  • You probably recognize Amanda Marshall best for songs like Birmingham, Dark Horse or Everybody's Got A Story. Marshall's music has been inescapable on Canadian radio for more than 20 years. But during that time, she sort of disappeared. Now, she's back with a new album, Heavy Lifting. Marshall tells Tom Power why she's been gone so long, what it was like to have Elton John talk about her music on TV in the early days of her career, and what it's been like to be mixed race in the music industry.

In 1995 I left my abusive marriage and moved to a city where no one knew me. I spent 6 years in a horrible custody battle. Hardest years of my life 😞 I listened to Amanda Marshall through those years. Her music soothed my Soul and eased my weary Heart! I wish I could afford her concert this summer in Winnipeg.
Either way I will still keep listening to her ! Her music is magic ❤ that she’s back!!

Amanda Marshall is such a good artist and her contribution to the 90's Canadian music scene is undeniable. It's unfortunate how "Birmingham" was the only song of hers to break onto the US charts. So awesome to see her again and creating new songs!! Great interview.

We were in the 4th row of the Centennial Auditorium and she came out and absolutely blew us away!! We heard this super powerful voice coming out of this tiny little woman and I instantly said to myself "This woman is a Star already, the rest of the world just doesn't know it yet!!" I bought the CD and played it to death! I have been wondering for the last 20 years what the hell happened to Amanda Marshall?? It is a shame she has not been able to share her amazing talent with the world all this time, but I am sure glad she is back recording and entertaining!! A beautiful Canadian Gem!! I found Amanda's music in a very unusual way: The US professional figure skater Rosalyn Sumners used "Beautiful Goodbye" for one of her most well-known professional programs back in the 90s, and I loved the song immediately and sought out the CD. So I also found her from a song that was not a single. I loved all of Amanda's albums and I'm so happy to see her finally back. I didn't know until today that she has a new album out so I am off to listen to that, and may have to buy the physical CD to go with the first three just for old times' sake 🙂

I interviewed her about a decade ago and it’s still one of my favourites. Such a genuine, kind, thoughtful person.

I grew up listening to this power house of a woman when I was a kid, my mom had her album (i always remember it as the one with the couch* on the front). Her voice was so damn different from anyone else around. Has always stayed with me as a cherished memory. That voice ❤ So excited to know theres more music to discover now! 😁

I love Amanda Marshall and always hoped she would revive her career. My favourite song has always been Believe in You because my eldest son has schizophrenia and he lives such a tough life with it. He often feels so disheartened because he cannot seem to catch the life he dreams of. This song captures my hopes for him.

    Very interesting interview.
I am from Germany andplay in local Bands for many years.
DARK HORSE, LET IT RAIN and FALL FROM GRACE are still in our program with full Band and in my acoustic duo / trio.
Even people who don't know or remember these songs, are often very touched by them.😊

Thank you for a good interview! Amanda took some time off but hasn't lost her talent or her passion for music and I am 100% on board with whatever she wants to do from here.

i fell in love with her doing math homework in 1994 when let it rain played for the first time on tv... and at the end of the song i looked up just in time to miss her name. took a while all i had to go on was the girl with the big voice and big hair. Both are beautiful. ... found her album randomly.. bought everything since. and i JUST NOW.. while watching this video pre ordered the album... that is released tomorrow. Cant wait. Im now in my 40s and still cry for her songs.

Dear Amanda, SO HAPPY YOU ARE BACK! I absolutely LOVE your voice and energy! You were one of my favourite singers in your heyday mostly because of your authenticity and sincere feelings about what you were (and are) singing. Same as the advice given you that "records are business and the stage is soul" you definitely are all SOUL. I am a romantic and I just loved when you would slow down and sit on a stool and sing "Marry me". And also, I have over the years reminded myself, especially in these difficult times, that "Everybody has a story that could break your heart..." Telling stories...You and Bon Jovi...Take care and welcome back...Oh by the way...I think you have a similarity to Rita Coolidge who was also one of my favourite singers. Ciao for now. Linda

That was a great interview, Tom. I've always been a fan of Amanda Marshall's. There's not a lot of true voices that are distinctive and can cut through anymore. Although I'm a little sad to be a Dave now. ;)

At the Duchess of Markham during a David Hines Jam session I recall Amanda in an oversized sweater with sleeves so long her hands weren’t visible. She asked for a ginger ale and appeared younger than the usual clientele. Later she got on stage, my ears were being treated to a soulful voice that “Had It” … I purchased her first two albums which were up to her high standards but like many just wondered if the industry had stolen her passion after not hearing her for far to long. Great to see her and wish her much happiness & success in all pursuits 🇨🇦

This is a really great interview! Amanda was my very first concert back in 1998 in St. John’s at the Delta hotel. My friend and I went without guardians, I was 14, after the show we snuck onto the elevator and up on the room floors and met you in the elevator lobby before you all headed out to George Street. It was such an important impact on my life, crazy. So happy that she is touring again, I hope see her again this summer.

So glad to hear she is back! I saw her, Oh geez I guess I was 15 or 16 and she was one of the artists who played the Ontario leg of Much's Great Canadian Party. I was a pretty hardened headbanger and I had no idea who she was but I was absolutely blown away when she started singing. I remember, a lot of dudes in the crowd were yelling some pretty derogatory garbage at all the female performers that day, but even they shut tf up when she was up there.
She sang Hendrix's Castles Made of Sand and it was so powerful that 30 years later I still remember it - pretty sure Jimi would've tipped his hat to her performance.
Her CD seemed a little out of place wedged between Loverboy and Metallica, lol, but her talent is unbelievable 😊
