  • From Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. What makes this special is the unexpected descant on the last verse. Earl Spencer had just finished his amazing eulogy and I wasn't watching when Make Me a Channel came on, but had it on in the background.... then that descant broke into the last verse and I had to rush back to the TV!

Growing up catholic, I learned this song and sung it many times during mass. It is one of my favorite hymns. I was pleasantly surprised to hear it being sung and sung well during this very sad occasion. Princess Diana's death affected me deeply for reasons unknown nearly 21 years later. Perhaps being born in July like she was albeit 5 years younger. Perhaps sorrow for a life cut far too short whatever the reason its mind boggling to think her sons have a grandmother in her 90s and their great grandmother lived to over 100, yet the woman closest to them only managed 36 years....

More than the brother's eulogy, more than Elton John's song, more than her favorite hymn (I Vow to Thee...), I really feel that everyone all over the world who took part in this funeral (including those of us who watched it via satellite at dawn in California) came together at the singing of this hyym because this hymn speaks simply of all the virtues the Princess possessed. The pomp, the class issues, the politics and the anger seemed to disappear here--especially at the beautiful last verse.
