Fly Fishing BEAR COUNTRY with MACHETE and HOME DEPOT TARP *Catch, Clean and Camp EP 6*

- Picked a spot on Google Maps in a National Forest. No trails, no roads. We hiked 10+ miles following the river. Up and down boulder, hopping from rock to rock and fishing along the way. I only brought a Blue Tarp from Home Depot to sleep under. Tons of red ants, spiders and other bugs came out at night. Wouldn't trade this trip for anything!

Had some serious anxiety few days ago and then I found this channel. Been binge watching these ever since when I get home. Thank you! I love this channel, my new favorite. This calms me down a lot.
Honestly I'm in that exact same situation. Heavy anxiety for days & this channel has helped me so much.
You need to go fishing. That's the cure for your stress. A calmitive if you will.
My boyfriend and I have been binge watching your videos for a few days. We both know NOTHING about fishing but we keep watching. This is so entertaining and interesting!
At 9:30 you did the right thing bud. I know that's a small fish but we don't want to waste anything. That's called being responsible. Thank you for not only being a responsible fisherman but teaching others to fish responsibly.

I can always watch fisherman’s life when I feel like shit and can’t get happy and feel better or at least distracted. I appreciate what you do man.
Marlon Harrington Watching fisherman’s life, Philosophy D & More than Fishing are great distractors. Get out and fish, even if you don’t catch anything, it’s so peaceful and healing man. Wish you the best!
Susan Tomi I completely agree unfortunately the beach is about an hour away from me and gas is always an issue so sometimes this is the best I can do. I think I’m gonna start riding my bike the distance though.
Marlon Harrington omg, how lucky lucky lucky are you?! Only an hour? I bet you COULD bike it! Go for it Marlon, I bet you could do it no problem and it would get easier and easier every time. Do it. I enjoy road trips because it gives me time to think things over, hopefully you can do the same biking it. I can’t wait to hear how it goes for you! ❤️
Susan Tomi Thank you ❤️
Going fishing this weekend in southwest Texas because of these videos. Thanks for your inspiration, I haven't been in years, and I am so excited. Thanks, man.

The thing here is my boi is used to rockfish and lingcods, gotta set the hook. Poor trouts probably died from the shock of just being pulled that hard and hitting the rocks.

31:00. That time lapse of the nighttime was absolutely amazing!!
The thing about trout is they’re pretty fragile compared to lake or ocean fish. My own rule of thumb when it comes to any type of fresh water trout is: never yank when setting the hook to avoid putting too much strain on their mouth/head/body. Also I don’t fight them in; meaning I’d keep slight tension on them and let the trout work its way to me when it’s ready never really pulling, just taking up the slack it’s providing. Once I have the fish close enough I would then net the fish in an actual trout net and keep it in the water to release it. Same as camping, try your best to leave the fish how you found it. The key thing is finesse. Now I’m not saying this to say anything bad. This is just how I generally fish for trout. I feel if I do these steps it really gives them a better chance of surviving after being caught. I mainly do this so it can maybe provide myself and others the opportunity to keep fishing for them in the future. All I’ve said mainly applies to releasable trout, however the ones you decide to keep is up to you.
Thanks for the comment brother! Will be imitating much of your technique
I personally keep the ones that swallow the hook. Or when I'm hungry.
Sorry brother one other thing use your net land Them and the net and take the hook out while they're in the net it's less stress on the fish also. Remember there a gentle fish.
Right? I love this channel but they way he releases fish tilts the hell outta me.

ALL I SAID WAS YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. When I seen this new video. Say hello to the fastest 30 minutes of my life.
Same!
1. There are plenty of areas within National Forests where dispersed camping is prohibited. Also sone NF areas require wilderness permits. Better reach out to the USFS ranger station on the area you are interested in before planning your trip.
2. You guys need to learn how to handle trout. Not just wet hands, but you can't just throw them back in the water if you want them to survive, especially in warm weather.
3. All the fish you caught were wild. You can tell by the fins. Plus they don't stock hatchery fish in those areas.
4. You can keep your fish cool by wrapping it in cloth and keeping it wet. Evaporative cooling. Just dunk it back in water before it dries out and it will stay very cool, especially when not humid.
5. If you want 15 inch + browns from a stream, you should head down river.
6. Nice job considering it's only your 3rd time fly fishing.
VanGrindz know it all
VanGrindz i have a question ., I live in British Columbia Canada all rivers in our Province are single Barb less hooks only , I was surprised to see one of the guys using a Treble barbed hook in this video especially with all the wild Trout in a National park , Is Treble Hooks allowed in all California Streams and rivers ?
Absolutely California has so many hidden regulations tickets/fines could cost 1000 minimum or per fish
Complaining like a lil biiitch
Hey Matt, just a note on your fly selection. The "bee" that you chose is actually a hopper pattern. The ant is a flying ant, note the middle hackle section which imitates the wings. Use those bad boys as a dry fly, the idea is that they are flying around and are blown onto the water. Love your love for the wild, keep it up!
I don’t even fish but I look forward to all your videos.. really made me appreciate nature
I know you wanted a brown on this trip, you gotta get out of the pocket water you are fishing and find longer runs of steady flow, they don't like fast ripping currents and plunge pools like rainbows. you should also look into getting into some cutthroat as i know northern California has a few native species.
Lyndon Watkins nah don’t advise this man to go near cutthroats.
haha his hooksets are a bit much, but i was the same way when i first started it takes some practice ( i practiced on sunfish) before getting it down.
I know I practiced on sunfish aswell and once I got to trout man I was not used to the very subtle hooksets and would rip it out of their mouths now im not bad but back then yeesh
For Browns he should have stuck to the water downstream. That high mountain freestone is rainbow country.
Yo when u fling those tiny trout out of the water like u are almost defiantly killing them (especially when they smack the rock like that). Try to just lift your tip no need to set the hook
"Pretend you have a book between your arm and body" ... prob the best way I've ever heard it explained...you rock man

I know that feeling of checking your back at these rivers, never know whats watching!
So happy you have started fly fishing and enjoying it so much. Those little marks on the baby trout are called Parr marks. Trout have them from birth. They will go away as the fish grows and matures.
After watching this great film. Makes me wanna do a self film of solo hunting n camping!!
i think you now have a pretty good handle on what fly fishing is all about. you may not catch giant fish compared to salt water fishing, but there is something about it that makes me enjoy it more than salt water fishing. maybe its the unbelievable areas of nature where it takes place. there is something about a crystal clear creek, stream or river with the back drop of mountains and rock formations that really suck you into nature. with salt water fishing, it doesnt take long before you catch big fish.....and then it becomes a common occurance. with fly fishing, you are always thinking about the time when you end up hooking a big brookie or brown. one thing you might want to do more is use dry flies with floatant applied......nothing more exciting than seeing a trout break the surface for a dry fly floating down the creek with the current. one thing you need to make sure you do with dry fly fishing is net the current manipulate the fly. and as it does gently take the slack up. you basically want the water to move the fly which gives it a natural movement. the big trout are really leery of unnatural movements of its next dinner. one other thing that is vitally important in hooking a larger fish is for you to try your best to avoid letting the fish see you. the big trout get big for a reason. i have found that the big trout will not bite anything you offer after they have seen you. you can stay low while approaching areas you havent fished yet and another biggie is avoid wearing clothing that is bright. natural colors and/or colors of the surroundings in particular surroundings work well. this may sound unnecessary to cat fish but it isnt. this is vital. sneaking up on pools and staying low and also being quiet. they can hear and they can see. their are followers on here who know exactly what i am talking about. i once fished an area that had 4-5 large rainbows in a small group that wouldnt bite anything. i tried everything. they were used to all the people fishing for them and once the people showed up and were seen, they did not bite anything. even when i showed up and was really sneaky, they wouldnt touch anything. what was wrong was, people had already been in the area prior to me being there so the gig was up. so what i did was i showed up really early in the middle of the week while it was still fairly dark. i snuck up to where they normally were and i didnt see any of them. i didnt let this frustrate me. i took a dry fly and got down low and casted it just up stream of the area that they were normally at and when the fly made its way down the current in the area, it was a frenzy. i missed the fish the first cast due to excitement, but the next cast i was ready. i set the hook and fought the brute for at least 5-10 minutes. when i got him to the net, he was 23 inches and was solid. this method pays off. trout are very smart fish. most weekender fishermen dont catch the big ones because doing things like i described never cross their minds. in this video, i saw you were fishing with a bright white shirt and i wanted to tell you so bad to ditch it and get a more natural color. take care and keep the videos coming. p.s......if you are ever in georgia, email me and i will take you to some backwoods creeks and rivers that have fish you wouldnt think would be there.

Those night sky time lapse shots are AMAZING!
One thing that I use a lot fly fishing rivers is a “reach cast”. This way you mend your line in the air so that you don’t have to disturb your fly on the water. All you have to do is swing your arm upstream a little before your line hits the water. 👍🏼
Whoever shot the drone footage needs a raise

*hi man long time no see how are you ? you still rememer me ?*
Godon Ramsay fc nope
I see you with the intro music from the legendary show "The new fly fisher" 👀
Tip: when trout fishing with dry flies, dry droppers, or nymphs with indicators, try to fish working your way up river. Fish can spook easily if they see you or your shadow and will tend to not bite anything because they are now on the alert. So if you approach them from behind you will have more success, especially for the bigger veteran trout. Cast you fly/flies upriver and strip you line in as your fly/flies drifts back to you. Also, if nymph fishing with an indicator, try using a larger fly with a littler fly trailing behind it.
I don't even like nor enjoy fishing yet I find myself glued to your videos... new subscriber since today, the rest is history loving these catch & cook series!
Try to practice your strip set, so you dont rip the fly off or out of the water every time you get a bite and have to recast or have a wild fly whizzing around to catch a bush or a friend.
Ben Lastname catch a friend, LOL I immediately envisioned that happening 😂😂😂😂
I've heard that you can use foot powder around your tent and ants stay away from it. Used to do that when I was in the field in my Army days, seemed to work okay for me.
"Got one!!!..." WHAM....slingshot the fish headfirst into a rock wall. LOL!! Great video! Fun to watch.

Beautiful little rainbows, slippery rocks, good times.
What a beautiful video. You truly define the real excitement in my favorite sport. Thank you for being one of the most humble fisherman I've seen thus far💯
Just a couple tips here. Fish upstream.. not down. Use dry flies in late summer and fall. Stop over setting the hook and banging up the fish on the rocks. the trout you cault were all Golden Trout. Noticeable difference is in color and the distinct ovals on the side. Otherwise .. good job and and bring a tent. Helpful flies to use .. Olive or white Elk hair caddis any size. You can practice casting using a paper plate in your front yard or park on the grass using paper plates for targets.
Not Golden trout
Craig Marston definitely not golden. Wild rainbows
Those are Golden Trout! I thought I was the only one who noticed! I have caught every type of trout and can verify that these are in fact Golden Trout. Rainbow Trout don't have those large dark circles. California has more Goldens than most states so it is pretty common to catch them. I have no idea why people think these are rainbows
I've caught many, many Rainbows from the high country. Yes, they are Beautiful. Golden trout exist above the tree line. If there are conifer trees around the water, then they are not Golden Trout
Golden trout do not have spots below the lateral line, and smaller rainbow trout have the large spots, called parr marks
I legit, just bought waders to try my hand at fly fishin!!
Happy Fishing!! 🎣

It's an awesome hobby, glad to see new people trying it. Good luck, have a blast!
@@thatcanuck5670 Thank you! If you don't mind me asking, do you have any tips for a newbie?
@@KBuggz lol, about a thousand. If you're looking at first time fly rods though, I'd reccomend a tenkara. It's a japanese style of fly fishing that is a lot easier cause it is an 11-15foot telescopic rod that doesn't have a reel so you don't have to worry about casting or line management. For little trout like he's getting, it's absolutely perfect.
Also when in a creek, don't fish in crazy fast white water. Look for deeper pools, and slacker water. The trout don't want to fight the current constantly, so that's where they'll be.
Was a recommended video, decided to try and watch someone fish and for some odd reason I can’t stop watching the videos. Keep the videos coming and I love how the “little bit of butter” became a thing and it’s hilarious. Awesome content.

Good lord, those fish are dying of whiplash.
Black bears are easy to scare away as long as they are not with their cubs, just make some noise and their some rocks at it. No grizzlies in California to worry about.

Your lucky a gang of bears didn't steal that machete and bear rape you at machete point. Lots of people talk about bear attacks but not many alaskans will tell you about the very serious problem with bear rape because they are afraid of the damage it will do to the tourism industry. You should also keep your kids close because the bears are starting to organize themselves to get involved in human trafficking and large scale drug dealing. The bear problem is much more serious than you would expect.

Great video!
Just like eating walleye.. You want the smaller ones. The big mammas are throw backs. They can put out 200k eggs...
Check your species... what you're catching aren't Rainbow Trout. Look more like Golden Trout.
I've been fly fishing the majority of my life. I have to say your hook set needs a little help. There's no need to rip those fish out of the water. The damage you'll do to them will kill them.
Definitely golden trout.
I agree! Ripping them out of the water, hitting them off rocks, dropping them on the ground. Not very easy on the trout at all!
Dutch Black Talon I thought they were cutthroat
@@cammysco7293 no, definitely not cuts. There are several Golden species that look similar. But they don't resemble Golden or Rainbows.
These are Golden Trout I have argued this before but I can guarantee you that these are golden trout. Rainbow trout don't have the large dark circles.

Love watching you before sleeping. Your vids are so relaxing
If any of those fish you took out of the water were native, they will die. It's very important to not remove the fish from the water, unless you're going to eat them.
You're trying to yank the rod to grab the fishes... stop doing that, thats the reason you keep killing them, its also illegal.
Man I hope you have plenty of potato chips and snacks! Love it very entertaining, I’ve been into fly fishing for about 15 years now and still get massive enjoyment from watching others catch the fly fishing disease, it’s very contagious and as far as I know there is no cure.
