    I use “classical piano” station on both pandora and Alexa. I put it on when I leave the apartment. I also play “rain sounds” at night when we are sleeping.
    Also this helps them not to hear/bark at outside sounds. Really beneficial if you have neighbors

    Some people forget that dogs can be like children, and much like children, if you don't set boundaries for them, then they become spoiled, and like Scooby here, they can suffer from separation anxiety.

    My 8 month old puppy Hudson (chihuahua spaniel mix) is dealing with isolation distress. He gets plenty of exercise and nice long walks twice a day. When someone is home, Hudson is fine to be in his crate, wait patiently, or play with his toys in another part of the home while we’re in the bathroom or kitchen.
    Initially we believed him to have separation anxiety, but as we reinforced crate training and constant rewarding for being quiet when left the room, we discovered his issue is only when we leave the home.
    We approach leaving our house the same way we approached crate training and keeping him in other rooms (we call them “In and Outs”).. started with short periods of time, rewards when he was calm, extended to longer periods of time the more comfortable he got. When doing In and Out training, we can build up his time to hours in his crate, or 15/20 minutes waiting outside the house (it’s a cold winter in Canada, can’t stay out there long).
    The problem comes when we leave the house and Hudson realizes this no longer is a training exercise, he howls excessively until our return. He refuses to relax in his crate or take a nap. He once howled for 3 hours straight when we needed to go out. How am I suppose to reward a calm puppy for my return if he’s never calm and doesn’t stop howling? We need to eventually re-enter our home, but because he’s howling that means Hudson wins.
    We can’t do “In and Out” build ups everytime we need to go out to the gym, dinner, grocery shopping, etc.
    Please help!!

    I wonder if seperation anxiety is easier to work with in 10 week old puppies. I have a puppy that is already displaying seperation anxiety behaviors, from following us around the house to incessant barking when left alone. And it gets worse when ignored.

    • @leoandrews1696
      @leoandrews1696 Před 10 měsíci +2

      "it gets worse when ignored" - suggest picking a time when you have nothing much else to do, and follow the tips in the video. Plus, do plenty of research and write down what you are doing, as a plan helps keep the focus. I always suggest timing a barking episode. When you're listening to incessant barking, a minute can seem like four hours. Knowing that you have only been at it for a few minutes can help keep you strong. Also, warn the neighbours - you don't want any complaints on your record. Good luck. Being strong now will pay dividends in the future, I promise.

    I have a minature dacshund that has seperation anxiety, she will be 1y/o in february and the vet has prescribed her Prozac, she can handle being in a pen and a carrier though the moment i leave her alone she can scream and carry on, unfortunately when i first got her i spoilt her and ive been trying to walk in and out several times however i dont seem to be having the best of luck trying to get her not to worry when i leave, also she doesnt like to leave the house for walks and that when i do walk her shes hesitant however the moment we turn around and she knows were walking home she instantly starts pulling on her lead as much as she can trying to get home as quick as possible despite me pulling her back to correct her, she even once slipped her collar and she just immediately ran home although we were only a few doors down
    is there any way i can address these issues?

    I would love to see the full episode of this. I have an 18 month old miracle bottle fed golden retriever (she was born a week late at 0.7 oz and wasn’t expected to live) who has severe separation anxiety. I have tried the stay and walk out of the room using incremental distances and if I get more than 20 feet from her, she breaks the stay and follows me. She can be fast asleep and knows if I leave the room. I have tried to walk my older dog alone only to hear nonstop barking. We were gone 5 minutes and were in sight of the windows and I came back to find bite marks all over my window frame. She was fine when I went to work as long as my older dog was there but I am afraid of leaving her alone in the house .... and she freaks out if I try to crate her even though she gets fed in her crate. I am at a loss.

      Your dog needs to be corrected when it exhibits this behavior. It's basically throwing a temper tantrum and you need to interrupt the behavior and tell it that is not what you want. A legit trainer will use an ecollar to teach her to be quiet in the crate. All the other methods e.g. kong filled with peanut butter, exercise, etc. does not work on most dogs.

    I literally can’t find Bioacoustics music like this anywhere. I use Amazon Alexa to play music for my dogs when I’m not home, and I’m seriously struggling to find a service with any of this music that I can use with my Alexa.
    Does Victoria have any links to a service that provides this music anywhere? I’m willing to pay for a subscription and even if I have to get a CD player or something else other than using my Alexa that’s fine too, I just need something to help my dog. He’s really struggling after our 2 older dogs passed away within a year of eachother and he’s become extremely clingy to the point of needing to be in the same room as us. If we step outside the house but don’t leave he will jump the baby gate despite have hip dysplasia and will often start howling and screaming at the door. He’s become destructive when we leave and we have no room in the home for a kennel as he’s a large dog, so we have to do a sweep of the house for any item he could possibly chew to prevent him from getting into things and from possibly hurting himself. He started medication, but after a month of the first one it has made him worse in some ways and we do not think this particular one is the best fit for him so we will have to wait for the vet’s recommendation on what meds to try next. He’s never had these problems before our other dogs passed away and it kills us to him struggling with the grief.

      I totally appreciate it's a show but something like SA is quite a debilitating anxiety and to be handled in this is rushed manner. Turning your back on a dog that already has anxiety present can heighten the anxiety and the dog become frustrated. As their guardians and the main source of information and assurance we need to create a much easier digestible environment. Walking out the room in the first instance isnt the best foundation to work on. As it shows here in the video. It's missing out vital steps, jumping straight to leaving the room for a dog that cannot cope with the woman leaving seems to be and is setting the dog up to fail. Especially adding the layer of turning your back. It is just a clip I get that but it is on the TV and people will duplicate it and make matters worse. Setting up the environment and teaching a really good fun "settle" on a bed or mat. Build up from that how long the dog can stay on the mat. Good to have a bed in the middle of a room or a place where you can practise being just in their peripheral vision to working up to walking around the dog to a whole circle. Dogs this delicate need time. I add a kong or licki mat and just practise walking around the room whilst the dog is on the bed having the kong. Again not a rushed exercise. By slowly desensitisating a dog to movement you can then start on walking backwards, always facing the dog, towards the exit and then go back and release. Because there is already a really good settle established on the bed or mat and your movement around the room this helps the dog feel safer. I release each time the dog goes to bed by walking up and releasing. And then repeat. Kikopup has a good video on CZcams for the settle I believe :)
