Meet The Woman Who Wears Fursuits Everyday | My Strange Addiction
College student Lauren is a furry. Everyday she wears a fursuit she sowed together herself. Her 'fursona' is an outgoing, social fox character that she feels reflects the more extroverted side of her personality.

Sheâs more confident in the suit because people canât see her. She knows if they are laughing at her while sheâs in the suit that they are laughing at the suit and not the features sheâs insecure about.
Time to get a furry suit
I get that. Iâm super anxious in public normally, but fine in cosplay or alternative fashion because I know WHY people are staring/pointing, and I donât go into the spiral of âtheyâre staring at me. Why are they staring? Do I look weird? Is there something on my face? Did I do something wrong? Theyâre talking. Are they talking about me? Theyâre talking about me. I look weird. I did something weird.â etc. etc. Iâm even less anxious now with my service dog even though we get even more people staring/talking about us, bc when Iâm out with him and notice people staring/pointing/whispering, I know that theyâre staring at him and not me. If you KNOW why people are staring at you, thereâs no room for the anxiety to fester and you donât go into obsessing over why. Ngl, I think the only problem here is that she canât leave the house without the fursuit bc of her anxiety. She seems sweet and genuinely talented, itâs just sad that her anxiety ever got to that level. :( Thereâs a difference between healthy confidence and self expression like âI donât want to change out of my cosplay just to go to lunch when weâre going back to the con right after, so Iâm just going to stay in it for the restaurant and screw what anyone else thinksâ or âI like lolita fashion, and wearing it even just for normal things like runs to the grocery store or going out to eat makes me feel confidentâ and unhealthy coping mechanisms like âI wear this extravagant thing all the time and canât leave my house without it because the thought of people seeing me without it on and being able to see/judge me as a person instead of the costume/persona/clothes I put on terrifies me too muchâ. I really hope sheâs gotten some help since this was made and was able to turn her talent into a more healthy hobby than a coping mechanism gone wrong.
Exactly
Im am furry man
@@peachy4358 right. Thatâs what I feel like when I do my hair up in double buns or wear an obnoxious colour. I know thatâs why people are looking or whisper. It keeps the anxiety looked out.
After this episode aired, it was revealed by the girl that TLC had her sign a waver saying she had to exaggerate how much she actually wore her suit. That she really doesn't go out in Kira as often as the show made it seem.
That would suck
So she was more like a normal person with a weird kink like this? Who just more so kept it to themselves and a handful of others... rather then trotting around town in full blown movie set costumes đ€Łđ
@@remy5536 oh. Well then, learned something today I guess. Still I didnât think it was something all that weird... like itâs fairly common and not really harmful ya know?
@@remy5536 yeah I thought it was a little strange that this was on strange addictions, cause being a furry isnt an addiction its more like a creative outlet like you said.
Yeah, I was thinking, the only time ive been around fursuites is when it's at fur cons or local meets, like with other interests but having local meets more often for the socail side.
I actually spoke with her before. She stated that TLC really played her to be weirder than she actually was and took audio from when they weren't supposed to be recording and spliced it together to create conversations that never actually happened.
I wish she would have sued but I'm sure there's fine print preventing it :(
@@AndroidPuka Its like that for every reality TV show though. They need things to be engaging for the audience so reworking soundclips let them shorten conversations or set up things to be more dramatic.
@@kelushan wait Iâm kinda curious abt this, which parts are examples of convos/parts that didnât actually happen??
@@probablynot2123 Its been a while since I spoke with her but iirc they made it out to seem like she only felt comfortable leaving the house in a fursuit which wasn't the case. Yeah thats messed up
The thing is she could made some mad money selling those suits. Them things are expensive I seen

I'm related to her it's my mom's cousin đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
I kinda admire that she's turning her interest into practical experience like: character design, costume creation, engineering (the mobile jaw hinge), sewing. Sure fursuits are cringe, but they still take effort to make
Oh hell yeah, I agree. I have many friends who make fursuits for a living. You can make B A N K off of that.
Also I love how is 20/20 this is the most normal see the people are a tone to now
I think fursuits are pretty cool. I've seen quite impressive and cute fursuits, some of the creators are mad skillful. Art is art : )
Thereâs a generally accepted place for them at sporting events
I say cringe because unique designs are an exception and not a rule, as well as the fact most people (even many furries) assume fursuiting is synonymous with the whole of the fandom.
In the video the mom said the daughters personality drastically went from outgoing and social to an introvert when she was.a small child and her dad died. Sometimes our child mind adopts ideas that are meant to protect us after trauma, but long term can cause problems and are hard to fix as adults. She lost a loved one and now cannot meet and be her true self with anyone new. She craves socializing, but its uncomfortable for her to be vulnerable so she focuses on things that comfort her and puts her energy into that. Hoping one day she can heal her wounds and won't need to have persona to connect wit others.
*tears up*
*shakes fist*
goddang furries! ; - ;
I agree with you...
I really hope that she will be more open about herself one day and not hoping her fursona to take all the credits in her life.
I'm the same. I was way more outgoing as a kid then trauma hit hard and I became extremely shy and introverted. Over time I've managed to slowly become more confident and socialize with people and make friends and go out. It's been great.
At least her coping mechanism/hobby is quite harmless. But I'm also worried how she will do without her fursona.
@@kitcat2449 Yes true that.

Those fur suits aren't cheap at all. Some of the high end ones go for thousands easily. If she was smart she should just start doing commissions if she really loves making them.
@@arket-7160 with practice she could start taking commissions
"As a mom it worries me that my daughter is HOME!" well Karen, she's not out doing drugs. Calm down
I mean true. She could be screwing cars or balloons or doing drugs but this is pretty tame out of every other video.
I can guarantee she'd be throwing a fit if her daughter went to parties or stayed out at dairy queen too late
I mean the fact that her daughter canât socialize without put on a costume and using a fake persona is cause for concern
@@bmoore1908 yes, but considering all the other videos that My Strange Addiction has put out. Her overdoing her hobby as a coping mechanism is relatively tame to eating drywall or getting sexual pleasure from balloons.
But also she came out afterwards and stated that they asked her to wear her suit more often than she usually would. Which makes sense since it can be dangerous to wear these suits too often and most suiters know this. Easy way to get heat stroke wearing something that can get to 100°F.
@@whoahanant comparing it to things that are worse, doesnt make it better
Ok, you are free to call me out, but I think Furries are similar to Drag queens. Both are talented in craftmanship (makeup and suits) and they have an alternate persona that makes them comfortable in their own skin. Not to mention, they both want to have fun.

This is actually a pretty tame "addiction" compared to most of the stuff this show features. She only wants to wear a costume that helps her express herself. Sure, it's a quirk for her to wear it so much, but like she's not hurting anyone lol
Also, it clearly helps her, so I'm not sure why this is even an episode LMAO

Lolita is fashion culture not a culture of it's own that is revolved around something abstract like anthro animals
I remember that, the show kept trying to call them "living dolls". Lolita is already a pretty bad term but living dolls is probably worse, lmao.
It shows people with different fashion sense as crazy people,I could probably find one of them shaming a alt person

Mom wouldn't have a problem if Lauren was constantly sewing "normal" clothes, reading, writing, playing music... let her enjoy things, mom.

Not to mention, ive only met a few furries online, from some different interest groups, and they've always been some of the sweetest people. Almost always super nice and willing to help someone out if they can.
Girl: has a hobby that relaxes her and brings her comfort and harms no one not even herself

I don't think it's because she's into it that they're saying she's addicted. I think they're calling her an addict because she spends so much time on just the one thing that its having a negative impact on her life in some form.
Thats some facts Tyler
I don't agree. It does hurt her. It's putting her in a false sense of security, which she struggles with without the suit. She will always be dependant on the suit to appease all her weaknesses, and in that it is very destructive behaviour. The day she realises she can't do anything without the suit will be too late to work on her personal issues. Because in the end that's all the furry fandom is. Unhappy people who cannot face their problems, choosing to hide themselves, as if the problems would magically disappear.

I can see why she adopted it. Itâs armor for her. Inside she can hide anything she is nervous about (her vulnerabilities) and let her friendly/ confident side show on the outside. She obviously wants to make people smile but she is scared and self conscious to put herself out there. I have known many people who found their confidence through cosplay. The choice of costume doesnât really matter if it makes you feel happy and letâs you relate to people in a healthy way. She may in time find she doesnât need it to deal with people.
Well said
Dude She admited to fake IT for the show ...
Yeah, I can relate a bit. I do a lot of voices and have some social anxiety, but I do different voices a little bit In public rather than my own to kinda "mask" my self or create a shield. I know it sounds backwards, but I'm l a little less shy if I can do a voice and entertain someone, then I can get to know them a little more as they'll sometimes open up after having having laugh. I hope to get into voice acting some day! I follow and look up to many of the great and classic voice actors for cartoons and games and such! đđđ»

Her life is worthless she is a furry
I especially hate all the wording they use to describe it, talking about it as an illness, and I get that the show is called "my strange addiction" but I can't for the life of me see how being into furries is an "addiction". It's a hobby, or an interest, at most, and even the extreme parts of the community (which this girl is far removed from) are just people who heavily fetishize it, but even that is in no way a problem if kept within their own community and not forced upon others. Yet the people on the show are talking about her mild interest in furries as if it's a drug addiction, and like it's dangerous or some shit. If we are all being honest here. She's not just "doing this for her happiness" shes actually running away from her dads death. She didnt deal with it growing up so the outlet is this. The fact that people are defending it is fine, but they aren't taking into account the childhood trauma. The therapist is targeting the wrong issue. Which isn't her "addiction", its the trauma causing her to hide in this.
I feel very similarly, but not because of trauma. but because of social awkwardness. I prefer wearing masks or heavy makeup to play a character when I'm interacting with people outside of my friend group. Being in parades in costume is a great way to get exercise too. But in public, without other people around, that's not something that most of us do. For me and many others, it's something fun for weekends maybe a couple times a year, not an every day or going out in public randomly kind of thing.
Laughing or smiling while talking about something sad or negative is a defence mechanism. I do this all the time. I got to therapy but I start laughing every time Iâm talking about trauma (laughing unwillingly and uncontrollably)
People making fun of you for something you control (like wearing a fursuit) is easier for some people to handle (especially in a fursuit where their face is hidden) than people disapproving and making fun of things you can't control (like your looks). Masks also offer a level of anonymity which means its easier to act differently/stupid/out there
It makes her happy and comfortable that's all that matters. Everyone deals with depression in a different way

I will never understand why people have a problem with other people looking weird in public. Like who cares what other people wear in public?! How does it effect you in any way? I think itâs weird for people to want to look boring and just like everyone else.
If it doesnât hurt anyone who cares!
aint that the same issue though? now your annoyed and judge people who just wanna be normal.
The second part of your comment made 0 sense
@@charliehofmann3524 why?? I think itâs weird for people to want everyone to look the same, if it doesnât hurt anyone then who cares, ultimately it doesnât matter if people look different or the same. I donât understand people who are insistent on everyone following the norm and have to go out of their way to be mean and rude to people who want to look different. What doesnât make sense?
This doesn't come off as an addiction. Being a furry isn't a bad thing, really. To my knowledge, fursuits take a long time to complete. It's something people enjoy in life, and it doesn't usually hurt other people. I think this girl isn't addicted when it's something that's part of her life. She's not hurting the people around her, nor is she forcing people to be a furry. I have a friend that works on clothes and his own fursuit. It's interesting to see what he's working on. Furries aren't mentally ill, not hiding from anything, and they chose to do this for themselves. The girl in the video is right, it is something that brings great joy to that community, and they're not harmful in the slightest. Most furries are super nice people, and you wouldn't guess they are. There's something about the art they make that has a beauty to it, and it's always interesting to see what they come up with. They're creative people with something in their lives they love, and there's nothing bad about that. She's healthy with her life choices here, so I think she should just be her. Whether she wears the fursuit all the time, or just for filming, I'm not sure, but if she's happy and not being forceful of other people to also be furries, there's nothing she's done incorrectly. Just my two cents.
Yeah but deodorant is a thing
Thanks for defending us, this is really well explained and i hope the furry "haters" that read this can understand the truth over us
yeah about the art. yesterday i saw this artist's art about friendship. what it really was is how popular people only want popular friends and this furry in the art had fewish followers he was sad then 2 furries hugged him, it was just so cute and heart warming. lot of the art is so cute
None of the other addictions hurt anyone either that is not the definition of an addiction. A behavioral addiction is an inability to stop partaking in specific activities. Most people can live and function normally even without being able to do a certain hobby if you canât then you may have an addiction to it.
@Crystal Method nudists arent hurting anybody, neither are alcoholics (that dont drive),thiefs, or verbal abusers. None of these physicaly hirt anybody
I love how honest Ken is itâs great
Most Furries I've met are very, very friendly, nice and respectful so I honestly have no problem with them at all.
so was ted bundy? dont support people who sexualise living animals who cant consent to being sexualised its SICK. they need help. if they look at a fox or a dog and go wow i want to be that thats an issue in itself but the fact the community is so sexual with it is so disturbing and awful.... you should have a problem with it.
@@RinaRemi Ex furry here. They donât really sexualise living animals. Some âanimalsâ are mythical creatures theyâd create themselves and are more on the âhumaneâ side. Especially anthropomorphic characters. Iâm very Safe-for-Work when it comes to drawing personas. Not every furry are sexual and not all furries are âzoophiles.â
Fur suit makers can make a lot of Money selling custom fursuits
Dude, furries pay the best most times. Even for art.
Do anything furry related and you can make a lots of money, because furries buy merch. That's why furry youtubers on avrage makes more money on their patreon accounts per youtube subscriber. i lay down 3-4k every year in furry stuff and i'm a student

"Is that a bathroom selfie?"
I wouldnt blame her, all of my selfies are taken in the bathroom, it's the brightest room in the house and has a window to let in even more light.
Also, I would like to say that I am very understanding of how she feels comfortable wearing it out and about even as an introvert. I'm also an introvert, I love costumes, horror, fantasy, etc. And in these costumes I feel hidden and therefore I feel free. And so I can really understand how she feels.
i honestly can relate to this i used to go out in cosplay wigs all the time because people always said my natural hair was gross i ended up dying it but even then i would wear wigs a lot i wore them to school and honestly it was great because now iâve built a tolerance to wearing wigs i can go a full 12+ hours wearing a wig
As a furry I find this funny because all of these reactions are the first reactions I had to furry things and also it's just down right funny
For real đ
not a furry, but if I had a fox suit to wear around all the time - you bet I'd be wearing it every day.
7:00 Editor got fired when all he did was flip the picture and didn't even delete the 'file footage'
I can officially say that this made me laugh despite how many jabs were taken at Furrys lol. Also itâs odd that her mom and the therapist wanted her to stop when people who make fursuits can actually be commissioned to make one if asked and get nearly a thousand based on what the fursuit looks like.
I mean I feel like the reason she would feel more comfortable wearing it in public situations is because no one knows who she is so it's like the anonymity of it makes her feel more comfortable
I just want Buff to look at me and say âNiiiice.â đ©đ

Iâm not going to lie, but this looks like a lot of fun! I would love to go back to my midwestern farm town and go to the local golf course and play a round in a crazy furry suit.
dunno about you guys, but im pressing x on being addicted to wearing a hot carpet that provides low visibility and dexterity.
fun fact: on a trip to baltimore inner harbor a few years ago, i accidentally stumbled upon bronycon 2018
I went to equestria la and my mom was more excited seeing the furries than me
@@Heartsongforte LMAODHFHBDBS
I myself have never worn a "fursuit". However I can understand why some people feel more comfortable wearing them. I don't like how I look and I usually hide it. I express myself with things I like. like I don't do furry stuff or anything but it can sometimes feel better to feel as if you're not in your own skin.
Boys support boys
But the logic is the blanket stops the monsters from getting you. If you can't really see them, then they can't see you. A fursuit is a mask and you can take on a new persona rather than your own. It provides an outlet to do those things because you can distance the character from yourself
In my opinion, furries can do whatever they want I honestly donât care what people do with their lives as long as they are not hurting others.
exactly
also some people have to learn that furries are a fandom of many branches and types and that they cant all be grouped together into one thing yet alot of people who have never been in the community hate on the fandom for thinking that the small toxic part of the fandom is the entire fandom which sucks
@@SamiTheAnxiousBean yes
There is 1 Furry among us...
Buff is sus.
im that one furry
If a furry randomly approached me Iâd start running and screaming for someone to call the cops
By the metric they used for her Iâm âaddictedâ to playing guitar (poorly)
Iâm not a furry (Yea very convincing I know) but imma give my opinion on this (I know, no one asked, I donât care). I think that this is just a hobby thatâs just a bit âexoticâ , some people do it more than others but in the end, if it doesnât hurt anyone or if it isnât anything illegal then itâs fine. It may or may not help people show parts of themselves that are hard for them to show.
Yes, it is just an exotic hobby.
Also most people donât see the more skilled and creative side of the fandom, because most people only ever see the first suit of a less experienced individual.
Im glad we have people that isnt furries that do defend us
The problem isn't within the fact that she's a furry, but in the fact that she can't leave her house without hiding behind a mask. She clearly has some psychological issues that should not be ignored.
I don't knos why people think that being a furry itself was considered her strange addiction while it was her inability to show her face to the people.
@@budgetbajur I agree with your statement and I shouldâve mentioned that in my original reply (Iâm too tired to edit it now h)
I can understand the anonymity that she describes. Yes it's very noticeable, but no one will really know it's her (besides loved ones). It's like... With covid and masks, I kinda like wearing the masks cuz then if I really just look like shit at the grocery store, they don't know who I am lmao, but yeah I don't know, just makes it easier for me as someone with bad anxiety haha. She should make it into a business and sell em! To be able to live off of something you really like is pretty awesome.
Edit: I know she doesn't participate in the sexualized part... But I sincerely don't understand the people that do đ I mean, you do you butđ maybe I'm being too harsh, idk
AND I relate, when someone named a Pokemon from a different gen, I most likely might not knowđ
That mask part is way too relatable haha. I don't wear make up (too pricey and I'm lazy + don't like having stuff on my face) so my acne is pretty prominent. It has got better with age but it's still there. I feel much comfortable with a mask so I can cover it and only the best part of my face (eyes !) is showing lol. Helps social anxiety too, it somehow makes you feel safe.
Kitcat fo sho fo sho no doubt no doubt haha
I don't understand the hate for furrys. Truthfully it's not my type of thing, but I have a friend who enjoys this and I don't mind at all. They're not hurting anyone, they're just enjoying something they like, and they don't push it on other people either. Really I think her cousin is just insecure to be seen with her. About what people will think of him, when he isn't even the one wearing it. Just let her be. Don't belittle someone for something that makes them happy and feel more confident.
a heterosexual furry is gayer than a normal person who happens to be homosexual
*source: my best friend and brother who is gay has confirmed this multiple times over the years as have many others* (and it's just along the lines of common sense)
