In this video, I go exploring the most dangerous mine I've been in, and probably the most dangerous mine at Cerro Gordo. This was not just an exploration, we were searching to see if the 200 level opened to the outside, because there were theories that cold air was coming into the main shaft and freezing the water pipes. The mine itself was completely boarded up, so Johnny and I had to dig in from above through tight squeezes to get into the 200 level of the Union Mine. This shaft was deemed too dangerous years after the deadliest mining disaster in Cerro Gordo's history took the lives of between 8 and 35 miners in the 1870s.
“Cerro Gordo’s deadliest mine disaster struck in the early 1870s when a cave-in killed at least eight and as many as 35 Chinese miners. They were mining in limestone below the 200-foot level and failed to shore up the tunnel with timber, former Cerro Gordo mining foreman Fred Fisher told a Times reporter in 1950. Their bodies were never recovered.”
- LA Times March 12, 1950
THANK YOU!!
I moved to Cerro Gordo in March 2020 because of the pandemic and to relieve our longtime caretaker so he could be back home. I've been here ever since. There have been ups and downs, but I feel I am learning a lot and becoming a better person.
Follow along on this channel for more from the town. I have no plans to leave and will continue making videos to update the progress on all the projects!
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.

If you plan on going to any more places within the mines that were previously sealed off I'd definitely reccomend investing in some respirators (n-95 preferably) just because there could be some potentially hazardous mycelium down there

A metal detector would be great also !!!!

That is neat!

My great grandpa worked on that mine and lost quite a few friends in the incident. He always told my dad that a rival mine company had been trying to sabotage the mine by cutting electricity and destroying the tracks at night. He said he didn’t know for sure if it collapsed due to someone’s malicious actions or if it was an accident. Either way still crazy
Hey Brent, the news paper about the blizzard was from 1886. I paused the video to read it and I did some research. Apparently it was a extatropical cyclone that hit most of the country. That’s pretty cool that you found that man. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
WOW, that amazing I am about to go research it now.

YES. I see there were a few of us feeling it
hahahahaha...Right?! I'm talking to the screen, "WHAT are you doing? WHY? DON'T do that!"
Same. Sitting here scared for their safety even though I know they've lived to tell the tale.
😂 👏🏾 👏🏾. This was quiet engaging.
I learned recently that in the early years of denim, jeans were really expensive and most people couldn't afford them (including miners), so some of the mine bosses who were more affluent would buy them for their workers. The miners would change into jeans at the start of their shift in the mine, then at the end of the shift they'd change back into their own clothes and leave the jeans for the next work crew. It's why stacks of discarded clothing can occasionally be found in older workings.
I'm glad you both made it out safe. It sure was sketchy with all the dynamite and blasting caps scattered everywhere, and the rocks sheering off at the end! Scary.
I think you've made the right choice in sealing off that level for safety reasons, and I think it's also respectful to the miners who are buried there.
It's always an eerie feeling watching someone walking around a mine that people have died in, especially on the same level. When I saw the miners graffiti I did wonder who they were. Do you have records on the miners that died there, and some history about their lives? I think that would be a fitting tribute if that information is still available. (I apologise if you've covered this in a newer video - I haven't caught up with them all yet.
1:45 When I heard 'that's such a tight little space' then "well make it bigger"; alarm bells started going off in my head.
All I could think of was that if you found Levi’s someone would be in them still. 👖👖👖👖👖👖👖😬
That was my thought too like oh look Levi's knowing the history of that level they are probably still occupied ha ha
Double money sell the jeans then sell the bones.
I had the same creepy feeling.
Good point
Me too! I was like great there's a body in it isn't there, fuck
"Don't do this at home." you are the only person i can think of who has an abandoned mine at home.
He so full of s h I t
No abandoned mine but where I lived in England had an entrance to a priest hole from the 1600s because it was made illegal here for Catholics to practice their religion so many old houses and castles from secretly Catholic families built tunnels and hiding places for priests (and themselves) to escape when they were searched by the Anglican authorities. It lead from an old house built in 1500ish to the cemetery half a mile away and we found an entrance into the tunnel that connected with the cave system under our house. It was pretty neat but unfortunately so much had collapsed that we couldn’t get too far.
As you suddenly felt your bed shaking as a sinkhole dropped you into an unmarked.
Long forgotten mine.

I did a lot of caving when I was in my teens and 20s. There's absolutely no way I would climb into that level just to have a look around. Everything is unstable.
I hooked my sister on your videos and she did a little digging - pun intended - on the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper shred found at 7:37. It is from 1933 ! The center piece mentions the actress Marion Davies and how her new movie "Going Hollywood" is in its second week, smashing the box office. That movie was released in December 1933 hence how we can infer that a release date 2 weeks prior to this article means this journal is from late December 1933 or early 1934 !
Thats some solid diggning by your sister!
wait, that means people were in there anywere up to 15 years after being borded up
I just found this out too and came here to comment it :D Bing Cosby is in the film too, you can watch the ending on CZcams :)

yeah, the alfred kenneth hawkins "hijacking slaying" trial referenced before that took place in early 1934.

This video was amazing, I feel a bit sad that all the stuff on that level will never be recovered but maybe it's not that different from what you can find in the other tunnels. It sounds like it was a huge risk to go there in the first place so we're lucky just to be able to watch this!
That was the scariest damn mine caving adventure I have ever seen. I actually got that sphincter-tightening claustrophobia just watching this. Jeez. I'm glad I knew you were already back out when I started watching this. Reminded me a lot of Stephen King's "Desperation" You and Johnny, of all people, should read it. Thanks for an incredible adventure.
The Omega Tunnel up there at Cerro Gordo would be a key one to access. It's right below the road and has eroded shut. If I can remember correctly, it connects up with a lot of the other area mines.
I've been trying! Moving rocks, hand digging, Robert even used 10 sticks of dynamite to try to open the Omega. It's collapsed quite far back.

My Great-great-grandfather and Great-grandfather were lifelong miners in a small coal town in Arkansas. My Grandpa was one of thirteen children that lived in a house that was 30 x 40. That was considered pretty luxurious to the fellow miners. My great-grandfather heard that a photographer was going to be coming to town. He had my Great-grandmother clean off the porch and find the nicest clothes she could for the two of them. My grandpa said that he took absolute pride in that picture and would look at it most nights after coming home.
Back to my Grandpa. The boys in the family were expected to start working in the mine after school around the age of seven. My grandpa despised working in the mine. They were raised to believe that there was only two ways to live. You either mine or you join the Army. My Grandpa decided to do the latter. He became a cook. He ended up meeting my grandma who was in the Army as a baker. They spent 55 years together.
Thank you for sharing. Mining back then must have been horrible. God bless.

Yup. One of the first major things I noticed.
Doing dangerous things is cool, may aswell keep up appearances. 😎
Not gonna lie, I've spent the majority of my caving career in hi-top chucks. Unless we were going in somewhere we knew had streams or a water table, the chucks just always gave me better grip and footing than any boots. I felt I needed the ankle flexibility that the chucks afforded, I lost count of the number of times I almost rolled an ankle in boots.
I was looking at those lmao

Edit: There are actually two different papers being shown. The first is the Arizona Daily Star from January 1934. The second is the Los Angeles Examiner which is also from early 1934. The Marion Davies picture seen at 8:06 is 'Going Hollywood', which came out in 1933 but was still running in early 1934. It actually says 'copyright 1934' at 8:16 if you look really really carefully under the headline 'Milked'. I bet different miners had different papers from Arizona, and L.A, depending on where they were from and what they wanted to know.
How the hell do you even know that? are you 100?
The article with the blizzard says the blizzard was in Japan, island of Utsuyo(?), Jan 29, if that helps. With rescuers coming from Korea.
The newspaper is from January 30, 1934. You can find it if you search Google for the phrase "In Canada, many points recorded lows of 40 below", which appears in the newspaper text from the mine.
@@aussiehighways1130 Yes you are correct, that is one of them. The other is an L.A paper from the same time or perhaps a bit earlier, as it aligns with the release of 'Going Hollywood', a Marion Davies picture seen at 8:06. You can see the date '1934' if you look super carefully under the word 'Milked' at 8:16.
Interesting! Another one of the papers outlines the trade of Tris Speaker from the Boston Red Sox to the Cleveland Indians. That trade happened in 1916, so seems like they kept papers around a while...

Hi Brent, I’ve been up to the mine many times, it’s been a few years. My uncle & aunt owned the store in Keeler, they both passed many years ago but the stories they would tell us were crazy. In all the times we went up there we never ever went into the buildings except the mine you guys are in. It's crazy thinking about just how many complexes of these tunnels will never be touched again/haven't been touched since. Who knows how deep that mine goes, or what you could find, the deeper you go.

watching this in 2022 - so crazy! Glad you're safe. It's ad to think it's just buried history, but I understand the saftey

I came to the comments to see if anyone knew what that was xD
If that particular shaft was abandoned following that collapse, then I would assume that there is still plenty of ore left to be mined there. That said, there are also bodies buried in there, so maybe better leave them in peace.

We need chickens in this town! I put it in the live chat. But hear me out! You can harvest the eggs to eat and they also work as alarms in a good way if there is too much commotion.. not sure about the alarm thing actually but forsure can eat the eggs lol
And he’s so sweet with the other animals I can’t wait to see what he’d name the chickens!!
I actually mentioned that. You get pets that also give back & what Old Western town wouldn't have a few. It would add to the authenticity with very little work. I know there are predators & I've lost a few over the years & I've got many more predators than he will up there. Wolves, Bobcats, coyotes, birds of prey, bear, dogs, fetal cats, snakes, opposums & believe it or not Ravens... the smartest bird in United States goes after the chicks. I let them out and they free range during the day and go back to the coop at night and I just shut the door. They know where to return to. I imagine there are a lot of insects, seeds & even mice they can supplement their diet with. Also they don't need a lot of water expecially when they're not in chicken houses or triple digit temps. The USPS will bring them to your house or call you when they arrive at the nearest post. Good idea. Living things are great for loneliness. We ALL get a bit lonely at times.
If he responds back to this, I will look into buying and sending him some chickens. OR we can crowd fund so he can not only buy some but also have proper housing for the bock bocks and cok a doodle doos
@@DimmestOwl94 I mentioned that too. He actually has everything he really needs already there for a coop & run except good quality wire. I offered to donate $ specifically for that. I have an incubator I could send him but not sure if his electrical is dependable enough. I'm thinking it probably is. An incubator can go a few hours a day without power.
We need to have as many people as we can like a post so it gets his attention. OR multiple people mention it every video until he has no choice but to address it lol

I was less worried about them finding the pants brand and more finding legs still in it.
"The roof is collapsing" - instant panic attack on my couch.
I am enjoying your adventures and thanks for taking us along; however it would be a very cold day before I'd ever to that! Takes my breath away just watching............
You 2 got some mighty big balls there boys. Loving this channel and the caving adventures.
at 11:52 on the wall is written the Greek letters "Alpha Tau Omega", a fraternity that was founded in 1865. So cool to see that some brother was possibly a miner at Cerro Gordo and wrote my fraternity's letters deep in that mine over 100 years ago
Finding pants in a mine leads me to believe a miner had a very close accident and pooped in his pants thus leaving them there in the mine. Newspaper in the mine is a common toilet paper of the time.
How did they deal with the poop and pee smell down there ? 🙆

@@HollywoodGraham wow you are such a wise man
So did there used to be miners walking out of the mines pantless?
@The Modern Stoic Load of information there.
Hats off to you guys. You have alot of guts and a few guardian Angel's on your mine adventures.
Glad you guys got out of the mine safe. Great video
Sad thing about his journey in this ghost town; the day he completely stops uploading, is the day we know he didn't come out of a mine again. Morbid reality. Until someone in his team puts out an update of what happened.
Gotta start taking a team with you each time you explore mines.
That video clitch at 13:54-13:56 creeped me out for a split second. 😅
he just posted something on reddit, he's fine
I dont think hes all alone out there. Different people in his video plus i think that was maybe his teenage daughter in one video. Just guessing
Yeah same
Relax
He has been dumb before.
Even the hotel burning. Like bro. How did you not hire an electrician to inspect the building before you starting renovating the furniture in it.
The amount of anxiety this gave me is unmeasurable
But he was able to upload the video so you know nothing happened lol
Same here
When i was young and curious. I damn nesr couldn't get out of a deep gold mine i couldnt turn around i was stuck! My buddy tied a rope to both of my ankles and rescued me
*immeasurable.
...and my day is ruined.
Insanely fantastic! I stumbled onto you channel, and now I'm hooked and subscribed! This is way better than the opening of Al Capone's vault! Geraldo, eat your heart out! You and Johnny are quite the adventurers! Be safe!
Found this video after some of your later content. Glad you were able to go back ore hunting and make it out once again
As someone who works in the mines every day, be careful digging around like that, we don’t have plumbing under there😂
ikr like i mine in minecraft every day and i thought the same it terrified me
How many hours do you work everyday?
@@aidancanoli you can't even come close to comparing the two my homie.
@@PostalPatriot556 ikr minecraft is so much more terrifying
@@inanimatemist8610 exactlyyy finally someone speaking facts. that moment when you're trapped in gravel makes my heart race every time
Getting swallowed by the earth and dying from panic gotta be one of the worst ways to go. #claustrophobia
no drowning or burning to death is possibly the worst
@@leaveme3559 I think getting eaten by the cookie monster is up there
I'm binging your channel at the moment after discovering it yesterday. Dude, I feel like I've been through a near death experience just watching this video! What you are doing with the town is absolutely fascinating. But damn! That was some sketchy shiz!
You are making me nervous being in these mines. I have idea that has been festering in my head seeing you and off the ranch vids. Actually buying abandoned towns bringing them back to its heyday. So happy to come across your vid that you are doing this with Cerro Gardo. Keep up the good work and be safe.
Please don’t do this at home:
Me at home wondering where a mine could be
Right?! xD
Bitcoin mining, maybe?
There are mines about 2.5-3 hours away from me
@@christianjohnson8642 Go in the other direction, far far away
Brent: Don’t do this at home
Me: well what else am I supposed to do with the abandoned mine in my room?
:)
was thinkin the same thing😂
That's awesome you found a hole another level of the mine ☺️ hope you explore it more
I'm glad you're not going back! Thank you for taking us with you!
