XJ Wouldn’t Start - Changing CPS Sensors

- Hey everyone!! Don’t worry, I don’t actually hate my XJ. It’s a great Jeep! But after treating myself to a new toolbox it decided it wanted some attention lol. A new camshaft and crankshaft position sensor later and it is fixed. Thanks for watching and I promise I will get around to some JK install videos soon! I used to work at Ford. They have a cam sensor and synchronizer similar to the Jeep. The synchronizer may have bad bushings allowing it to spin erratic and take out the sensor. If you get a bird chirping noise from the sensor I would change out the synchronizer to. To avoid having another sensor damaged. Love your videos always a good watch.
Thanks! I’ll be sure to listen out for that. I checked for play in the synchronizer and didnt notice any, but things are different once it heats up and starts spinning

i just did mine on a 99 and it was not as bad as i thought. i was able to reach my hand down from the top to take out the bolts and to start them. i had to break them free from the bottom and take them out from the top. i suggest take out the front drive shaft there is so much room just reach up there and take them off.
that cam shaft sensor was a crazy satisfying repair. i mean how RARE is it that you take the defective part off and you can physically see what is broken with the part. That thing was busted.

A Multimeter is your friend. Unplug it and check it before you spend a $100.00 on something you don't need. Just a tip not ragging on you. Love the videos keep them coming.
The weird thing is that I did test it, and it showed abnormal readings (not fully bad but also not a good reading). I know these sensors can be tricky to test with a meter so I figured it was worth a shot to just change it. Didn’t have much time to spend on troubleshooting, I have videos to make!! Haha

I changed the crankshaft position sensor on my XJ and had a small problem. The bolts kept falling out of the socket as I tried to get them up to the new sensor. I dipped the heads of the bolts in heavy grease and they stayed in the socket. I hope this helps people with the same issue.

I had to change the crankshaft position sensor when I first got my JKU. It would stall under low throttle conditions.

Mine was the camshaft sensor too. Yay Cherokee is better now

JK Gear and Gadgets just went bad but mines a little different being a 99 what year is yours?

When you're in a bind for a socket, next time take the next larger size and put it in a vice and squeeze it to fit. Not on it's sides but end to end. As it compresses it will become a smaller size. Check often as you do this to not go to far. Don't know how good this will work on cheap Chinese sockets. By the way the 32 sizes were common back in the day and match up closely with a lot of metrics.

I had this same problem 2 weeks ago, no codes except misfires, I thought is was the Crank sensor, turns out it was water in the gas, draind the tank , added new gas and bam back on the road, just my 2 cents
It’s okay your crank position sensor was gonna fail soon anyway.
Yep, I can’t be mad. Better to happen close to home opposed to in the middle of nowhere

Great! However go ahead and get the lubelocker! I hit my diff cover on my last trip and it’s leaking from the rtv

Quick question about your great video- what's the diagnosis on that xj engine tic?
This one had a cracked head and coolant hurt the rod bearings some. Was going to change the engine whenever it died, but it never did. Just kept ticking along forever
It will fix itself if you dump gas on the engine and accidently drop a match 😳

What’s the lift and tire combo on the xj?
2.5” Spacer lift on saggy springs so probably 2”, and 30s

I changed the first part you changed. Still doesn’t work. It stays on for 5 seconds and turns off. Ugh!!! Help me. It’s a 2001 XJ 4.0
In most cases you can disconnect the cam sensor and your pcm will guess off the crank sensor and it will run and you can drive it out of a trail but, it has horrible timing and you shouldn’t run it like that for a while
I tried that and it still wouldn’t start. It think it was broke too much lol

Quick question I bought the part and I just plugged in the sensor and zip tied it on top. Where you insert the the bolts on the Jeep is that supposed to be some sort of grounding mechanism?

I don’t think it is a grounding function. However it needs to stay very still. Why did you zip tie it?
Because my bolts are super rusted the whole Jeep is rusted underneath.
