- AMAZON TROUT FISHING CHALLENGE - FLY FISHING EDITION!!
In this video I went onto Amazon and found one of the cheapest fly rod combos I could find, and then went fishing to prove a point: Fly Fishing Doesn't Have to Be Elite!! I spent less than $120 and I got more than enough equipment to catch some beautiful native brook trout.
I made this video to show someone who might be wanting to get into fly fishing an easy way to get started. It is always nice to have the newest and greatest gear. However, having all this expensive gear is not necessary to get out on the water and have a great time! I think sometimes people get so caught up in the gear that they forget the reason that they started fly fishing in the first place.
Thanks for watching!! Don't forget to subscribe, like the video if you enjoyed, and leave a comment!
I’m an old fart that’s been fishing my whole life and I really enjoyed this video. You broke it down really well and spoke some truths (like presentation over fly selection) that don’t get talked about as much as they should. If anybody out there is wondering if they can do it, you proved that they can. Find a little piece of water that you can get familiar with, get the bare minimum of gear that you need, and work on approaching the water and presenting the fly. The fish will eventually take care of the rest. (ps - Please exclude me from the giveaway - I’m set!)
I start with Netangler fishing rod set and it works great too😄
John, I've been watching your videos for about 10 months now. I'm still fairly new to this incredible sport (and art). I learn so much from your videos and appreciate your love and passion for fly fishing. It's contagious. Thanks for your enthusiasm and willingness to share your knowledge!
About three years ago I made a good friend who was obsessed with fly-fishing. He was from Montana where there are tons of lakes all within a very close distance of his house. I wanted to find a nice video to start to learn how to and this was the first one I came across. Thanks for making it.
My dad always fished with his fly pole and he passed away 5 years ago. I regret that I never had him teach me the art. One of those regrets that will last my life time.
Watching your videos brings back days fishing with him. I saw him catch a native Brookie in a lil spring fed run that wasn't 2 foot across at it's widest and no more than 12" at it's deepest spot.
I love to have that fly rod today.
I got into fly fishing on an 45$ Martin kit, a cheap heavy crappy rod with garbage line and a trash reel but it helped me get the basics, even just casting in my driveway was addicting.
Since then I went fishing once this past summer and caught no fish on the fly but plenty with the spinning reel, today I am going to a local stocked pond with my 9’ 5wt Clearwater and a box of self toed flies.
Excellent work showing everyone how really simple fishing the fly is! Your "b" roll really shows the beauty and serenity of the places that fishing takes us. Keep it up. Really enjoy the channel!
I've been loving your videos, I'm always blown away by the quality despite being a relatively small channel. Keep up the great work. I don't have much in the way of good fly fishing where I live but I've been planning a trip to some trout water this spring with some friends who have never fly fished. I'm sufficiently equipped with my own fly fishing gear but I'm trying to come up with some more for my friends so they can have a great first experience and hopefully continue fly fishing. This setup would really help us out so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring. Either way I'm looking forward to your next adventure!
Don’t understand why u felt to share that 💀
@@robertlambert1529bro, u don’t need to say that
Thank you for reminding us that it’s not about what you have, but the love to fish. Love the videos. Keep them coming.
Must agree with you on just being out and enjoying mother nature is a big part of fishing and getting better at the sport.
The first good fly line I purchased as a new fly fisherman blew my mind how a good line could make such a huge positive difference in my fishing. I think any of the cheaper combos are more than fine but they really lack decent line. I’d rather fish a $70 combo with a $100 fly line than a sage esn with a $20 line. Great video and content!!! Thanks.
Your absolutely right, enjoy the outdoors. Catching fish is a bonus. Just started my spring season yesterday. Very nice outing. I've been flyfishing for 38 years, I don't need the outfit Your giving away, so give it to a new flyfisherman, and thanks so much for your generosity. Enjoyed the video. 👍
You make fly fishing look SO easy! Lol I watched these CZcams guys showing all these fancy casts I went and stayed hung up in the tree's! Lol you have your own casting style and it works, I gave up and went back to tenkara fishing, I still want you to try it! You can get a perfect drift by keeping the line out of the water!
Great video as always!! Your channel got me in to small stream fly fishing. There’s something about the discovery of finding these little streams independently and trying to complete the puzzle of finding the fish and what they’re eating. Even though they might not be the biggest fish they’re definitely the prettiest! Thanks for all the hard work you put in to make these videos!
Well done! You’re doing an excellent job not only introducing new anglers to fly fishing, but also providing them with valuable pointers on casting and fish handling. Keep up the great work!
I really appreciate the the positive view of fly fishing and specifically the emphasis on the visual beauty of the species caught and the details on the Brook Trout is spectacular, please keep it👍
Thanks for this. I’ve been watching your videos like crazy lately and I really love the way you put them together. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Another awesome video, you need to get Andrew out of Florida and back on the creek with you! Thanks so much for the chance to win!
Great video. I'm just starting to fly fish and it gives you the interest to keep at it. I've bait fished for brook trout all my life and you really nailed it when you talked about the adventure being what's most important. Keep making videos!
I really enjoy your videos. You have helped me a lot with my transition into fly fishing and how to fish my local creeks more effectively.
you make it look so easy, but you’re right, it comes with practice and time on the water. another great video, brother! Looking forward to trying my hand at fly fishing for trout this year.
Love watching your videos, very informative and able to learn alot about what I've been doing wrong as far as techniques! So thanks for that! 👍
Me and my son love your videos. Nothing more beautiful than wild trout. Great work, can't wait to see more!
I'd honestly argue spin fishing can cost more than fly fishing long term. Costs me $10 for a single Rapala that I'll more than likely lose at least 3 if I'm fishing them correctly in any given day.
Great content man, perfect way of showing how to keep it simple and cheap, while showing them how.
You've definitely have inspired me to try and fly fish my local trophy trout streams here in NY, I've had success with the spinning rod, but can't wait until I can try something new! Thanks for the influence man, and keep the great videos coming!
Thanks for making this video, I’ve been wanting to get into fly fishing and you really helped me break down the basics.
Thanks for making these videos and promoting practices for our streams and fish to keep them healthy
I really enjoy watching you guys and the places you fish. That’s a cool combo!
I learned a lot. Great information and I love your point at the end- be in the moment and enjoy the experience.
Sweet video as always! I've always wanted to get out there and fly fish, but nervous about the cost of supplies. Thanks for alleviating some of the financial burden!
I’ve been trying out fly fishing for a couple of days and I have been enjoying it. I would love to try out the new hobby, because I’ve been using a spinning combo almost my entire life. I would also love to get my family in to it as well, so I’ll have to show them this video! Thanks for the awesome video!
Great video. And great job explaining and showing that you don’t have to be rich to get started in fly fishing. Seems like a great starter kit to get involved in the sport.
Wow Hardman! That was a great video and you are an incredible teacher. What you said at the end is so true. Just to be out in the beauty of it all is great fish or no fish.
Another great 👍 video. Thank you for always showing all levels of fly 🪰 fishermen how it can be done.
Always love your videos! Great action and love seeing the wild Brookies! Keep em tight!
Great video. I keep telling myself I'm going to learn to fly fish but get intimidated by the large amount of different flies. The advice you gave about the presentation more than patterns was a big help, maybe this year I'll actually do it.
Man super cool to see how easy it can be to get started. Can't wait to see more videos as the temps start to warm up!
The idea of your give away challenges is awesome. Great motivation for people wanting to get into the sport.
It’s fun watching you work the creek. I’ve been watching a bunch of your stuff learning. I caught my first brookie in the fly last summer and this year I’ve decided I’m leaving all my spinning gear at home and only fly fishing.
I'm starting a program in my area to teach fly fishing to visitors of our area. I'm loving your videos to help understand and communicate fly fishing better. Thank you for the quality content!
Always enjoy your videos Jonathan. Thanks for the tips!
Back to fly fishing after 50 year absent, good reference to a lot of things l forgot. Thanks for video, looking forward to more.😊🙏
I like your content, you have a great attitude and take your time with the trout! Thank you for explaining fly Fishing!
Great video love how you broke down everything very easy to follow and understand. I was introduced to fly fishing by my father in the Everglades a few years ago and I love it.
Just started watching your videos not too long ago because I was interested in starting to fly fish. This video helped me learn some ver valuable things and gets me excited to get my own rod to start.
I do recommend the Gary Borger books. Especially reading the water, the ecology and general topics of how rivers flow and where fish stage to feed by size, helped me tremendously !
Thank you for the fly fishing introduction! I've signed up for a tie flying class just to get into this sport. Now I have to head over to the Walmart challenge.
Love the videos man! Always make me excited to get out go fishing!
Your videos never disappoint, been learning a lot from them and keep up the good work!
Great video.Nice scenery and gorgeous natives...
Another great video. I enjoy each one. Very relatable. Thanks.
lovin the videos man, they've definitely made me wanna start getting into fly fishing a lot more
Perfect video! I am going fly fishing for the first time this weekend! Watching this video has me even more excited. Keep up the great work!
I look forward to seeing all your videos. Great stuff.
A lot of great content here. I enjoy watching and learning new things that you presented here. Tight lines!
Always a learning experience and beautiful stream hydraulics and the wild trout are awesome!
You guys are awesome, love your adventures....I have never fly fished before but will be trying soon, I watch your videos everyday at lunch....thanks....👍
Thank you. Great job. Beautiful fish.
Awesome video! I know next to nothing about fly fishing, but this was a great source to see what fly fishing is like. Very calming video, too
This was such a helpful video! Makes me more confident to go out and try fly fishing using the not crazy expensive gear to start. I've been getting into Tenkara, but the lack of reach that it has makes me want to get into wester fly fishing. With the package you suggest it is definitely doable. Thanks again!
I’ve learned so much about fly fishing watching your videos. Keep the videos going
Fun video I always enjoy how excited you get catching those native fish
really enjoyed this, learned a ton from it. I've just recently decided to soak as much knowledge around fly fishing brooks and rivers, this is about the tenth of your videos ive watched, awesome work looks like some amazing spots! I'm using a unknown weight rod, and a reel older than me, with a super glued clicker and still having a blast, getting a rush from catching fish on the fly. the wet fly dry fly combo, so simple but so big brained. i have no choice but to steal that technique
Glad to see the Amazon stuff works. I have one coming for my first time fly fishing this weekend. 🤞🏼
Great video. Really like the how to videos, helps us all young and old like myself. Thanks.
Great video, thanks for the pointers. New to trout fishing and trying to get out more. Never used a fly rod, but it looks like fun. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
When you caught that brookie!! wow!
I enjoy your videos. Thank you for reviewing this combo I have no fly shops near me and I've been wondering about these wild water packages
Great video. It was really cool that you used the flies that came with the kit too. This a good lesson that presentation beats most things.
I've been fly fishing for almost a year now and ur videos have been really help full and all your tricks and tipschave been helpful
I'm new to fly fishing and you nailed it on the head when you said there is no other way to fish. Excellent videos 👍
Fly fishing sound so fun I can’t wait to learn!
Amazing video love you’re content you’re fishing tips are very help full just starting fly fishing
This was extremely helpful. Thank you and keep up the good work!
That is a great video you made. Thanks for showing us how to fly fish a small creek ..
I like how you explain how and why to use and do what you do. Yes I'm new to fly fishing. I've rolled 1 and I'm hooked. Like you said it's an addiction. Yep I'm hooked !! Thank you!!
Great video man. Beautiful lil creek to spend the day swinging on.
Lovin the vids just got into fly fishing this year and I love it
Great informative video, I have just gotten back into fly fishing and could use this rod/reel setup. Thanks again.
You got me hooked on fly fishing about 2 months age. Even though we don’t have trout, I have busted some bream and bass. I hike often and my fly gear is with my backpack. Great video. Keep it up I really enjoy watching.
Very pretty stream. The natives are so beautiful. I love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Your videos are next level. Really enjoying watching them because you make quality videos.
Wild water was my first set up! Great beginner level stuff. Really professional looking flies as well
Love your closing comment about getting away from the craziness of the world! Cool video! I am kicking around getting into fly fishing.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
yes, new to fly fishing about 5 yrs. started with a 13 ft. Tenkara. Have a 9 1/2 ft. 5wt. Need some thing smaller for the small streams. Love the video!!
You do a great job and enjoy fishing . Keep fishing.
love the videos! I am super interested in fly fishing! I have a bunch of my great uncle's flies that he used to tie. but no rod to try them with. Been wanting to get into fly fishing and your videos have helped to show that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to get into it. Keep up the videos! very entertaining!
Love it! My first and still my only fly rod was the wild fly 5’6”. I’ve only caught 4 trout on it so far but a ton of bluegill and small bass.
This was the first fly rod I bought when I first started 6-7 years ago, I still use it as my backup fly rod and always bring it with me incase a friend of mine wants to learn
Great video. Really enjoyed the tips and techniques. Thanks.
First time viewer. Love the action you had. What a great time.
You whacked em. Nicely done! Hopefully some people are inspired to get out there and do it themselves too. Tight lines!
That whole video was just informatively cool 😎. Kudos Jon. Always, tight lines. Tony
I’ve been following you for a while & love your videos! Been preparing to make the transition from spinning gear to fly gear! This would be perfect for me start with in the mountains of SWVA I call home!
You caught fish with your reasonably priced Amazon set up! Point made. Personally, I purchase and use Redington gear which is of high quality for the money. Thanks for this and your other videos.
Nice video, appreciate the tips! I’m new to fly fishing looking to get my first rod and reel 💯
This was a great intro video from start to finish. From the initial set up , how to properly handle fish to be released, to reading the water, and showing that you don't need an equipment layout of thousands to get into fish. That first brookie you had looked like it had some beautiful coloration in the brief glimpse of it we got. You also do a great job of promoting the sport. Your ending statement about counting your blessings and enjoy that you can be out there, whether you catch a fish or not, was spot on. Thanks for the opportunity to win this outfit as well. Take care and God bless. 👊🏼🇺🇸
P.S. No offense, but I'll take100, or more, of these beautiful fish over that orange fish you had in the last video any day of the week. 😉
Great video thank you. All my rods/reels are from Amazon. Some fly lines and all terminal tackle except flies. You are correct! You don’t have to spend a lot of money.
Really cool video on breaking down how to fish a creek!!
Great intro to fly fishing video, not expensive as you may think, thanks for sharing.
Love the vids keep up the great work! Love how you spend your time and money to try to get a new fisher man or women into the sport!
