Johnny was Jimi's first name, and he grew up just down the road from me, born just about 40 years before me, and I am in awe of that fact... Say hello to the sunrise you are watching from the bottom of the sea in the land of the New Rising Sun 🌞🎶🌬️🌌 "That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing" 🌌 I think that Jimi understood this simple yet deeply powerful Truth as well as anyone, about the possibilities of unity between spirit and mind. 26 years ago I started playing guitar because of Jimi. I play constantly and I am still not a pimple on his ass. But listening to him has made me find my own relationship to music in the spirit of him. What makes him the greatest and far better IMO than any other guitar player I’ve heard is that he creates a real vibe. His entire vocabulary is his, there is no imitation, only a homage to what he loved and what fills his spirit. He is so good because he is brave, the entire arrangement of what you just heard was created in the moment. It was fresh and never to be heard again. In that, he plays without any script and allows absolute vulnerability. It’s not just that but the level of everything he does, the execution the tone, the dynamics, the variation. I wonder what the hell Beethoven would thing. If he were open minded enough to listen, he might be terrified and probably think a demon was hollering in a musical language no one has ever heard or would ever even imagine.

Jimi is a legend for many reasons. First and foremost; he changed music. Period! Not just Rock N Roll and the blues but ALL music that had guitars in it. There was music before Jimi Hendrix and AFTER Jimi Hendrix. Never to be the same after. Very few can that be truly said about.... Bill Haley, Elvis, Buddy Holly, The BEATLES, DYLAN, The CREAM, HENDRIX, Zeppelin, Van Halen, The Sex Pistols, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains , Nirvana the whole Seattle thing. Before and after. Some to greater and lesser degrees but Hendrix was in it for the music. He could have done Voodoo Chile twenty different ways and still been one of the greats. But He kept learning, kept changing, and kept growing as a musician. In all aspects. Sure he changed guitar playing forever and without him we don’t have Jimmy Page as he is or Jeff Beck as he is or Eddie Van Halen or Randy or Satch or Vai. But not only that he tried to grow as a songwriter and a singer and as previously mentioned a lyricist. He was the total package. And THAT is why he sits at the Big Table.

No, it makes complete sense because his skills got better every single performance of his life. The freedom enabled by the technique is just awe-inspiring. At times you think maybe he lost the thread, rambling in and out of songs...but listen again in the right frame of mind (paint fumes optional) and you can't hold back the tears of joy.
It does beg the question of whether he might have had a hard time imagining he could develop any further...and might have felt it was time to exit the stage. But I hope that's just melodramatic hindsight...

The Dead had at least 5 members to bounce everything off of. Jimi did all that incredible guitar and vocalizing on top of that for show after show. It was all on him so it must have been a tremendously exhausting thing for him! He probably would have expanded his band into something perhaps larger-and more ensemble like if he would have lived. In interviews he mentioned he was interested in an orchestral type of situation. He never stopped innovating or surprising. He always had another great tune up his sleeve. @@curbozerboomer1773 Well in 68 he and his wife June were beaming. They were really proud of him. They welcomed us in and showed some of his stuff. June in particular saw his artistic side and had some drawings he did and talked about his clothes which she says she inspired. That was pretty early and my guess is they had to dial back a kid calling up like me. Al wasn’t drunk and didn’t in any way come off as anything but a proud father at this point in his life. I think his marrying June really stabilized his life. Obviously Jimi had a pretty rough childhood but we got him at a perfect moment to move the needle in so many ways.
I got the sense that Jimi wanted his family to be proud of him. How many just minted rock stars would tell a kid like me to ring up his Dad?
