Amish Woman Gives (Surprising) Furniture Store Tour

  • I got a tour of an Amish furniture store in Ohio. The store was really nice & also contained a number of surprises.
The place is owned by Emery & Rachel Miller. Emery had to run, but Rachel shows me around the store. About halfway through I'm surprised to find out where the couple lives. A furry friend appears and I see some unexpected furniture styles.
The store is Four Mile Furniture in Jackson County, Ohio. Here's the address:
    6003 Four Mile Road
    Jackson, OH 45640
(Note: this appears to be the address for the location next to the bakery (red barn). The shop featured in this video is just up the road - ask at this location or the bakery for directions.)
The community is also known for its bakery and greenhouse. It's not the largest Amish community, but a friendly place and worth visiting.

I want that nightstand.. but I'd like a swing arm that my laptop can rest and when needed swing around onto the bed; think dentist light contraption.. I'd consider mounting a light underneath for reading small amounts from documents and provide indirect lighting for the room.

I have recently been referred to your site by my oldest son. Thank you for your efforts in making the Amish more understandable to "English" people. For six of the 10 years I lived in the US, my oldest children and I (widowed) lived in NW VA. After treating an Amish child at hospital for some weeks, we all developed a friendship with the Amish community in Oakland. My son and I visited often (though my daughter only once). We both speak German (as a 4th or 5th language), so also attended Sunday service a few times. Our high-church Anglican/Episcopalian style of worship was very different, of course, but our Faith united us. My 10-16 yr old son made close friends with an Amish agemate (Kilian), and they still communicate today, almost 30 yrs later. Indeed, my son has visited from his BC home several times over the years, and he and his oldest boys stayed there for a fortnight just before Covid. Whenever I visit my friends in VA, I make sure to see my Oakland friends too, though my transatlantic flying days are now over, so it will be keeping in touch via snail mail from now on. Thank you again. May you and all whom you love have a blessed Christmas.

Hi Erik, this was another great video! I'm a quilter, so my husband and I go down to the Holmes County area quite often, just for a day or maybe 2. We live in northwest Ohio, next to Lake Erie. We bought a beautiful kitchen table down there a few years ago. It's made of reclaimed barn wood with chunky square legs. Everyone who sees it, loves it. This table is very sturdy and we use it every day.

I'm a contractor in southern Indiana. I have worked with a great many Amish and met their families. Many Amish women I have met struck me as very smart and conscientious. Also quite beautiful. I'll never forget this one gal I worked with when I was much younger. She was drop dead gorgeous. She would make excuses for us to look at cabinets in the warehouse. One time she led me to the back of the shop, we turned a corner and she stopped looked up at me and leaned in. I couldn't help myself and I kissed her the longest kiss. She looked up at me and said "I've wanted to do that for a long time" I told her I felt the same way but it could never work. She hung her head down and said "I know but I wanted one kiss" I pulled her close and held her for a few moments. I saw her several times again and she would always make an excuse to talk to me but things never went anywhere. She got married and had a family and I would always tell her how lucky she was to have such a beautiful family and that her life worked out perfect for her. Once I told her that and she just smiled and said "we'll always have that one kiss". I told her "I often wonder how we could have ever made it work"

Very cool! It's pretty neat that they live in an apartment behind the shop itself. Just like traditional businesses were operated until the mid-20th century. There are so many former businesses in my hometown attached to homes in the back, or on the ground floor with the living space upstairs. A lot of them look like typical pioneer shop fronts, with the tall plain facade. They're listed in the late 1800s and early 1900s city directories, naming the kind of business -- produce sellers, meat markets, which were not the same as butcher shops, but there are some of those, too, and dry goods, and general stores. Every neighborhood had at least one shop, but most had at least 3 separate shops within a few blocks. And the owners all lived in the business, upstairs or behind it. Nowadays they've all been converted into dwellings, either joined to the rest of the home, or made into an apartment. The stores downtown have mostly been turned into office space, or restaurants, but the living apartments upstairs have always been lived in. When it was no longer common for shop owners or managers to live above the downtown shops, they were converted into cheap apartments. Within about the past 10 years it's become fashionable for wealthier people to live in that kind of space, and the rents went bananas, up to $5,000/month just for an open floor like the apartment Emery and Rachel have, except upstairs. I knew someone who went "upscale" to live in one. All I will say is that I think it'd be neat to live like that if it's over my own business, but I wouldn't pay that kind of rent just for that kind of apartment.

    1. How/Where do the Amish get their news?
    2. Why did the Amish stop using technology with that specific time? How did they determine where to stop or what they could or couldn’t use?
I hope that I don’t sound silly asking these questions. I’m just wondering, and I want to learn. Thanks.
