    About 2 or 3 months ago, Tina and I went to the Superstition Wilderness to backpack in Haunted Canyon. It started out great, but soon enough, things changed for the worse.
    Don't take life for granted. Find what you love to do and go out and do it like today is your last day alive.
    Oh, and maybe take a wilderness first aid course or two....

    Wow. We are blown away by all the positive comments that we have received about this video. We thought that some people might have wondered what was going on and felt an update might be due. We truly appreciate each and every one of you and all of the encouragement you've given us.
    Hearing all the other stories of other people's struggles puts things in perspective. Hope you, your friends and your families all stay safe and well.
    Oh....And Tina will definitely still be around. We already have a couple adventures filmed that I'm working on now and plenty of (mellower) plans for the future. And if she isn't along on a trip, I'm sure it won't be difficult for me to get footage of her flipping me off that I can tack onto the end.

    A diagnosis of congestive heart failure ended my career in search and rescue. Fine ever since the initial complaint but too risky to continue as a rescue climber. Several years later my physician says he thinks I had a heart attack. Always have had high blood pressure, and on several meds to control it. Since living full time at 7000’, I go to the hospital once a month to have 500 mls siphoned off. They tell me I’m producing too much blood to compensate for thin air. But hey, I’d rather die on a mountain than in a hospital bed! 8 years with NPS SAR taught me a lot, not the least of which is never leave a party member alone(especially your wife!). And always remember, the summit is optional, getting home is mandatory. Slow and steady Tina, you’ll get it back. Good luck and keep on keepin on!

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Před 2 lety +2

      Sorry to hear about your health issues. Love the philosophy on the mountain vs the bed. I did learn that I get a little summit fever anytime I'm out there hiking. I will admit I thought about continuing to the cabin. But it was too scary at the time. Even the blood vessels burst in one of her eyes. We were sure she had had one, and were very relieved to learn she hadn't.

      @@JerryArizona real glad she’s ok. You did the right thing. My wife was on the team with me, and twice she ran into serious problems. Once with hypothermia, and once with heat stroke. Both ends of the spectrum. Scared the shit out of me. It’s way different rescuing a subject you don’t know vs. one you love. I always got real nervous when we got split into different teams on rescues. I would be more worried about her than our subject. I bet Tina worries about you when she’s sitting at home and your dangling off some 9 mil rope in a remote canyon! You guys look out for each other, lots more adventure down the road. P.S., get a Jeep!

Had a similar experience, but I was the patient (my wife is a ex cardio thoracic transplant nurse)..... passed out on a very easy hike (Deems Hill in Phoenix). Recovered after wife dumped cold water down my back and was able to hike back to our truck. Long story short, ended up having a 50-70% blockage in my RCA, no stent, diagnosis of stable angina, and heart disease, and now after 36 sessions of cardiac rehab I am in better shape than I have ever been, and symptoms are gone. Even though I have a family history of heart disease, I am 6 feet tall, weight 170 pounds and considered myself healthy and in decent shape. You can never judge a book by its cover! 😀

I am an avid hiker, trail runner..have never had any problems with my heart, and after having Covid I was just so weak and fatigued, out of breath doing nothing and chalked it up to asthma, which Ive always had. Then, weird, different pain and heart palpitations began happening, bought an oximeter and tealized my oxygen was fine, but my resting heart rate was 110 to 140 at times! Never worried about my heart before, completely scared the shit out of me. Getting all sorts of tests, next week getting a holster monitor put on to see the irregularities of my new, fast paced hr(used to be around 55 resting), since my bloodwork shows nothing bad. Jerry, I pray your wife makes a speedy recovery. Physically it's not fun getting older and more fragile.
    I just stumbled upon your channel about a week ago and am loving it. Your filming and editing skills are tremendous, and your videos are both educational and hilarious! Plus I love your outtakes!.
    My wife and I are in our 60's and can't do the long hikes but we do what we can. We live in Michigan and last September we did the South Kaibab to Phantom to Bright Angel trip but we did it in 3 days camping at Phantom and Indian Gardens. Loved every minute of it but that is a big hike for us. This fall we're spending two weeks in Southern Utah to do the Mighty 5. Getting pumped for that and your videos are helping in the research.
    Keep up the fantastic work and both of you stay safe and healthy!

    Keeping fingers and toes crossed that Tina gets through this. She is a tough cookie which is probably why “rest of the body” “compensated for underlying issues”. He was hiking one of the popular urban trails and had to be taken off trail by his friends and went to the ER, like you he was hypertensive, tachycardia, SOB, chest pain. Turns out, he had Endocarditis. He's been treating successful and doing great. Happy to know that your 👍 OK, looking forward to your next hiking adventures

    My husband and I watch your videos regularly. I’m in awe of the trails you guys have done. Jeff and I like to run trails and appreciate the enthusiasm and challenges you guys have on your hikes. Listening to Tinas experience really got to me. I had the same type of experience six months ago after my second dose. It was a scary. My blood pressure was high when I went to the emergency room and my heart rate was low. I went to the cardiologist, he put me on blood pressure medication and ran a lot of tests. Like you I had never had issues with my blood pressure before. All test came back normal/clear. I am now off the blood pressure medication and seem to be doing well. I went from running to hardly being able to walk to back to running. Finished my first half marathon, two months ago I didn’t imagine it was possible. I really hope and believe you will be just as strong as before. And will fully recover. Thank you guys for sharing.

    Saw this video and my heart sank. I have really enjoyed your adventures, especially Tina giving Jerry a hard time with a smile on her face. Your videos have given my wife and I (58 and retired) confidence to go father in our own adventures. We own a class B RV with a goal of visiting every national park and each NCAA championship at least once, there are over 60 sports to see. On our last trip to Death Valley we did a hike that we wouldn't have finished without watching some of your scramble videos. Thank you.
    Covid STINKS and I hope they can figure out what is happening. I got Covid last month after going to the NCAA Men's Hockey tournament, our first championship since Covid. I have many food/environment allergies and it now feels like I'm having reactions all the time, my asthma is barely controlled. I am fully vaccinated and almost always wore a mask except at the last event. I recovered quickly due to monoclonal antibodies, they work extremely well but that doesn't mean your body returns to your baseline. I hope Tina finds a good healthcare team and they are able to address it.
    I also wanted to thank you for talking about the symptoms associated with women's heart attacks. They are not the same as men's and too many people don't realize they can vary significantly in women. Both my mother and mother in-law hard heart attacks that were not addressed quickly because people around them did not realize they were in trouble. My daughter is an ED resident and I've heard from her how many individuals in healthcare and the public still don't realize the differences and we lose too many women as a result.
    Looks like you just posted a video on an excursion to Lake Powell, glad you are still getting out and hope you get back to 100% soon. Love ALL of the videos, Jerry looks like you do most of the video shooting and editing. I enjoy your hard efforts, learning about new adventures that helps me plan when we take a trip out west, we live in Minnesota. I really enjoy the voice overs, especially when your sarcastic wit comes through, which is almost always. Please take care.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Před 2 lety

      Thank you. I hope you get back to 100%. It took me about 1 1/2~2 months and I still don't have my energy levels back after 5. But it's getting there. We're hoping Tina gets back to 100% eventually. It just takes time. Unfortunately, they didn't offer any treatment out here other than 'go to the ED if you think you may be dying.'
      Lake Powell was a good time. Even if you aren't to 100%, there are still ways to enjoy the outdoors.

    i had no idea tina was a nurse ! jerry, i am going to guess your not a doctor . when i was 49 i had throat cancer ! i didnt smoke or drink, was a runner and triathlete in tremendous shape ! doctors told me it would take a year out of my life ! feeding tube for 9 months, very difficult chemo and radiation in patient. as soon as i could i was walking, then biking and finally running. it was a slow process. i felt like i was robbed, a thief stole my health. i was mentally motivated to get my health back and i did. now it feels like a bad dream ! you can do it too, i am rooting for you to recover your health. i predict a successful outcome, tommy montana

    Have missed you Tina. Thanks for this video. Prayers and positive thoughts for you. Life can really throw curves at times……we started out to hike the Colorado Trail in June 2020. It was over 100 degrees in Denver then. We made it to thru the second section when I had severe issues…I ended up calling for help on my Garmin and was evacuated out …..long story short, we got off the trail and return home immediately. I immediately went to Urgent Care to the doctor because I could not stand or put any weight on my left leg. Long story short, I had a massive blood clot in the leg plus dozens and dozens of smaller blood clots and was immediately sent to the hospital. I was given blood thinners by IV……no I must take Xarelto daily the rest of my life. Luckily, the blood clots did not cause an embolism…..but it took a while to get fitness back so I can once again hike. Take care Tina…….you and Jerry have been an inspiration for us(my hubby is 73 and I am 70) and we love to watch your adventures and even have done some of them.
