I lived in very rural Hokkaido for several years and it was wild (as an American) seeing old-fashioned Christian farmers be communists.
Very chill communists.
There was this one house that had a hand-painted sign with like, cute tole-painted ragdolls, and in soft cursive letters “Japan Communist Party”. Doilies for the proletariat.
Yeah I live in Sapporo and they don't really strike me as radicals or anything communist.
Lots of small rural communities are arranged in line with communist theory. It might even be considered the default condition in pre-industrial rural society. Communism works very well when there is mutual trust among all the members of the community.
When you get into larger groups, where social cohesion and trust is not a given, it becomes a lot harder to sustain.
@@tomblaise bad take imo, I think that people in cities are just removed from their political power compared to people outside of them, the solution is to re-engage proletariat with political power through confederations of directly democratic councils for each neighbourhood of a city. Instead of political power flowing down from the government, political power shall flow upwards from the communes.
Those in the very limited government would lead by obeying the communes they were decided to coordinate policy for and will be able to be recalled at any time.
That's pretty cool! I also heard the Communists have some of the more interesting political posters as well. I wonder if there are any Churches in Hokkaido that have a majority JCP membership
@@dafyddroff8084 Perhaps you don’t live in a city, but it’s incredibly difficult to offer kindness to others when literally everyone is a stranger. You can be rude to others, and you will literally never see them again.
As a kid I lived in a small rural community. You knew everyone and if you were an asshole, or exploited others, you were shunned by the community. The people there were very anti-communist, but their actions were largely about prioritizing the community and helping others when they were in need. It’s easy to care when you know everyone, and hard to wrong the community when everyone knows you.
With large groups comes anonymity, which both discourages compassion and encourages taking whatever you can get. Your description sounds like meaningless idealism, without any ground in reality. I could also make up an ideal society where everything just works, that’s why we have things like fiction. Reality must deal with the issues fiction can ignore, and the reality of large cities is there’s no amount of social conditioning, short of brainwashing that can make people altruistic to a large group of strangers.
The crossover between Christianity and Socialism in Japan is super interesting to me, considering how heavily associated Socialism is with Atheism and even Antitheism in the West. I've made videos on three different early-20th century Japanese Anarchist women for my channel - Kanno Sugako, Ito Noe, and Kaneko Fumiko - and two of them were influenced by Christianity to some extent early in their political journeys, while the third was actively involved in debate surrounding Christian political advocacy. It's something I hope to research in a bit more depth at some point.
Socialism and Christianity also intersect to some degree in Latin America I noticed.

Okay just wanna pop in and say this video was very interesting, i think you have potential as a channel. Japan is a country whose internal politics are rarely discussed in the west and then a party whose ideology tends to be downplayed in importance in western countries.

The legacy of the Japanese Communist Party is not in Japan, but outside of Japan.
1. Communist Party of China: some founding members were educated in Japan and was exposed to Japanese-translated Marxist literature
2. Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League: satellite party in Mainland China and the founders were influenced by the JCP
3. Today's South Korea's democratic socialists: despite Marxist-Leninism is illegal in South Korea, JCP's literature influenced the South Koreans
As my Japanese co-worker whose aunt was an active member of the JCP said: "It is going to be disintergrated and eventually the party members will be distributed to 2-3 other political parties."

Some parties like the british labour party and even communist party of india have christan socialist elements/electorates. The assyrian (pre catholic/orthodox) christians in kerela (india) are a pretty interesting bunch of ppl with many of them being staunch communist party supporters and devout christians.

Same here! I did not know about the party's rivalry with the Komeito, but it is deeply fascinating and makes sense when he explained their contrasting views and competition for certain voters.
Ahhhh "pop-history" is also one of my biggest gripes. With the rise of tiktok I keep seeing videos of stuff on the exact same topics CZcams covered 5 years ago. Nothings better than finding a CZcamsr that actually knows a lot about a niche and puts the work in to make good content for it

Love how on the map, the eastern half of Indonesia, Madagascar, the UK, Sri Lanka, New Guinea, the Solomons, Australia, and New Zealand all just...disappeared. The Zainichi Koreans are definitely an interesting group. They came to Japan because of Korea once being a part of Japan, but they lost their Japanese nationality in 1952. Zainichi Koreans who have lived without any gap since the end of World War II or before and their lineal descendants are considered Special Permanent Residents. Nearly all of them in Japan can trace their ancestry to the southern part of Korea, but thanks to Cold War division are divided ideologically between Mindan who are pro-ROK and the Chongryon who are pro-DPRK.
The Chongryon is more outspoken because they're nationalist against taking up a Japanese nationality over a Korean one, operate many Korean schools in Japan that are partly funded by the DPRK government and that the schools do trips to the DPRK. The Chongryon is also represented in the DPRK's Supreme People's Assembly with five seats
Honestly kudos to the JCP for being ambitious of running every district. Sure they lose money in doing so, but there's a difference between dreaming and actually DOING! The one who falls and gets up is stronger than the one who never tried. Do not fear failure but rather, fear not TRYING! Really well done with this! Though I do want to point out that at 0:31, this is just the USSR in its 1945-1991 form, not when the USSR was originally founded. Sakhalin, Kaliningrad, the Baltic states, western Ukraine and western Belarus didn't become part of the USSR until WWII. The Caspian Sea also shouldn't be white as it's a big body of water!
I love how other Americans are shocked when they find out Christian socialism is a thing in other countries...of course it's a concept that makes sense! Christian socialism has been a thing in Latin America through liberation theology. Socialism is about helping the common people, and that's what Christianity should be about, unity and striving to be better people by being Good Samaritans. Jesus even said that a rich man would find it difficult to enter the kingdom of Heaven. If Islamic socialism can work, so can Christian socialism.

The reasons you're under a government and a system is because you wish to be protected during times of war when soldiers protect you, when your car burns and you need a fire fighter and when someone robs you and you need a police. These services aren't free and you should pay if you want to rely on them. Also, the streets you drive on, the infrastructure you use, the parks you take walks in is all built by you and your fellow people's taxes. Nothing in this world is free but at least it's a small price for big returns

5:19 I'm sure there exists a minority faction of the LDP that support LGBTQ+ marriage, but I still find 'increased support for gay marriage' EXTREMELY misleading as atm Komeito and all opposition parties are open to talks for legalising gay marriage and only the LDP is trying to stop it...

you didn't mention how another reason for the split was much of the founding membership of the JCP was anarchist type socialists and communists. Anarchists tend to oppose vanguard style socialism like what existed in China and Russia.

CPJ has done much better than CPUSA, but they have the same problem of being anti-CPC and anti-Soviet. They need to embrace a pro-PRC, pro-Russia, pro-DPRK stance and drop the anime art style, and embrace traditional Japanese style if they are too win over the Japanese masses. They also need to work with the Soka Gakkai (Komeito)

not as much as in the past, but still significant. In Kyoto city assembly JCP has 18 seats and their main rivals LDP have 20.
Very informative video. Just one small thing, I think that the LDP hasn't really softened their views on gay marriage and LGBT rights as much as you think. I read an article recently which suggested that 90% of elected LDP representatives were opposed to gay marriage. This is in spite of the fact that support for gay marriage has increased rapidly among the general population.
If you have some evidence to the contrary, I'll take a look at it though.
From his LDP video, I think it's an oversimplification in *this* video. Some members of the party are beginning to be pro-LGBT, so we're at the very beginning of that incorporation process.
That's fair, looking back I think would have been better to clarify that by phrasing it as an "beginning to show an increased support for LGBT issues". For me this was largely highlighted by the last LDP leadership race (which basically determines the Prime Minister as the leader of the LDP is almost always the PM). With two of the four leading candidates Kono Taro and Seiko Noda publicly being open to the idea of gay marriage. However both did end up losing to the current PM Kishida - but I think it would be fair to say that the factions and independent members that backed the two within the LDP are beginning to become more inclusive as the concern to LBGT rights become more important. It might be because they are genuinely concerned with it, but it could also be self interest in the face of factional politics and as those public concerns grow more politically important. Also under Kishida there have been very very small and incremental move towards listening to the concerns for LBGT rights and meeting with members of the community, but it is definitely not at the level where they are bringing legislation for marriage equality to the table yet.
This may sound like a conspiracy theory but the LDP opposes same-sex marriage because they are connected to the Unification Church. The Unification Church's scriptures also state that same-sex marriage is a sin. So there is no doubt that the opposition to same-sex marriage is also influenced by the Unification Church.

I enjoy your videos. I must comment though on the issue of the JCP acting as spoilers. The last few elections the JCP has cooperated with the other parties against the LDP and this clearly didn't work. The LDP's greatest success is based on the failure of any political party offering a distinct policy. While they were working with the other parties the coalition's platform seemed to be solely, "we would like to be in power". Any failure of the JCP and definitely the old socialist party is not that they were too left wing its actually the opposite. For the JCP to remain relevant it needs to come up with a clear socialist platform.

Unlikely. The Soka Gakkai are pretty absolutist, like some of the American millenarist religions (the founder is known to have studied the methods of the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses).
I would hope so. Im Soka Gakkai international member and here is preached peace and coexistence, human revolution. Tho it’s my understanding that the factions in Japan are more dogmatic and seek more to control than to work towards the human revolution. I don’t believe that the leader, Ikeda, likes this approach tho, cause it very much goes against his preachings

@@TroubledTrooper There are many Soka Gakkai congregations across the world, who, working independently of one another, come to different conclusions about how they should practice it.
There are almost certainly some you could call absolutist and it saddens me that some peoples first encounter with the practice is one of these groups. I think it might be more so in Japan.

It sounds like the jcp experienced the slow creep into social democracy that many communist parties did throughout the 20th century. Idk the political situation in japan beyond the stray english language article or video but hopefully they rework their political strategy and bring in new young radicals to reinvigorate the party. Idk their internal structure but I'm guessing that would be an uphill battle
Well the JCP made up the Old Left of Japan along with the Japanese Socialist Party. There were more radical movements of the New Left in the 1960s against the Old Left, but like the US they became so radical and exclusionary that they ended up largely disliked by the general public and isolated from even the Liberal and Progressive side.
The biggest thing that would help in my opinion is reforming the electoral system to make it more representative of the general populace that way more parties can enter into the Diet. The Japanese electoral reforms of 1994 was largely done to promote the creation of two large parties in the Diet, but it led the LDP-Komeito alliance to become the dominate force in politics. Although there is some hope for a left party to win with a larger youth voter turnout with the Democratic Party of Japan beating the LDP and ruling the country from 2009-2012
