You said old man I am, I am 66 and still laying units I have to need the money.love watching this young man lay corners it reminds me when I was his age now I don't have a back or knees but because of the economy I got to still put them in good luck my man.
So talented for such a young guy! Thanks for the lesson. Jennifer
Excellent tutorial Mason. I'm a retired showbiz builder (movies and TV sets) and now I'm working on my house. I watch a lot of DIY/construction/how to videos and the most common mistake I see people make is "too much talk and not enough action." I often find myself yelling at the screen, "Stop talking and show me." You have have struck a very good balance of the show and tell. You have a real knack for the teaching. (I don't) I'm about to build a block wall so this is very helpful. Thanks! I liked and subscribed too.
Love your videos , thanks for all of them. Just starting out on my own and trying to get better at block work .
Keel it up but you must follow code he a good msson but I don't use my level and tap with the level I was trained by union mason's we git graded especially safety he can lay end Block good and corner lead plum etc but you must drop rear in the footing and your mot supposed to use 11 point trowels and tap level we got ass chewing on this stuff but I suppose there is no engineering folks around
Props buddy. Keep up the good work. Dont see many young guys passionate about there work let alone a good trade.
Great video. Subscribed so I can watch more of your videos as well as witness your channel blow up. Keep up the good work!
You are a great teacher Mason. I can do this.
Very nice work 👍👍 for 22 you've already learned alot and you teach what you know well - thanks for sharing that it was good stuff - best wishes stay healthy and take care
Good stuff. Thank you Mason!
This kid is very intelligent respect
Thanks pal ! It helps for sure nice job
Nice work, very thorough
Go ahead kid! Your kicking ass for a young man.
I want to be like you when I'm older, construction 4 life always I learn from the best😎🤑🌟👍
Only 22 and working like a prol ,congrats, they are more than one way to skin a cat ,the important thing is the result, square, level an plum,I read some comment, and I would say this , I like the way I do it that the way you don’t,get it done ,move it on,just subscribed, watch and learn
This dude is informative. Ty
Hola amigo miró tus vídeos megusta cómo trabajas yo también soy blockero megusta pegar block tengo 61 años cumplidos i aun me rinde pegar block siempre esido rápido saludos para ti desde Tijuana gracias por compartir 👍💪
I can smell the pall mall's and the bush beer out this video😂.. Great video buddy
Vely helpful, thanks!
These are great instructional videos. Do you have more for this specific project?
Thanks
Great video. Thanks.
Good stuff brother!!!
Awesome teacher, thanks
Are footer drains not required there? Great tutorial!!
Good video
great video
Keep practicing mate, you'll get there 👍
Perfect.
I noticed in other countries they don’t build leads . They use a story pole and a couple 2x4s to brace the story pole out to the dirt with some stakes . My next foundation I’m going to set up story poles and see if I like it, I think it will be faster and easier and more accurate with my marks .
Yea that right tgats what does too
Perkins Bros use story poles.
I’ve only used story poles for brick jobs.
My "pole" has stories to tell.....
Story poles are faster however you have to be fast at setting them up.
We’re those the light weight Haydite block ? Just Hearing them rub together when you picked one up reminded me of a Haydite . All we can get is super heavy concrete blocks here.
Great content brother. Do you have any advice for someone who has no prior experience but wants to get into building walls and other brick/stone work?
I drill into the footing and pound the rebar in also.
Get yourself 1/4 pack of rebar Safety 🍄 Cap's, life saver for ditch Work 🤕😉, Great Channel 👍
Is it code for vertical rods there?
Wish I had seen this before my DIY retaining wall let's just say it's the talk of the town on how to not build a wall.
Good job m
Newb mason here - thanks for sharing your craft. Have not finished the entire video yet so apologies if you discuss this at some point, but wondering what the requirements are for the base? Do you just dig and compact? Or do you add crushed stone or sand or something beforehand?
Respect. Question. Doing a 60 foot engineered retaining wall. 12 inch block and up to 5 foot L footing. Elevation change is over 10 foot from start to finish with stepped footings. Is a control joint applicable? Height is 3 to 7 foot. Hillside
Quick question.......where are your footer string lines? I'm a 25 year mason, and most footers have string lines to indicate square.....you know the ones they use to dig the footer?
Evidently you're plumbing off a line you've established off the footer.
You should also explain why you do not need to range it in with the other corners. Like because its under the ground and does not need to be perfect. Other than that ...i respect the fact that you have the confidence to even make a video.
I use a 90° laser pointer in ditches
@@masonthemason6412
So you lay block to a laser?
How do you determine height?
@@masonthemason6412
You shoot each corner..I assume.
Fair enough.
How do you keep the mortar from drying out so fast?
How much do charge to build foundation, 20'x50'
Hey mason. Great videos. I’m building a retaining wall 12 course high with 12” block. It’s has double #7 “L” every other cell single every other cell. Would you build leads 12 block wide or build half the wall and then lead again?
Most people build a 6 course lead so half the wall then lead again
dont you wet the blocks before cementing?
Классный ролик!! Интересные блоки у вас ,в нашей стране такие не распространены. Несьемная опалубка получается? Не подскажете а как у вас с кирпичной кладкой ? Или в основном все строится из подобных блоков?
good
New subscriber here, great how to videos. You are a good teacher brother. :)
After browsing your channel I'm wondering if you can point me to a video of yours or possibly make one describing the different types of block used, block sizes (length and height) etc. I see you use corner blocks, and different ones for finished edges and what not.. Can you please give a bit more detail for those of us planning a new builds and not sure which blocks to use? I'm looking to plan the length (without having to cut) before pouring the footing... I'm guessing a basic cinder block is 16 x 8? What are the corner blocks? Do you always use corner blocks?
I'm looking to build a very basic square above ground outhouse foundation.
Thanks!
Thanks! I’m not sure if I have a video explaining it. The corners need to be smooth so the smooth side goes on the corner.
Make sure your dimensions are 4 foot increments. 8,12,16,20,24 any of those measurements will make sure you have no cuts make sure you turn the block the right way so you don’t get a half in the wall
Wher is that mate Australia or usa?
why no trench mesh?
When installing the vertical rebar, will the drilling or hammering damage any of the rebar in the footer or the footer?
No, and no.
You might know how block is done, but you tend to omit alot of details around that part.
Um where is the rebar and wash off the cement what's going on here
We’re is the rebar
which video do better concrete or block, btw great tips
I’ll do that, thanks!
Great could you just zoom your camera in closer please sir ?? Good job thanks for teaching us
When do you have to add sand/gravel and compact the footing?
I’m confused. The footing is concrete. Are you taking about backfilling
Under the footing you don't want to disturb like backhoe teeth loosing compact hard soil
Before the blocks how the foundation was treated in order to set the blocks over a very strong settlement.
No footing ? No rebar ?Are you a contractor?
The blocks were laid onto a concrete base.
Vertical soupost to be #4 rebar on 32" oc
Great video! Are you laying block on concrete or just dirt? I'm wondering how you get the base of your ditch level.
On concrete. I use a laser level
Anyone help? I have a question. Are block corners essential to the strength of the structure.
I'm learning, and am going to build a 10x15ft garden office. I'm thinking of doing to two parallel walls for the length, and only a block and a half on the corners. I'm likely going to use vertical rebar at the corners. And frame the width walls.
Should be just fine, rebar with grout should be more than enough for that. Pretty common to have door openings with very small measurements.
Mason, let me ask you
What is a good material to use for practice mortal?
Real mortar
Lime mortar dude, by the way HS not a mason, suppose to be a bricky
@@nickluce2617 Bricklayers are masons too.
Like mortar 1 bag lime 18 shovels of sand or something like that I forget. It’s been so many years since I was in trade school
Do you use mortar or cement for the blocks ?
Mortar
Cement is in mortar and concrete. Mortar is used between the joints, and concrete is poured into the cores.
All these comments must be from high schoolers
What happened to the cement foundation for the Block ? you're just spreading cement on dirt ! If it rains and the ditch fills up with water and dissolves the clay layer and you're trying to attach blocks to Mud ?
There's a concrete footer under the layer of dirt. He's said so in several comments.
How much a block, do you charge
No one charges by the block that I know of. You charge by the job.
We don't do it like that here in Jamaica
Be warned that this does not show you how to avoid taking your eye out on exposed steel bars.
Agree. In my farm world I have yellow plastic caps I put on the fence ("star stake") uprights. Similar things show up on building sites for exposed re-bar ends. They are cheap, and, in construction, you can pull them off for reuse when they are safely below line or otherwise covered. Way less scary to work with and watch. 🥴
Mud don't stick on to dirt
Hello fellow mason's we need to have mason's follow proper code and rebsr specs your supposed to di it the right way, it looks like there isn't ginnabe a building inspector but the building inspector won't know about the cutting corners on the drilling I the footing anything over 4ft must be engineered
You know codes are different everywhere depending on the natural landscape and weather
@@greasyiphone642 yes I studied the codes and I went to a vocational school for 4 years and I've been trained buy union mason's carpenters and electrician s but I studied the national building codes and regarding the different locations your reference to its the frost line , in different state because of weather temperature variables the code for footing s is deeper then some depending on what your building. I do my home work before any job ,I've done and worked in all kinds of jobs I learned in thr field.
Where is the footing?
You really need to use Rebar caps
Or pay attention...
I want to know where is your concrete footing you didn't pour a concrete footing so you can put the blocks on I don't think you know what you're doing
There's a footer under his blocks.
Meboy a inscribir a tú Canal cuenta conmi like
Where's the ground beam or matting Where are the wall bars where is the concrete pouring for the foundation!!??
Quit using your fist as a hammer you’ll pay for it in your older years just a little advice.
Dude, at least use a leaf blower (preferably a hose) to remove layer of dirt from footing. Common sense man. There is no connection whatsoever between your mortar and the concrete
Right 😂😂
It's just for instructional purposes. It'll be torn apart and rebuilt later
There was no dirt on the footing
@@masonthemason6412 No Dirt? No Rebar layout in footing either. For educational purposes and safety I assume .
@@masonthemason6412are you serious. As a man who does footing for a living. I can obviously see dirt on the footer.
Only been into concrete for about a month but I if I can tell this is lazy work I’m sure the average person can as well. Idk if you could pay me to live in a house with this level of a foundation.
Wtf!? No reinforce concrete 🎉footing to set the mortar and block on ? At least hit the compacted soil with some waterproofing; after you hit it with the leaf blower of course 😂😅😅😅

Free mason
I guess foundation footing is not a thing where you're from. That wouldn't pass inspection where I'm from. We usually have 12 mm dia bar reinforces concrete footing that's tied into the existing structure. Guess anyone can make a video teach total garbage. Matar on dry earth, makes sense.
The only thing I'd add to these vids is a little time explaining why you're doing things the way you are. Why is it important not to get rocks in your base layer? Why 5 blocks in the corners if you're going 5 blocks high? Knowing why a person is doing something, rather than just what, helps people understand and remember and reduces the risk of people cutting corners.
i wouldnt mention how to do it the right way with epoxy and then state you don't do it the right way. just sayin
Inch of dirt in footing lol
You forgot to use a square in the corner 😢😅😊
No need for it.
Duct tape over the top of the rebar.
у нас так даже туалеты не строят . хотя бы армирующую подушку сделал под основание блоков.
boot lol 2 inchnheadn joints no good bro
Don't do that, always use epoxy, that doesn't have proper tension strenght.
He is wearing a cap
Dude u shouldn’t be pounding on the block like that lmao that’s how u crack em u don’t lay with a hammer !!??!?
Knows just enough to be dangerous
I know enough to do the job right and teach others to do satisfactory work. I never did anything that failed, not once. I’m not the best but I so the job right.
If you are going to instruct people you should use the right terms. It is a footing not a footer.
Wow. Big difference by just changing the ending. It’s the same thing bud
walls without foundations ? Nice , are those woke walls ?
What are you talking about? There's a concrete footer under the blocks he's laying.
@@da324 It looks to me like it was dirt , cos it isnt clean . I saw later that he drilled holes for rebars , so its concreta and its my BAD , I made mistake . In my country , concrete is grey , like those block , not red-ish like dirt , that trick me
Slop
Wtf is this lol
Very poor workmanship here

hey Mason, what state do you work in? I could use some help in southern California with a new hillside construction foundation. or do you know anyone out in my area? thanks in advance
