Inside an Amish Variety Store

  • Walk through an Amish variety store with me. I recently dropped by King's Kountry Store in Halifax County, Virginia. Owned by my Amish friends Bennie Ray and Mary Ann King. I always have a great time when I go see them. This is a nice store with lots of Amish-interest items, but also things for the general public as well.
Both Amish & non-Amish visitors are welcome to this store. Details:
    King’s Kountry Store
    1211 Hunting Creek Road
    Nathalie, VA 24577
    434-349-9425
    Hours: 8 AM - 5PM
    Open- Mon-Tues; Thurs-Sat
    CLOSED- Wed, Sun
    More: amishamerica.c...
My name is Erik Wesner and I'm not Amish. Back in 2004, I met the Amish while selling books. Since then, I've visited 5,000+ Amish homes & dozens of Amish communities. I run the Amish America website. More: amishamerica.com/

2 points - 1) First video I've done like this, and I went through the store a bit faster than I'd have liked
. My bad - I'll try to slow down on the next ones. You can drop the speed setting to 0.5 or 0.75 to slow it down👍
    2) This store gets a good number of both Amish and non-Amish customers.
On this visit, there was an Amish woman there doing some shopping. She had come with a non-Amish driver.
This is a really nice example of an Amish variety store. These stores reflect what the local Amish buy and use, and also their local Ordnung (church regulations). Some stores will be plainer, and have less of a selection than others. For example, I am visiting Amish in Colorado right now. Today I went to a MUCH simpler variety store. It was more of a bulk food store with very limited fabrics, clothes and other items, and more bare shelves. It probably had 1/10th of what King's has.

Yes. You are right that every Amish stores is base on what they are allow to have. I noticed more fabric choices and scooters. Some Amish communities ban bicycles and scooters. I am surprised of the pictures on the corn hole box.

Yes definitely. Our local Amish in Northern MN have a small variety store. They have most any bulk bakery item homemade ointment/salves, soap making ingredients, cheese and then once winter hits they have meat. The colony here does not use a generator. The store stays very cool in the summer and not quite freezing in the winter. They have old non working deep freezes outside that they use to keep meat in. In ND where I live there are no Amish but we have a large population of Hutterites. There is a small colony of Mennonites but that is closer to the Canadian border.

That’s fun to watch! I got excited seeing the drying racks. I feel a story coming on so… back several years ago, I had driven an unmarried group of girls to do Christmas shopping in Leola, PA. They directed me to a specific store and while I was waiting outside I watched multiple customers exiting the store with the biggest and substantially built clothes drying racks that I had ever seen. When I got home, I told my husband how amazing these dryers were. Bless his heart, that is what Santa put under the tree for me that year. Still have it and still use it. Placed by the wood stove it will hold an entire large load of laundry. Good memories!

The local store has bulk food, hats, socks, canning supplies , fabric and a good selection of meats and cheeses. They have a discount for meat/cheese for church. They also give a small discount if you buy for benefit auction gifts. (In East Central Ohio)

I had to call the office in Alabama and my cell service was no good. I asked about using a phone. Guess what.
I had to walk a mile through a corn field to get to a small phone booth under a covering....it was funny.....never made a phone call from the middle of a corn field before or since.

Her & her husband buy meats & cheeses to enjoy at their cabin. TFS 👍

I was trying to find some canning jars in August of 2020 and this is the only place I could get them! My husband doesn't care for Lehman's anymore because they don't actually sell hardware these days. They've become a store mainly for the tourists. What are your thoughts on the toy gun at 5:40 ? I understand that some non-Amish may shop here. I wouldn’t have expected that on their shelves though.

Ignorant question I know, but is the Ausmund in German or in English? Do you even know? I would love to get a copy if it was in English or a translation into Russian. I assume since this is in the states or Canada that it would be in English, but then again the Amish are kind of secluded from the outside world, which I don’t blame them, they do fascinate me though even if they practice Christianity differently then the orthodox. I think I have seen a amish buggy going around in town but it could just be a farmer down here in Tennessee. I never got to speak with them. I am sure they didn’t want to be bothered. I am sure it could of been one since a amish group is about 10ish miles from me.

Sure, it is in German. You can order it online I am pretty sure, or pick one up at an Amish store, should be under $10 in Amish stores

There is a handy map of local Amish businesses they have available there at this store - I'm going to do a video on it in a week or so. There are a dozen or so other businesses in this community
