Fellow uruguayan here. Oh boy, where do I start? Uhmm...thanks for making a video about Uruguay, I guess...but every single point was incorrect.
1- Disrespecting the national football team. Well, this applies to every country in the world. Not only with football, but anything locals are passionate about. Specially when it comes to sports. More "disrespectful" would be to insult big clubs like Peñarol or Nacional. Not so much with the national team.
2- The "ok" sign. I believe you are thinking of Brazil. This is false. We just simply don't use this gesture, we give a "thumbs up" like in many other countries. On the contrary, when you don't know something, the gesture presented was partially correct. Very few people do it though. The majority just raises and then lowers their shoulders like many other countries.
3- About the toothpick, totally false and stupid. Most restaurants has toothpicks on the table. Nobody cares if you use it.
4- Reading a newspaper while eating. Really?? It's 2024. Its been ages since the last time I saw somebody reading a newspaper. Like everywhere else, everybody is on their phone or whatever. Meal is not sacred. You could argue on Sundays when the family usually gets together. But being on your phone while eating is not taboo, it's just rude.
5- About clothing, yeah. Could be or at least makes more sense. Keep in mind, Uruguay is not a tropical country.
6- About Mate, well...for starters the pronunciation. That "mait" caught me really off guard. A simple Google search would provide you with the correct pronunciation. It is true that there is certain etiquette when drinking mate. But if you decline, nobody will care. The only thing that it is true and wasn't mentioned is, if you do drink, do not touch the bombilla (metal straw). Unless you know what you are doing. If not, people might get annoyed. Also, as a nitpick, most of the pictures shown are not from "mates" we use here in Uruguay. This also applies to pictures with indegineous people that looked from Paraguay or Bolivia. FYI there are no indegineous people here in Uruguay.
7- Well spitting seems pretty obvious. Nobody likes that. Nevertheless, like in many other countries, it's pretty common here among male population. Gross? Yes. Taboo? No. If you do it, nobody will care.
8- We do compete a lot with argentinians because of football. But we share the same culture and we have many things in common. It's more of a love/ friendly competition type of relation.
9- Pointing at someone? Really? Not sure where did you took this information from. This is just stupid. Not taboo, just rude like anywhere else. If you know the person, point to your hearts contempt. If not, well it would be a bit rude but definetely not taboo like the video claims.
10- And this was the reason why I wanted to leave this comment. I mean, I don't want to sound like a broken record, but this applies to every corner in the world. Doesn't matter if it's another country or your own. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Simple as that. But it's stupid to think that this is a big no no than only applies to Uruguay or that we have a big appreciation for the ocean like we were mermaid people or something lol.
11- Smoking indoors is the only one 100% accurate. Congrats!
In conclusion. Again, great to see a video about my country. But it was very poorly researched, most pictures/ clips used were not even from Uruguay or uruguayan people and almost all of the points presented as taboo were untrue or just applied to most countries in the world. There are far better researched videos about Uruguay. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. Cheers.

Thank you for setting the record straight. Nowadays, it's not always easy to tell whether or not what one sees online is true or not. We need people like you who know the real scoop to tell us whether what we just saw is true or not.

I like everything I have heard up to this point I’m 70 years old. All these things I was taught when I was a boy these are common sense things that parents are supposed to teach their children. I am still a smoker. I do agree that it is a bad habit I have a smoked since I was 11. I grew up in a generation where everyone smoked that’s not an excuse every generation adopts something is some way from the last, but anyone I do mean anyone who condemn me socially for smoking really out of check their own stuff out and don’t be so self-righteous. I do not litter with my cigarette butts. I’m very conscientious of smoking downwind and I do enjoy going to a restaurant or flying on a plane it’s not filled with smoke and then if you want to bring legality into the smoking thing that sounds a little like a dictatorship to me, when you go down that road, it won’t be long till you start making laws for small infractions some people just need to be more understanding there are ignorant people out there And selfish with someone tells me my smoke is bothering them. I don’t mind as long as they ask me nicely but when they get in my face then it’s a different story. I’m not trying to turn the other cheek but Paraguay sounds awesome. I agree with their test it’s common sense.

not me watching this video and seeing myself in it... Is it not polite to ASK people before using their faces in your youtube videos? 15:20? It was from our wedding day haha, also I feel like you're being very dramatic with this list, from someone who has lived here for a long time, i wouldn't even think about half of these. Also check your pronunciation of mate, its not like m8, its more like ma te

Hi, Uruguayan here this video is full of misinformation, many of the "taboos" listed on it are part of social norms everywhere. We see someone spitting in public as disrespectful as every other country I guess.
About the mate, yeah it's not hygienic at all, it's an old tradition and was common to share even with strangers, nowadays people don't share as much, but nobody is frowned upon for declining if offered. I personally like to drink it but only share with my significant other.
