  • This past year has revolutionised the way many of us work. The coronavirus pandemic has exponentially increased "working from home", but many digital nomads are now making the choice to work remotely, sometimes halfway across the globe. Countries like Thailand, with its tropical sandy beaches, are welcoming them with open arms. Our colleagues at France 2 report from the island of Koh Phangan, with FRANCE 24's Wassim Cornet.

If you are going to be a digital nomad, please just stay as a digital nomad and not an influencer/youtuber who would ask local business for a free pass. As a business owner in SEA, I've had countless request from foreigners introducing themselves as a youtuber and asking for free accommodation in exchange of just a tag.

@Truth Hurts Some people make a living teaching their experience in travelling like Drew Binsky. Their job will mostly be creating content (articles, videos, Instagram posts etc) about the experience of traveling various countries. Those who are interested in this information will buy their courses or books. That sounds legit to me.

i was thinking all time that those youtuber travelling people pay for the service...isnt?? that's very disappointed! how come they want to post a video to earn money and get things for free....is not fair...go and check how much a celebrity ask money for a simple advertisement and the impact that brand will get...so a youtuber will get something for free and earn money from you tube in exchange of the number of views...if i was the owner i will prefer to call the celebrity!!!

I co-worked across ko phangan in 2016 to see if it would be an interesting place to be, but I got bored out of my mind after about 3 weeks trying to make friends with western people "finding themselves" and honestly most digital nomads are living off their savings and not actually running a successful business at all, despite preaching this lifestyle of "freedom, entrepreneuship, etc", which I also was surprised by. I immediately went straight back to Bangkok where there was tons more to do and better wifi. I went to thailand to learn about thai culture and people, not to live some sort of a permanent vacation. To each their own though, these people look happy.

Though there is something sad about working on a US salary in a place where the locals make $10 or less a day, sometimes doing very hard work such as manual labor in high temps. The compassionate expat might try to tip high to the locals or help out a local friend in need. The only true way to enjoy being a expat in a place is become friendly with the people around you.

@@jspbipro I just checked out this document and you're indeed correct. You now need a work permit to conduct "digital nomad" type work. Regardless, you always needed an appropriate visa to conduct work never mind getting a work permit.

It's certainly a great lifestyle for some time, but I think it will wear out. You're not really embedded in a local community like if you lived somewhere, many connections are superficial or short-lived. At some stage you maybe want a family and also need to think about long term social security (health insurance, pension). I also think these digital nomads don't take responsibility to society honestly, meaning they don't pay tax, don't contribute to social well-fare in their home countries where they return to if things don't go well (serious illness, unemployment).

Well, what money? Nomads don't pay taxes in Thailand and don't spend that much money. The Thai King has a net worth of about 100 billion euro. It's not worth involving some hippies in that statistics.
