  • Making progress on the horse pasture. We should have this little pasture done in a day or 2. Using our Ford 8n and a 3 point attachment auger we dug fence post holes today and got the most of the posts tamped in.

    When I was digging holes with my 8N I only let the auger go down half way, pulled it, then down 3/4, up again, and finally finished the hole.

    We have a welded "A" frame on our 8N auger arm with cross-bracing. Works similar to your "boot" design with one change; The length of the leg can be changed. So we can let the auger dig a 1' hole, then allow it to go deeper in increments of 1'. The "A" frame straddles the PTO and gives a more stable footing with no sway once the auger is digging. If we need to do a line of fencing we'll shoot a laser line and use spray chalk for each post. We can drive down the line and pop clean 1' holes along the line. We spin around and shorten the A frame legs another 12" and dig each hole a bit deeper. As we move forward we can inspect the holes as we go for roots, rocks, etc. We have issues with roots here and sometimes rocks. Our 8N hydraulic pump isn't what it used to be. So you work with what you got. Good job!!

    I remember helping my dad and uncle setting posts for barbed wire. Been many years but I'm pretty sure the corner post were installed first, wire was laid on the ground and pulled snug. Post holes were drilled where the wire was laying then post put into the holes. Wire was pulled tight then each post set with dirt and plumbed with a level. Once all post were set the variance was never more than a few inches along the run. If you set your line with rope the same applies. With the fence you're installing there is a stretcher made for it but rent if possible. Looks like you and the family had fun and that's the best thing to have no matter what the job. Be well!

    There are 4 bolt holes running along the underside of the auger spine connecting the 3 point linkage mount. Unbolt it from the 4th hole and reattach it to the 1st hole near your makeshift leg. This is the part of the design that will fix your problem. Its called mechanical advantage.

    Reminds me of drilling holes for putting a deck on my house. We rented an auger for my tractor to drill them, some holes were easier than others. My problem was a layer of shale just over 2 ft and since there isn't really any down pressure on a 3 pt it would just spin when it hit it. We ended up with dad standing on one arm of the 3 pt and I would jump on the other to get it to break though. It worked well but as soon as it started, it went down quick so I would have to jump off as soon as it started and pull up on the 3 pt or it would bury itself. Probably not the safest thing I've done but it worked and we got all the holes in.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Před 8 lety

      +walt2t LOL Probably not the safest. And I agree the no down pressure hurts a lot. And it is crazy how quickly that auger can suddenly grab and go down. It is weird how different 2 holes next to each other can be so different.

    At 6:40 when you get stuck, just grab an adjustable wrench if the driveshaft is square stock or a pipe wrench and spin in reverse until the auger works itself up enough to be freed. Go easy on that ole 8n!

    What I do for straight fences is put the two end posts in and string a TIGHT line from post to post. Have the string at the TOP of the posts, centered in the middle of top. Then, each post that you set in a hole, be sure to line up the top center of each post under the string. Your fence will end up straight!

    Been driving the family 9N for over 50 years and working a Post Hole digger during that time. One issue is your yoke on your digger frame is connected to your main auger pipe to far forward, your not getting the leverage you need to come out of the hole. Adjust that and you should be fine.

    Great job! I need to get a 8N or 9N. That beats post hole diggers all day. To help set the poles you can get a post level, they are not much and you can strap it on the post with rubber band and you can level both sides at once. I use mine a lot. no stopping and reaching for the level over and over. Just a small tip. Beat they can not wait for CJ to get there.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Před 8 lety

      +SierraDale Homestead That level sounds great. The bending over and grabbing stuff all day can kill my already bad back. But after doing 1 or 2 of these holes I remembered that last year when I put a fence it I kept it all in a wheelbarrow right next to the post and leaned things against it to. Really helps a lot. Then move it from post to post. Love my tractor. Yes it could be more powerful, yes it could have more bells and whistles (like live PTO), yes it could have more.....but I REALLY LIKE IT!!! I also weighted the tires (fluid in them) and with the chains on top of that....no snow up here can stop me!! :) - Mike

    I have a 51 Ford 8N. I am rerunning all of my fence lines and setting new boss posts and Hbraces because the previous owner looked to have used the wrong class of lumber (10 years old and everything is already rotted out). I have been debating on getting an auger for my set up. You have it in neutral with the PTO lever engaged, correct? How do you keep the holes straight? What diameter posts are you running? I have 4" boss posts and 6" H-brace posts. I am going to put them 3.5' down. I have fairly good untouched soil here in eastern Kansas. I did my first post on the new farm by hand and it was pretty easy digging.

      Yes, corners and every 50' is 6 inch posts. I believe technically the others are 3.5 inch!

      +me myself and I I really don't and I just tried googling and was not successful. But they are basically kind of like very large screen door window inserts...kind of??? They have a metal border and are just screwed up to the side of the porch. I remove 2 or 3 when it gets real warm. If I can remember....I will show them in detail on my next "growing update" video. I have told Jeni so hopefully we can remember to :) - Mike

    Ain't puttin' up fence f u n? ;P LOL Doing a good job there guys! I watched a guy put up a horse fence with landscape timbers and chicken staples not that long ago. Gee, wonder why the horses had it torn down in about 6 months.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Před 8 lety +1

      +MotherOfManyHorses LOL...we aren't going that route. We were going to go with a High Tensile fence but after hearing lots of bad stories of cut up horses we decided to sink the money into the "no climb" fencing. And hopefully he does't tear this down in 6 months. I really don't want to re-do it!!! LOL - Mike

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead Před 8 lety

      +Pratt Family Homestead I think you're doing just fine. ;D Just so long as you use something a little heftier than chicken wire staples, you're good to go. It might be a good idea to use a board on the top from post to post as some horses will "stretch" the fence by leaning their long necks over the top of the fence to get to the "greener" grass on the other side. Or, you can run electric along the top. But honestly, if either are a problem for you, I wouldn't stress over it much. He didn't look to me like he was a serious fence tester (unlike my girl ;P).

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Před 8 lety

      +MotherOfManyHorses Thank you for the input. Good stuff. How about a non electrified wire across the top in order to protect the fence? Also I am,planning on putting the fence on the outside of the posts and securing it to the posts with staples and wire wrapped around the post, Does that sound good? - Mike

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead Před 8 lety +1

      +Pratt Family Homestead Putting the fence on the inside of the posts (between horse and posts) is the correct way to do it. That way, if the horse pushes on the fence it won't pop the staples. So you're good there. A non hot wire along the top? I don't really see the sense of it. Wire will eventually stretch. A barbed wire (which I am not a fan of for horses, although I have seen others use it), or a hotwire will keep the horse from leaning over the fence, but so will a board. You could just wait to see how he is. If he's not a fence tester, then you will be fine with just the no-climb. BUT if you notice him trying to stretch his neck over it, then you want to remedy it asap. Now, if there is someone else out there who has had good results with just a plain wire along the top, then fine. But with what experience I have had, it would be my last choice for the job.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Před 8 lety

      +MotherOfManyHorses yeah....lol....I was asking about doing it the incorrect way :) I like the looks the incorrect way do much better. Lol. But I also know it is not about looks. But I was just thinking if I could secure the fence to the post with additional wire around the post and fence Staples that maybe that would work okay. Also I completely agree about the top wire. I was kind of just talking out loud. And no barbed wire for me

    -I hope you only going to have one in that small pen, even at that there will be no grass left and it will be standing in mud, I see it here all the time, and they have huge fields but its in one small area, horse are gig time grass an hay burners, and so many don't do much with them. cant eat them, there great if you have work horses but you have a good tractor, as as hydraulic person on new an old tractors id say your relief vale or pump is week, that 8n should rip the thing right out of the ground. you cant beat them 8n for the best homestead tractor, just needs some tlc, I am in red clay and itt will jam that thing down an rip it out, clay is the dam crap to work with, rock hard an sticky when wet, and clay is always wet a few inchs down as it only drys 1 inch a year

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Před 7 lety

      Thank you very much! There is only one horse in that area. We are going to be expanding that area next year. This will still be his common area, but we are going to have some rotational grazing paddocks but in around it. While your right this area the grass isn't really growing, it has not turned into a complete mud pit .. not yet. But, again, the grass stays scalped to the ground. Also, I completely agree with your assessment of the 8n .. good and bad. I do believe the relief valve is bad as it doesn't stay in the up position very long either when under load and PTO disengaged.

    I have that very same auger. What an infernal pain in the back side that thing is. Your "leg" and the jacks look like a good idea. Am going to give it a try. It is always pulling itself into the ground all the way to the gear box and tipping sideways. Grrrrr.
    Do you folks work the homestead for a living or is it a hobby with you folks working offsite? Always curious to know how folks are doing it. We work offsite and use the homestead for overall sanity. www.jazfarmblog.com

      +Hippie Farmer The Homesteader I completely agree with your review of the auger :) It is a pain. If those jack stands are under my 3 point braces....then the auger is almost 4 foot down. I fought a lot with it today with the bigger auger head on there.
      Jeni is a stay at home Mom/homesteader/house caretaker/and the list goes on and on. I work offsite unfortunately. I love my job...I really do. But since we moved here a year and half ago I have started dreading going to work and dreaming of just staying here for my work day.- Mike
