  • Join us on the streets and shoreline of Stromness for our latest 'Slow Orkney' feature. We know that you can't visit us here in Orkney at the moment, so we're trying to bring the sights and sounds of the islands to you. Hopefully you can take some time to slow down and let your mind wander with this short film, from our home to yours.

My ancestor Thomas Brown was a Stromness lad and mariner who arrived in Australia around the late 1840-early 1850s. It's fascinating to see the village where he grew up 😊

Thank you - I loved watching this film in my flat in Deptford, south east London. Nice to catch a glimpse of George Mackay Brown and one of his best books. The northern light is something else.

Glad you enjoyed it, Andrew. We published a few of these back in the dark days of spring and early summer 2020 as a way of bringing Orkney to folk who wouldn't be able to visit back then. Glad to see it's still bringing a bit of light to folk even now 👍

I was looking at a map of Wales, then started moving north and got to Scotland. Continued my journey snd then the name Stromness just caught my attention. It’s kind of wonderful that I could then go to CZcams and find this great video. Thank you for helping me get out of my house for a while. Cheers from Mexico City all the way to Stromness! Beautiful place!

This fills my heart with some surprisingly deep sense of longing, as well as belonging, though I've never been. I seem to remember the actor Robert Shaw mentioning his childhood years in Stromness. It really is as beautiful as he described.

Thank you. Visited Stromness from Norway last summer. Lovely little town with an instantly recognizable name for Norwegians. Strøm = tidal/current. Nes = headland. And George MacKay Brown is translated to Norwegian. «Sangen om Greenvoe» is strongly recommended.

I love your "Slow Orkney" videos. Please post more of these if you can! We've been to the Orkneys twice and have become addicted. As you can guess, we show withdrawal symptoms right now - it would be around this time of year that we visit Stromness and Papay and many other places. Hope you'll weather the current crisis well.

Thank you. I have connections to Stromness through my ancestors, although I will never get to visit physically you are giving me the opportunity to visit and get the feel of where they lived. The census does not give specific addresses so I will never know exactly where their house was but it's great to envisage them walking along the streets. =-)

Orkney is a different place to us people and it’s kinda dull to be fair 😕

Like many islands I suppose. They show a unique way of living to those who are foreign to them. But if you spend all your life on a single island (or small collection of islands) you will be able to see much of the entire world.

Fair comment, have you lived there all your life? Do many people from Orkney, especially young ones, tend to move down to mainland Scotland, e.g. places like Edinburgh or Glasgow in search of a livelier life or is this not the case?
