john green is exactly the celebrity i'd add to the mailing list if i was in charge of marketing at banana grams
Petition for John to host a Bananagram giveaway as P4A perk.
What on Earth is a Bananagram and what am I supposed to do with it?
+
@lonestarr1490 it's a game similar to Scrabble, but each player gets to use all their tiles to make their own grid. The first player to use all their letters and call out "Bananas!" wins. Its a fun game.
+
@@addier So basically Scrabble without the screwing up of other players' plans?
Did not expect John to say the words "super steamy exvangelical romance" but I'm definitely going to check that out😂
I heard “exvangelical” and was sold but missed the “super steamy” part and now I’m 63% through and 🥵
+
John, saying you love biology and you ARE biology is the closest to self-love we’ve ever heard from you ❤
not true! we also heard that one accidental pep-talk text his apple watch sent
@@SmileyxKyley OH YES thank you for this memory
I cannot recommend Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow highly enough. Everyone who's watching this video is going to love it to pieces. Easily my book of the year.
How's the pacing? Does it creep from day to day? (Sorry 😊)
@@Tim3.14 As far as readability is concerned, the pacing has no issues. There are a decent number of time skips, but aside from chapters that are clearly retelling childhood memories, all the time skips are moving forward, there's no jumping around.
@@ChadEichhorn Thanks, Chad! I appreciate the sincere answer, even if my comment was mostly just a riff on Shakespeare’s Macbeth ("Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day...") 😊
@@Tim3.14 You should also check out All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill, though I have heard it has lighted fools the way to dusty death.
Just got the digital version. The last time I got a book recommendation on here I found a trilogy I loved. It was Hank recommending Jade City last time.
Bananagrams reminds me of Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Redemption, where he writes a letter a week to the state senate for library funds. They finally cave and send them $200. So he starts writing 2 letters a week instead until they give them $500 a year. Be careful John, you may start getting these more often now.
So pleased to see the progress of the PIH project. I’ve donated monthly since I had my baby and I like to think of a twin mother to me somewhere benefiting from your work and our project! Coffee club and sock club for the win!
That is so lovely!
Your comment made me literally tear up! What a lovely thing to do.
I'm right there with you! I talked about the project with my labor and delivery nurse and I so often think about all the mamas in Sierra Leone who deserve safe deliveries too.
Now I'm counting how many I can afford. My entire social life is video games.
I love the time of year when John recommends gifts
the most wonderful time of the year
My suggestion to people for gifts is to offer to do the DIY thing for the person that they've been putting off, if there is such a thing. I've phrased this weird, so I'll give the example from my mum's last birthday where my brother hung up the vacuum cleaner that she and I had been planning to do for over a year. Or last Christmas for mum I fixed a thing with mum's car that I knew how to do that wasn't too hard but has been a big quality of life improvement (was something with the computer bit in the car. I'm no mechanic.) So yeah, do the DIY thing your people are procrastinating on. And hopefully they will do the same for you. Always easier to get off your butt for someone else.
This is a terrific suggestion!
Yes!!!
Bonus points if there is some small thing that also needs be bought for it (ex a light bulb for that one REALLY hard to reach light fixture where that stays out for months if not years) so that there is something for them to unwrap on the day.
I love this idea!
I genuinely love this idea, and will now seek ways to implement it. Thanks! :)
Not going to lie, seeing "Willy" on the art Sarah did for you made me a little bit weepy; but that's my superpower - getting very emotional about other people's pets.
Me too. Fireball Wilson Roberts, always in our hearts ❤
May he rest in peace ❤
++
Same, I had to pause for a bit! I really loved Willy. I have a westie that's just a few years younger, and is now a senior dog. I know his goodbye is coming, so I guess I'm becoming more sensitive to this
I played Willy's Song for my rescue pup when we adopted her in May of this year, and teared up watching Willy do his excellent puppy head tilts. Seeing his little perfect beige circle got me, too.
Can I just say how beautiful that color palette Sarah made you was? Beautifully visually, of course, but also beautiful in how intimate and thoughtful it was. I saw a lot of love evident in it and it seemed very special. Hopefully you got it framed!
"i don't think I liked Biology but now i think now i like biology"
Hank in the background: "I KNEW IT!"

Thanks for being here with us. Happy 4th Quarter Gift Giving season to all who celebrate. -John
Sampson is a cool dude and I'm glad you, a cool dude, also know that he is a cool dude.
Not the books?
I had done some Googling before reading the comments and found the Through2Eyes page and a neat video where WTHR had done some tours with Sampson. It's way too cold outside for me to want to walk around right now but pinning this for when the weather warms up. Thanks!
out of all of my family, I am only giving gifts to my daughter. I don't have the means to give everyone gifts, so we adults are just going to enjoy the company, and our kids' excitement. My kid is 14, and in her dark, and edgy phase, and I thoroughly enjoyed buying presents that fit this aesthetic
You are such a positive and loving parent even while your child is in her dark, edgy phase, made my day!😊
Mantel Pieces is absolutely the BEST title Hilary Mantel could ever give to something she wrote!
John claims it's the worst thing about the book, which must mean the book is INCREDIBLE to top that title.
I don't know if you've done this before, but I just realised that I'd love a video with both of you (or a response video by Hank) listing books you love and telling us why you love them.
You're are sufficiently different from each other that I feel I would gain even more insight into what books to get for the people in my life.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is a book I will be thinking about for the rest of my life. I have been pushing it on all my friends so that they can discuss it with me. It's a book about so many different kinds of love. Also, I would argue it contains a really interesting and nuanced exploration of asexuality. GET THIS BOOK
now this is the comment that has got me to read the book. well done
The title screen for this video is my favorite. John grinning mischeiviously while holding what appears to be a yellowed sock stuffed with who knows what, paired with that title.
I’m sobbing over “space between branches”
Good morning, early risers
I love that Hank's wasn't the first book you recommended.. classic big brother antics
My sister and I live far apart, so we will sometimes play bananagrams over a video call, each using our respective sets. John, if you make them a perk, we could all play one giant game of bananagrams livestream.
I encountered Toni Morrison's writing on a Chipotle cup and was blown away, and then was absolutely shocked to find that she actually WROTE IT FOR THE CUP
That artwork by Sarah is so nice :)
You have quite the talent in recommending books, I paused the video, read a sample, bought corinne and am about 50 pages deep already. Just returned to finish the video now
John always has taste.
When I moved to a new city abroad, where I was supposed to study for three years and knew no one, after finally finding a place to stay after a month of unreliable housing, my new flatmates (whom I did not chose neither did they chose me and who had no say in whether I would be staying with them or not) asked me to join them to the local boardgame pub where we played Bananagrams for two hours. Later bought the game for this shitty student flat. Absolutely excellent game, would recommend.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE giving short story collections! it feels less like giving them an assignment and more like 'hey, try this author out, I like em!' they don't have to sign up for 500pgs, they can decide after 10 and totally have a good feel for the author
Every year I find new books to add to my "things I want for Christmas/birthday/etc" list, to the point where a partner got me a kindle purely because my to-read list was physically larger than my flat.
this is amazing. My to read is also rather obnoxious, but I opted to go the "get it from the library" route.
Willy being in your self-portrait made me cry... I just lost my dog, but it's a little comforting to know he's still with you after all these years. Much love
I once tried to play Bannagrams in Indonesian to help me study, since it has the same alphabet, but it was surprisingly difficult because the frequency of each letter was off. I kept running out of M’s, K’s and P’s. Having multiple sets is actually a great way of solving this problem.
I bloody love Bananagrams and I’m so glad John does too
I love Bananagrams! We up the game by choosing random categories and theming our grams.
I read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow after you recommended it and it was absolutely one of my favorite reads this year!
What do you buy someone who already has enough? You give other people something. What an excellent idea. I'm going to steal that one.
my brother is constantly complaining about not having enough fun socks, so i got to (very happily) get him an awesome socks club subscription!! i’m excited to share such an awesome part of nerdfighteria with him
Thank you John! A homemade crossword for my Mom’s birthday is a wonderful idea! I appreciate the suggestion!
Bananagrams truly is a great game. -A non-celebrity who has purchased two Bananagrams games for my two homes
Thank you so much for recommending the walking tour in Indy. I live on the west side with my fiancé and one of my Christmas gifts this year to her will be a coupon book for date nights. So I will include that in the book! Thanks so much!! PS I secretly hope that one day I’ll be in Indy and I’ll run into you. Would be neat. Have a good holiday season.
I love this channel so much!
John will never not make my day. Also he apparently makes my Christmas lists?
That art piece Sarah made you is just gorgeous and such a good idea and so sweet 😭
These are all such great ideas, thank you John! I've been looking for more good books to read (I *guess* I'll buy some for other people 🤷♀️). Most of all I'd love to get my Pizzamas shirt in time for Christmas. Thank you so much John, for all you've done for me with your books and videos
I'd love if you made more videos talking about books or art. They're always the ones I rewatch again and again
Thank you for reminding me about the Kurzgesagt calendar, just ordered one for my partner!
I went on Samson's Tour at Butter twice. The second time because I wanted to bring all my friends. Highly recommend to anyone in the indy area.
I'm in a very different time zone than usual and getting a vlog brothers before 8 am is awesome! Might have to move!
Oh my goodness the artwork by Sarah is amazing! What a beautiful and thoughtful piece.
Great video.
So many great ideas in such a short video, love it! DIY crossword/wordsearch puzzles are now on my to-make list for my kids! Love Sarah's colour idea too!! I 🥰👍💕
Legitimately getting The Song of the Cell for my mother for Christmas now. Thanks for the recommendation!
I was taking notes every two seconds. Only to find out it's all in the description. Some great present ideas for me and my loved ones! Thanks, John!!
Waoh
YES JOHN IVE BEEN WAITING FOR MORE BOOK RECS THANK YOU
I’ve always loved and appreciated John’s book recommendations, they’re always so good!!
same!
He really does the best recs. Both Somebody's Daughter and Behind the Beautiful Forevers were pivotal for me... And were John recs
Ooooooh I am absolutely going to copy Sarah's color palette of a person idea. I love that SO MUCH.
Sarah's Color Pallet of/for John is beautiful.
I love making gifts! This year my parents are getting an advent calendar (for st. Nicolas day) where they get a photo of our cat every day (except for a few days where we might include photos of our cat who passed away) from me and my brothers this year
I read Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow after hearing Hank and John talk about it on the podcast, and it was amazing!
May I also recommend that if someone you love is in crisis, like having a hard time paying rent or buying groceries that you give them money or something that will otherwise help their material conditions. When I once was struggling to pay for food and heat my apartment someone donated to a cause in my honor and...I could have really used the money from that donation to pay my gas bill to heat my apartment that year.
love when John has an excuse to give book recs- always so good!
I was waiting for John to pull out the "Well, TODAY" with a big grin on his face, but he still pulled through with the big grin :))
Delightful video as always, but also surprisingly helpful. Thank you!
I am currently on my 3rd serving (16 oz) of awesome coffee dark roast (which is wonderful). I am glad single bags are available. I would like to try the new light roast, and I may get some for gifts.
I also loved Zevin's book! Thanks for the other book reqs, I'll have to check them out!
I love the Portrait of John art!!! I may do something similar for some of my gifts.
Same!!
Thank you John, I love this video a lot and you were of great help
John is so heartwarming, I genuinely enjoyed this video so much
Willie!!! On the self portrait brought back memories
I desperately needed this, thank you.
I want to fall in love with an artist and for them to make me art as beautiful and thoughtful as Sarah’s
Just bought The Song of the Cell for my partner who’s starting a degree in biology next year, thanks for the recommendation John!
Just finished reading Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow yesterday and it was (is) amazing. Thank you, John.
How is it that kurzgesagt is one of my favourite CZcams channels and yet I didn't know they sold all these beautiful things. Thanks for showing me, I'm sooo excited!!!
Just finished reading All My Rage, and I agree with John. Incredible!
There are many cool things about you guys and your channel. But the best if you generous ability to share the spotlight, success, audience, love. I’m sure these writers/orgs/companies are gonna thrilled.
the Willy color circle got me in the feels
When I was a kid, my Christmas list was usually a list of desired record albums and books. Now that record albums, in spite of the brouhaha over the “resurgence of vinyl,” are largely a thing of the distant past (and oh, how I miss them!) my list is books. Of recent books I’ve read, the two that I most highly recommend are Edmund de Waal’s amazing memoir ”The Hare With Amber Eyes” and a brilliant collection of essays (see, I like them too) on “restoration and renewal” by Howard Mansfield: ”The Same Ax, Twice.”
Bananagrams is genuinely a great game! My whole family, at different ages, abilities, and speed all enjoy it and there are several different ways to play.
I would LOVE to see some of you and your brothers book recommendations. That's how I first found you channel YEARS ago.
I kinda smiled and geared up a bit when I saw Willy on the color pallet! 🥺
Banagrams is my favorite game! I also think books are the best gifts. I think I'm giving almost every member of my family a book, from board books for my 2 year old niblings to an ebook for my dad, who prefers to read on his Kindle these days
I'm going to read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Thanks for the book recs. I really appreciate it.
Thank you, especially for steering me towards Sarah who I just violently fell in love with and now I will go and watch all art assignments and also give myself the brighttrip as an early present. 🙂
Great recommendations, thank you 💛
tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow great book thanks for the recommendation
Need to remember this tomorrow book.
I read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomrrow because you blurbed the book and I really enjoyed it!
Really wonderful ideas. I’ve now checked out two of your book recommendations!
whoa this was awesome!! thank you so much!!
Just finished tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow because of you and you might have knocked turtles all the way down off my favourite book with your suggestion. It was incredible
Omg that portrait is adorable
Thank you for the recommendations! It's nice to be reminded that there are many options for thoughtful gifts :)
i've been in Indianapolis for a day and it's odd how confused people get when i tell them i'm walking places. like first, i'm a tourist and second the city is flat. i'm used to walking around my hometown with hills, so indy being flat is very convenient. anyway, i've been enjoying the place
I'm so glad you're having a good time!
I loved this video so much for some obvious reasons ❤️❤️❤️
I’m so glad that All My Rage is getting the recognition it deserves! It’s such a wonderful book.
I played bananagrams for the first time this year and love it!
just here to SCREAM about how good tomorrow & tomorrow & tomorrow is AHHHHHH so readable and a masterclass in plotting and themes
All my rage made me sob and it was so beautiful and wow
I read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow on John's recommendation and it was fantastic
Regarding PIH.
As a woman, In Canada, who would not have survived my pregnancy without an emergency C section, I am deeply grateful for John Green and PIH for helping those who do not have access to life saving medical care, like I did.
I have 5 year old twins who were 2 months early and needed a NICU and surgeries to survive. If I was born in Sierra Lionne, we would not be here today. This project excites me.
I am subscribed to awesome socks, I am subscribed to awesome coffee and I donate directly to PIH every month. I buy pizza John merch every year and I also always buy the digital download bundle during P4A. I love you guys and what you do.
Keep doing what you guys are doing!!!
Thank you for being such a devoted member of our community!
I have given Patreon subscriptions and they make wonderful gifts! This year, a lot of people are getting awesome coffee and socks, because of the new single purchase options.
