- We've reached the tipping point of the Analogue Pocket, where nearly all the systems I would want to play on the device are now possible thanks to community cores. In this video we'll look at the recent advances in core development that allows this device to come very close to being an ultimate portable FPGA machine.

That is such a beautiful machine
So expensive too with the dock. My meh, you only live once.
Your channel and webpage are such amazing resources for our community. Thanks
Thanks so much for this video. I haven't messed around with this kind of thing in a long time, but your guide and this video made it super simple. Got my Pocket up and running with a few Cores in no time. :3
Mine is still a while away and I'm not even worried. I was hoping the software options would grow as I wait. It definitely has, people put in some great work.
Exactly the same situation. I'm just patiently getting more and more excited for it to arrive
What is the avg wait time?
I think someone said they ordered in the first 10mins and there in Q4 of this year,
What was the price like and do they have good rma/customer support?
@@GameTimeWhy Expensive! I think I ended up spending around £300 ($340), and I didn't buy many accessories, either... If you're more interested in getting the best value, check out something like the retroid pocket 3. Don't know about the RMA situation, hopefully I don't have to find out.
I just watched your other video this morning trying to decide if I should buy this. Thanks for the update!
Thank you for the guide! I was able to set up my Pocket in no time. Much appreciated!
Awesome channel I'm just discovering! I'm surprised it's not included in your favorite handhelds of 2022!
Dying over here for that EmuDeck update vid. Thank you for what you do.
I think I only started seeing and watching your videos because I was interested in picking up a Miyoo Mini. I used your videos and guide to set that up, and now I watch almost every upload. 'bout damn time I subscribed. Thanks for being so thorough and so kind! I've been loving the cat breaks, and I still catch myself repeating the way you said "don't even worry about it" in a Miyoo modding video 😂💜
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I don't even remember saying that, but it definitely sounds like something I would say :D

Can it use save states.
It's the price that's the killer for me. $220 with an insane $60 delivery charge. Then you have import charges and taxes. It would honestly end up costing close to the price of a Steam Deck to actually order one into Europe.
Yeah. It totals to about €325 with VAT to France, and that's not even including potential duty fees. Would love to add this to the collection but the price is completely nuts at this point.
That's the main reason I haven't gotten one yet, I'm kind of torn between getting a Steam Deck or one of these. I do tons of emulation, I even emulate WiiU/Switch and PS3 quite often, and I doubt that little Analogue Pocket will be able to handle those types of games. The main thing I really like about the Analogue Pocket is that it's a nice portable size and the battery actually lasts awhile, unlike the Steam Deck's poor battery life and massive bulky size... If I'm going to dish out that much cash for a portable gaming device, I'd rather get the Steam Deck so I can emulate EVERYTHING I have plus play Steam games.
I agree, the cost of shipping is outrageous, but I’m glad I just pulled the trigger and did it. I packed my own lunches for a week and skipped my morning Tim Hortons coffee for a couple of weeks and I honestly felt better about it. All-in-all, it was worth it for me.
@@grizzlywhisker I’m a Switch owner and even that thing is too unwieldy to take out with me, so a Steamdeck is just way too much kit for my morning bus ride to work. The Analogue literally fits in my pocket and that’s such a blessing. If portability is a concern and you want to focus on retro games, the Pocket is unbeatable right now in those regards.
@@adamyo9003 Mine turned up three days ago and honestly its incredible. I have modded GBA, DMG and GBC but this is something totally different. The screen is amazing and the battery life is exceptional. If your tempted then jump in now as it will be a long wait.
Great Video Retro Game Corps! thank you so much. Your guides are perfect!
Just got my Pocket, OMG EXCELLENT VIDEO!!
SUBBED!!!
Very much looking forward to watch this video again tomorrow. After 14 freaking long months my Analogue Pocket is finally arriving tomorrow.
Thanks for posting the link to the song of your intro! It's very catchy
Thank you for the constant updates and attention to detail, just got my own pocket and I am going to install cores right away! You're the GOAT
Was it easy to do? They're restocking Friday and I was gonna buy one lol

Dig Dug was super popular in the arcade in the early to mid 80s. I feel that I have a few years on you since we even had Dig Dug at our roller skating arcade in Alaska. Still a great game even today.
I've been wanting an Analogue Pocket since I first saw them advertised on IG back in 2019. I ended up getting a Steam Deck and Anbernic RG35XX instead. I feel like I'll be able to do more with the Steam Deck, and the RG35XX is perfect to carry around when I'm out and about throughout the day. Love your videos man, very informative!
Elite combo
So glad I found this. I was about to go get Everdrives and Analogue cartridge adapters to play various systems.
The Dock works well, I'd recommend using an 8Bitdo pad, it already has a button that functions as the Analogue logo button
thank you. i was able to do it following this video 🖤
It was already so good, then this came along. 🎉🎉 hard to believe it could get even better! 👾🕹👏🏽👏🏽
Great video very helpful
If I didn't own a MiSTer I would probably get one with a dock, but for portable gaming nothing will beat it with that FPGA. Great Video.
Awesome tutorial. Idk why I thought this was gonna be difficult.
I can’t wait to get mine in the mail. Already set up the microsd card. Just need to get my hands on something while I wait!
Great video, my man! Does this mean we might be getting a MiSTer FPGA episode soon? I would love to see that as you make the best tutorials in the biz and would love to see you break it down for everyone.
I’ve been really wanting one of theses more and more with all the updates its been getting. Just wish it wasnt so vauge with shipping timelines and having to pay up front. Still may end up ordering one but my RP3 order will do all the same things technically.
Russ. You have the most relaxing voice.
Lol. True 😂
He sounds a lot like someone, but I can never pinpoint who the hell it is I’m thinking of, and it drives me crazy.
Agreed. Said this on one of his other videos its super relaxing...and that intro theme tune is fricken awesome!
@@jdisdetermined maybe Colin? This does not compute?
@@jdisdetermined he sounds JUST like mark Zuckerberg a character from the social network
I was just about to ask about the Dock till you mentioned at the end lol. If you ever get it I'd love to see how it performs with these cores and wireless controllers. Getting this for half the cost of a Mister even if it's not as powerful would be nice
Nice Video!❤
Hope they release at some point a GBA form factor Pocket. It would be perfection.
I hope too. Never been a fan of the original GB form factor
Retroid pocket2+/3 is what you seek
@@aceman1126 the RP2+ is really good and is definitely the right choice for most people but not if you want FPGA
@@ce7.0 Also RP3 resolution is very low to play every system with crisp pixels.
@@franciscobutte ?? the RP3 is just over 720p; no console that it can play is anywhere near that resolution. the rp2+'s 480p 4:3 screen is already perfect for most retro consoles.
I love my pocket! Cartridges and OpenFPGA all working great. PC Engine , Genesis, Neo Geo, all up and running perfectly.
Under Tools > Developer > USB SD Access will allow you use a USB cable to connect to your computer so you don’t have to transfer the SD card back and forth. I thought I saw a note somewhere indicating that it’s not meant to be used for large file transfers, but I haven’t seen any problems with it yet.
:O looks very nice
I'm generally pretty good at putting it out of my mind that I've had my order in for idk how long at this point till I see vids/updates like this haha. It's exciting and makes it hard to be patient. Still though, I wonder what more updates will happen between now and "something something group c 2023" for mine next year! I wonder if they ramped up production at all in a smaller scale but to something similar to what Valve did with the Steam Decks. One can dream!
I got mine a couple days ago. You get it yet?
I enjoyed my time with the Pocket, but even with all the new cores supported, I just preferred playing retro on a larger screen with better ergonomics. I still have a lot of GB and GBA carts, but my GBA SP with upgraded screen and grip are my preferred way to play mostly due to nostalgia and also how the d-pad and buttons feel.
What kind of grip did you get for your SP? I modded a SP a while back and did just about everything but a grip haha.
@@J2digital Yeah I'm wondering this as well. I want to do another modded sp and add the fast forward chip... but that's so much work.
I don't have a Pocket, and they are very tempting. at the same time, I could get a used Switch lite for much cheaper, and probably get it modded and it would still be less expensive, play more systems and have that bigger screen and better ergonomics.
Steamdeck
@@CRAZYKID123454321 steamdeck is a monster and double or triple the price of some of these.
just ordered one
I would love to see a GBA SP model of this thing. I really want to get one.
Best idea ever. And with the same clicky dpad :)
picked up the glow in the dark pocket as my first pocket on a whim. i have many gameboys and handhelds that i use occasionally so never felt the desire much but the more i look into the openFPGA side of things the more excited i get about getting that pocket. similar to you, i grew up playing NES and genesis games a loooot and i still have both consoles from back when i was a kid (37 now) with all the carts still in their original boxes and i would love to play them more often but i rarely have time to sit down at the tv and boot up the genesis and start playing. having all those games directly in my hand in such a great form factor im sure will be a lot nicer and will allow me to play more often.
Streets of rage, TMNT, sonic, tazmania...etc so many titles to dig into! i never really cared that much for the handheld games they felt too lofi for me , the 16 bit higher refresh rate stuff is where retrogaming peaked imo
For me the Pocket would be the handheld to get to go with my Deck. It's got something the Deck doesn't in being FPGA, a really nice screen as well and the price is actually reasonable for an Analogue made device as a lot of their past devices where a lot more boutique price wise. My only issue is it's hard for me personally to justify dropping another 220$ on a second hand held device to go with the Deck in less than a year since bought my Deck.
Receiving mine today. Glad I didnt cancel it when I got the notice I was in group B.
Is there any new news for the analog pocket? It’s been 9 months since this video, would love an updated one!!
Gorgeous screen
Great video - you should take a few minutes with Dig Dug!!! It's a classic...
Does all the pocket features come over to the Emulators? Can you change display look and colors like you can with GB cartridge games with Emulators GB?
your videos and website are insane. Random question, but is YT your full time job? I can't imagine the work you're putting into all of this!
Thanks for watching! Yes I’ve been full time for about three months now.
This system is coming a long really well. I hope they would release a horizontal form factor version someday. I am old now and I don't hate my hands. A turbo function/button would go a long way as well.
Great video as usual, but I need a slightly bigger screen for my old eyes. I have a SteamDeck and at 7 inches it's a little too big but plays everything, and also an RG351P which at 3.5 inches is a little too small and will play up to PS1. So the next device I get will be a 5 inch with a better CPU to play PS2 or PS3. I say roll on the next generation of handhelds.
you need to do an update vid on what your favorite emu device is!
They should release a 4:3 analog pocket and call it the Analog Pocket 16 bit or Super Analog Pocket or something like that. Specialized for playing Snes, Megadrive, and NES. Would be awesome. A 4:3 with integer scaling for those console resolutions would be better suited.
Super nintendo was actually 8:7
I agree that it would have been better had they used a 4:3 display on this handheld. Hopefully if we ever get a horizontal layout version of it that they will give it a 4:3 display as well.
At the beginning of the video you talked about being excited about seeing what would happen within 6 months from the video release, and it's been nearly that now. Has as much as you expected changed?
Just bought it with complet package, dock, case, adapters. Quite expensive but a must as a retrogamer.
Top Gear 3000 is such an underrated SNES racing game.
Hey bud, great video as always (helped me sort my Odin).
Please may I ask what size sd card are you using?
RG353V has a beautiful screen 😍
I have an idea to somehow figure out a way to run snes files off of a cart. I thought it might be cool to make a special gameboy cartridge and art for one or two of my favorite snes titles. But I have no idea were to start on the technical aspect. Do you think this is a silly or interesting idea? Curious if you have any thoughts. Thank you for the follow up video.
After 13 month of pain and agony, this is FINALLY in my hand, so I actually get to use this guide.
Did it take 13 months for delivery upon purchase?!
@@Groznor.Grumbles yeah… and i wasn’t even that late.
@@TheCasualSubculturist Maaan I just ordered mine this afternoon. So I should expect it sometime 2024? lol
@@Groznor.Grumbles probably not that late. Group B like me had some serious supply logistic problem at their end. I think that is solved now so whatever order from now will process be lot faster than 13 month. You still probably have to wait more than a month at least I think.
@@TheCasualSubculturist Dang! Thank you for the insight, friend. I've been browsing reddit threads and youtube comments to put together something for an expected timeframe. I'd be okay with whatever as long as I knew.
I just beat minish cap today on my AP. (Cartridge)
Hello and good work. I would like to ask, if is it possible to transfer pokemon or battle, with two devices, using the gba or gb core for example.
Retro Achievements would make this amazing for me
Random question looking for a retro gaming handheld. Looking to play gameboy color games. But don’t want to do all the leg work do any systems come pre uploaded that you would recommend. Thanks in advance
My problem with this system from the beginning is that it didn't play WonderSwan Color games, is there a WonderSwan Color core for it?
are you gonna make a end of the year tier list for 2022 ? im kinda confused with all the new year releases
does the internal clock of pokemon games are synched to IRL time while playing roms by any chance? I remember for pokemon gold/silver and crystal it was kind of a big deal.
Hey Russ, I saw some frame skipping on the snes, did you notice it this as well? Is it prevalent? Thank you!
Could you make a video comparing the FPGA emulation of the Pocket to the software emulation of the Steam Deck?
I'm waiting until CPS1 & CPS2 are ported to the Pocket. Would be awesome to play the two Mega Man Arcade games on there :D
If they keep releasing cores for systems like Virtual Boy, Wonderswan, neo-geo pocket, game and watch, etc, this handheld system will be a must have for me
So I made this comment a year ago, and I just got my analogue pocket today in the mail. Using this vid to update and add cores/backup roms/etc….
I just found this channel, and saw the Odin guide. I’m about to find that. I have an Odin and need guidance.
I absolutely love my pocket. I have the normal in black that I everyday carry and I have the retro smoke I keep in the box 😁
14:15 I first thought some arcade cores were not working.
Thanks to you I realized I had to wait until it booted past the garbled mess. Duh to me.
A good idea for a video would be a comparison between NES gameplay between an analogue pocket and an anbernic, maybe the rg350/1m, to see the difference in video graphics, sound, latency, etc, keep up the good work 👍👍👍
That is a good idea, I have been thinking about doing a "blind" test between the AP and other devices (which is partly why I wanted to get the dock), to see if I can tell the difference between the two.
@@RetroGameCorps A blind test would be great content!
"If we're seeing this many updates just in the first month i'm really excited to see what this is gonna look like six months from now".
Well, i'd say about exactly the same. Luckily Analogue is such a communicative company so we have a good idea of what to expect! 😅
any idea if this works with the Nreal Air? Those glasses work great on the Steam Deck, and I think the included screen on this device is just too small for my aging eyes. (I have a strong prescription so while sharp everything gets small, and if I look too close too the screen my near vision sucks and everything goes blurry....
The best part about this is the cores are basically the same so both the pocket and MiSTer are going to get even more attention going forward.
More interest means more cores, and possibly cores we didn't think were possible.
I found your channel looking for a portable to play Pico-8 games - and that drew me to your videos on the Miyoo - If the Pocket did Pico-8 it would be pretty clear what I should get. - I am definitely considering getting this for cores - but if you had to recommend a portable just to play Pico-8 games - what would it be?
I just bought one of these a few days ago with a GG adapter. God knows when I'll ever get it. They don't even give you an estimated date. They're quick to snatch your money. I might get the dock at a later date seeing as it now has console cores.
I bought mine last year and still won't get it until 2023, so expect a long wait.
@@chrisrichfield8906 I can look forward to having it delivered to my grave. Lol.
Can you use your link cable with Gameboy games like Pokemon or do you have to have the physical cartidge for those?
does the cores contained all the games? Or do you still have to download them
This makes the Analogue Pocket a lot more robust as a machine. I'd like a GBA Pocket version or just the ability to get it sooner than the current timeframe. I don't mind waiting for like 1-4 months for a delivery but it's a lot longer than that and that kind of sucks still and the price is a lot for me.
i just preordered one of these myself and yeah the shipping cost is ridiculous, i live in the uk so i also had to pay the $59.99 international shipping
I’m still not completely clear on this . Do I have to install the games myself or are they already preloaded
Ultimate emudeck guide 😫
Finally got one, thing is a beauty. Childhood dream, about to do a Pokemon Crystal run. 🙌🏽
How did it go?
Running PSX games on this device will be a dream come true.
With the recent restock of the Analogue Pocket is there a chance for a video if it’s still worth getting nearly three years later? If you got a dock is there a possibility of this being a decent two or three player at home arcade solution? Like if I got the dock and I had a few 8bitdo controllers could I play something like double dragon or double dare on the snes with a second player?
Itd be cool to have a gamecube era handheld
Steam deck coming on friday. Excited for your emudeck guide! Keep up the awesome content Russ
*_Get ready for your entire gaming world to change._*
Could you pls do some updates about AP like NGP etc. THK!
Easily one of the nicest looking handheld device
So the core aspect is using an emulator to run the games from the SD card correct? Just tryna get an understanding on what’s going on
Where'd you get that reflective Analogue logo for the back?
Sakura Retro Modding on Etsy!
Are you able to save your game state or have saved on the memory?
I just ordered 2 of these, what size sd card do you recommend.😊
Does it come with games? Or can you input digital downloads of them?
Does the sleep function work when using GBA core directly on the Pocket?
As much of an achievement the Analogue Pocket is, with the FPGA, the incredible screen... I can't help but feel that Retroid, Ambernic, Ayaneo, and the Steam Deck have all kinda made it redundant. It feels kinda like a true retro enthusiast product.
Same! I got an Odin and an RG351V and I looooooove the RG351V and it plays everything up until psx and most of the arcade games minus Killer instinct extremely well. Even Atomiswave/Naomi plays extremely well and it's cheaper!
I've had the same reaction. I AM an enthusaist- a mega enthusiast- but I actually just sold my Pocket because I felt like these updates are "very slowly getting the Analogue Pocket to the point where it will one day maybe do half of what my Retroid Pocket can do today". And I have the original GBs in their various flavors so the FPGA aspect doesn't have any unique value to me either. I can't really figure out where the very small Venn diagram of "people who care about FPGA-acccurate gameplay BUT don't own the original systems AND don't want any of the quality of life features enabled by emulation" really exists in terms of the audience for the Analogue.
I think it's the accuracy that this can offer that people are enthusiastic about.
@@GordonGordon Sure, but as per the above, you can also buy original hardware for much less, and most of these new cores still have a long way to go before approaching even the accuracy of emulation. So again, you're getting modern hardware as opposed to original, but it doesn't have any of the conveniences or, indeed, accuracy (for the new cores) of any other modern hardware.
@Jeremy all logical. I have no issues with the Pocket or people liking it. It's just a very narrow use case.
Can we get a new video for this - I just ordered mine and curious if it has improved further :)
With this screen, you can basically do CRT emulation. You can already have CRT Royal and similar on Retroarch, but with a UHD screen you can do hardware CRT emulation on a detail level that is impossible at this moment on a handheld.
Sadly, the problem is going to be again availability. It was hard/impossible to get this before, now you wont get it at all because scalpers are buying every unit. The device goes at this moment for 700USD+ in original package, and 1000USD+ sealed. Which is ridiculous.
But as it stands, its probably the only small factor device at this moment that can emulate a crt screen in that authenticity.
