Holy cow, roller hockey alive and well. I live near Glens Falls NY and back in 1990s we had the Empire State Cobras who competed in Roller Hockey International (RHI). I really enjoyed the games. Most of the rosters were players who played in the minor leagues during the winter so this kept them in shape for the off season and earned off season money. I liked the product though, good times!

Roller hockey isn’t a bad sport but it gets boring because all you see is people ragging the puck and killing time because there are no blue lines
That's why people need to work on developing roller ringette in Canada and Finland, it has different rules including a shot clock which sorry boys, you can't steal, that's ringette. You already stole the ankle length ringette pants and that's as much as can be reasonably allowed.
Man I miss playing this, used to love skating.
I played from 6 to 16 until I got into a band on a label. I’m 30 now and I’m getting back into it along with teaching my 3 year old son how to play. He’s already skating well and shooting pretty good. I can only imagine how much better than me he will be. Haha

How can I try out or play for a league like this ?
I luvd roller hockey. Im small and fast and used to get huge hitsvthrown on me that no doubt led to undiagnosed concussions (the late 90s concussion protocol: "You just got you bell rung, right? You're ok.") all the time playing ice hockey. I eventually adopted a Michael Peca type of game on the ice and was able to dish big hits out too.
But none of this was ever an issue on wheels...that little half pound puck always zipped for me. At that time anyways most goalies hadnt adapted to wheels and many didnt even where a goalie chassis. You could murder them with low shots all game. Such a faster looser game 4 on 4 especially with no blue lines. I loved it. Quit ice hockey my senior year after seperating both my shoulders in 4 months. Finished high school season and opted out for spring league 2 half of travel season.
I played competitive inline hockey until i was in my mid 20s. I used to love pro beach hockey. They played with a ball and a ramp behind the nets that was inverted at the top in order to shoot the ball back into the offensinve zone. Im not sure they had faceoffs after goals and i think they might have been playing on actual black to, at least the first season...i think. It was an exciting different take on hockey. Me and my buddy wanted so badly to play in that league and in sweden in the winter. He played some d3 college hockey.
Judging by the size of the net, it looks like a 90's style paddle down/inverted 'V' goalie would do well in this league.
I wish roller hockey will be in the Summer Olympics in the future I hope
I use to play when we were younger we went to the UK an played the swedes on Olympic size arena

Are these goals smaller than ice hockey goals (6’x4’)? Or do they just look smaller for some reason?
same size, 6ft 4in regulation net, just that in roller the posts are sometimes oddly thicker.

How do the goalies move? It looks like they’re wearing something similar to regular skates. Is their crease a different material?
They have goalie roller skates just like the ice versions.

@@_KnZed_ That I don't know. This was really the first major roller event that I have been to.
It's kinda weird I grew up playing on Ice in Ontario but moved to PA in the states in my mid teens and played some rollar as it was much more competitive and available in my area vs ice hockey. It's much harder to score in certain ways 1v1 on a goalie than ice because they can track you and dominate motion. For example you almost never tucked 5 hole on a break away id go high glove on the back hand from the left side because they slide slower than on the ice. Similar games with those adjustments.
If you've only played roller you don't need to adjust as much for the "slide of ice." More positioning than anything. It's actually alot of fun. Little boring with possession but if your a good ice defender, I think knowing when to pressure is key.

No roller is just different. A lot of these guys on USA play in the ECHL/SPHL/AHL as well.
There’s no shoulder pads or protective pants in roller, that’s why there is no hitting
Also there is no shoulder pads because it gets super hot as it is & the shoulder pads make it a lot hotter
Ice hockey is expensive dude... especially out here in Southern California. Roller is a cheaper alternative
@@nickcrapsi1480 especially this tournament - there was a heatwave, it was over 40C in the rink - in pre-tournament meeting we added extra breaks for the goalies cause some had passed out during the Junior championships (nice to be able to cool off after the games by walking out of the building and straight into the beach though)

Used to go to games in the 1990s to see RHI (Roller Hockey International) during summer months. Rosters were filled with NCAA D1, ECHL, UHL, and a few NHL capable players. As in any sport regardless of level players who work their butts off are fun to watch. Its the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship, and times with family and friends enjoying the games.
Looks fun. Horrible highlights.
