Elon Musk's undue influence on U.S. foreign policy is a direct result of the Republican Party's long-held desire to privatize government. We have farmed out everything from space exploration to communications systems to private companies for decades because the GOP has consistently underfunded these programs dating back to the Reagan administration. @@christopherbrown9279 They have modified Kalashnakovs with large helical magazines and antiquated artillery pieces. The ammo for both the AKs and the artillery is mostly old enough for the stability of the shells and primers to be a worry. They have also a few attempts at higher-tech systems that have managed to make showings at demonstrations but whose development has been strangled by national poverty and 40 years of technology sanctions. Those systems aren't available in meaningful quantities nor expected to reliably work on the battlefield.
To be fair the modified AKs would be a better issue than what Russian recruits are getting now. Although the ammo stockpiles that come with them are lower quality stuff and dangerously old, at least they HAVE ammo stockpiles. And although the artillery lacks modern fire control systems it's probably not much worse than the unmaintained crap Russia's been using.
But all of this would have to reach Russian depots by train tracks, and I would not expect the train tracks to continue to exist if they start moving. Also if and when it does reach Russian depots it is not likely to be efficiently or effectively distributed to ground troops because of internal corruption. Every official along the way owes some particular group or other a favor, or will see an opportunity to curry favor, with respect to the distribution of this treasure.
Finally the most important thing to know is that NoKo's "giant stockpile which it has been building for years," even if it arrived and were effectively distributed, can be expended in about one month of the Russian Ukraine effort.

@@skp8748 Russia is not only at war with Ukraine, but also with the rest of the world. In autumn 2020, the European futures market for grain noted a rapid increase in grain prices. The reason: China has started to literally empty the international grain market. At the beginning of 2022 - just in time for the start of the invasion -, China bunkered around 159 million tons of grain. That's about half of the total supply available in the world. China has not thereby secured its own supply of grain, but can buy influence, for example when developing countries apply to China for help because they cannot pay for their imports on the world market. It is therefore safe to assume that Russia informed China of its intentions in advance.
The partial loss of Ukraine as a major grain exporter has caused food prices and inflation to rise worldwide, which is particularly felt by people in poorer countries who already have to spend a large part of their income on food.
Same with energy costs. The high inflation rates are not only driven by the increase in food prices, but also by the high fuel and energy costs, which in turn hit those regions that have hardly any resources of their own the most.

Do you mean to say that (earlier in the timeline) EM instructed SpaceX to disable its service over Russian-OCCUPIED territory of Ukraine (& of 🇷🇺) - instead of Russia?
Also, I don’t think this piece is disingenuous. People are shocked that EM consulted officials at the 🇷🇺 embassy (& probably Putin) first, at the time he was being asked by Ukraine to extend the coverage. Also his reasoning that EM stated is suspiciously similar to how 🇷🇺 tries to convince allied states/citizens not to arm & help Ukraine.
A little more background (like what you provided) would have made the piece more helpful, but a lot of us are appalled at his initial judgment and actions, not at what happened after the fact.
So, this piece reflects the reaction to the latest revelation, its potential impact, and it illustrates the problem encountered with how things were dealt with.

Ben Hodges warned about self-fulfilling prophecies a year ago: not so long ago the stance was “Why help Ukraine as they won’t be able to win.” That’s exactly the reason - you stopped the essential and timely weapon delivery jeopardizing the victory. Now, to win will talks more time, more effort, resources and human lives. Those “on the fence” incapable of fast decisions and determination for victory are the major problem.

Yup, the Ukraine conflict will drive the BRIC's together.
Why is there a void? No one thought a massive communication system in space would have that much power? To include who or what controls that system?
I really hope people see that ANY systems approach, process or technological advancement can and will have a significant impact on society.
Think about the impacts on personal, civic, war, silent conflict or anything humans will do from now until the next millenia will have a significant impact on world affairs and our personal lives.
This is why I feel the need for the U.S. to work on public education reform, appreciate and elevate teachers to a higher standard and excel in the technological advancement. It is a contest. If the U.S. government wants to win and have a say in it politicians need to grow up, really fast.
A lot more to say and do in that vision.

It didn't work then and it's not gonna work know. Teach that fantasy in your own homes but kids need to learn critical thinking skills. Also patriotism has nothing to do with religion. That was proven with traitor trump, let's not have a repeat. He neither loves this country or worships a higher being. It's all about him.

Applebaum is reasoning backwards. That is, because the second drone strike was successful and there was no nuclear attack, then Elon should have known that there should have not been a nuclear attack. Obviously, Musk could not have known that Russia was bluffing. Also, what other system - of satellite communication - was used in the second attack and why wasn’t it used in the first proposed attack?

Not really. Russia's pulled this stunt repeatedly over the years. Same goes with the Kim family in NK - lots of saber rattling anytime their grip on power is perceived to be in danger when what they really want is delivery of weapons, fuel, food, and other distributable resources.

These things are not a result or consequence of US/NATO Ukraine policy. They are more the consequence of US and NATO Russia and Asia policy. Closeness and military cooperation between RU and NK was going to occur regardless of whether RU invaded Ukraine, or whether NATO was weak or strong re Ukraine. Putin has imperialistic tendencies and would ultimately wish hegemonic links with NK.
