games . My most favourite is the Megaman one.
aww thanks man. The Braziliam megaman video was super fun. It's just a shame that the well of brazilian comics has run dry
NES Die Hard is one of my favourite games on the system actually
I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it
Wow home alone for DOS, I'll have to try it 🙂
It's surprisingly good
I don't think you gave the NES Home Alone a fair shake. It's far more challenging than you think, and your method for laying traps in a loop wouldn't work because:
A: All Traps can only be used 3 times, with one exception (the chandeliers)
2: Each trap has a different "knock-out" time, with the Chandeliers being the longest, which can actually be used 4 times in total if you are successful in dropping them on the Wet bandits as they pass beneath you on the second floor (requires timing/luck because bandit search at random unless they see you.)
D: Surviving the whole 20 minute is easier said than done and you didn't even mention the hiding spots, with each also having their own time limits and can only be passed over twice by an enemy when hidden.
To be fair a game being hard or made by Bethesda doesn't mean it's good. The issue is the game is simply boring.
I recommend Cthulhu Saves Christmas, now thats a good christmas game
Oh! I don't know that game. I should check it out.
@@st1ka yeah its a prequel to Cthulhu saves the world which is a fun parody of JRPG's, the same dev did a lot of games like that. Its a hilarious adventure that has the Christmas Spirit and the best part is its a shorter rompt, like a few hours so it doesn't overstay its welcome
I recommend the entire library from Zeboyd
@@BrenTenkage ah makes sense! Thanks I'll check it out ^^
@@st1ka glad I could give ya something, might make for a good short video to give ya something that won't ruin the holidays

Óptimo vídeo.
O Paratrooper é um jogo genial! Tantas horas que joguei. Devia haver uma versão para Master System ou Game Gear.
Paratrooper é excelente! :D
Over time I have figured out you can tell how old a player is in a shooter game by how frequently they jump.
That's interesting. Tell me more. How old am I? xD
@@st1ka - Don't you think it's sounds a bit defensive to take the insinuation that jumping in a shooter is desperate measures taken by younger gamers and to respond to that by asking the person to nail down your age?
I will tell you more though... you won't find anyone like that on some the hardest multiplayer games out there like full realism ww2 plane stuff, they won't stand a chance at anything but frustration.
To be honest I don't play shooters online... or any game online really so I wouldn't know

@@computercrazies Oh, I'm afraid I actually don't like talking to other people when gaming. chatting with other folks just distracts me and takes me away from the experience.
the nes home alone traps are not infinite, they usually have 4 times you can use each one

If you can, I recommend getting it. It's so good.
Paratrooper? I seem to remember somebody put that on a computer when I was in 4th grade.
that was probably me! :P
I actually like the music from The Daze Before Christmas.
I can understand that. On a technical level, it's well done. It's just that it got a bit too much for me xD
@@st1ka Yeah. The unfortunate thing about Christmas songs is that they are done to death before it even becomes Christmas. They aren't bad songs (except for Wonderful Christmastime) but they are played through most of November and after hearing them everyday for about 2 months, you get sick of them.
@@Shugunou Indeed. I know it's popular to hate on Mariah Carrey's christmas song, but the truth is, the song is actually pretty good.
