  • ~ A beautiful moment from an amazing movie~ I love the contrast between Mizore and Nozomi. In this movie they seem to switch their roles discovering the darkness and the true light that is within each of them. ~

Nozomi is thanking Mizore not just for liking her, but for liking her as Nozomi, and not for her flute. Nozomi is hurt by not being special on the flute and by how she eventually would not be by Mizore´s side because of that.
Nozomi was thinking they only could be together if she was as good as Mizore. But when Mizore says what she likes about Nozomi, excluding the flute, she makes her realize that is no longer the music the only thing that connect them.
That´s is why Nozomi starts laughing. All her struggles were meaningless all the time. Their bond got so strong that not even the music that united them can break it.

@@briannacallie9419 that's too simplistic and black and white thinking. The film ends with Nozomi asking Mizore to wait for her to get better at playing her flute which could be interpreted as Nozomi asking for some time and space to reciprocate her feelings. A rather common trope repackaged in a different way.

I read an absolutely heartbreaking analysis of this scene written by someone else. As Mizore is confessing everything she loves about Nozomi, watch Nozomi's expression starting at around 5:00. She realizes something, and then she interrupts Mizore by saying "I love your oboe," in a strangely emotionless tone. Then there's an awkward silence as her worst fears are confirmed; Mizore doesn't say "I love your flute" afterwards. She doesn't say anything at all. Nozomi's body language at 5:12 says it all, as a mutual understanding passes between them that Mizore is the more talented one after all, and that Nozomi was holding her back.
Nozomi then laughs; I think she's beginning to make sense of this realization, and her own complicated feelings of affection and protectiveness towards her friend that's in tension with her own inherent stubbornness and competitiveness.
Anyways this scene is so well done and it breaks my heart, I just want Lesbian Mizore Yoroizuka to be happy in the end T_T

actually i had a different interpretation for this scene. After Mizore said she liked Nozomi's everything, i think in that instant Nozomi understood that while for her Mizore was the blue bird that she had to let go, to Mizore, the blue bird, the special one, was all along Nozomi herself. That's why after, without hesitation, she says she likes Mizore's oboe. It was like telling: No! the blue bird, the special one was Mizore empathizing her talent which is also the reason she will fly away from her. I think this is also why she starts laughing and you can see she feels better knowing that they were thinking the same thing about each other as a special person.

    • @ViriYva
      @ViriYva Před rokem +25

You all should remember "Liz love the blue bird so much. Liz will let the blue bird fly away and give her freedom"
Nozomi replying with emotionless "I love your oboe" is actually deeper than what ppl think. It's about how she want to set Mizore Free. At this scene. Referring to they relate to "Liz and Blue Bird" book. They come into understanding that Mizore is actually the blue bird and Nozomi (Liz) is actually the one who caged mizore all this time (because personal feeling). So by replying "I love your oboe" after Mizore confess all her feeling, it means Nozomi want Mizore to chase her True dream on music instead of staying with Nozomi, who is now realize that she will never reach Mizore level (After find out that Mizore keep holding back at their previous practice so Nozomi can keep up with their duo rhythm. And sensei give ONLY Mizore university recommendation)
It's then showed Nozomi borrow "Ordinary University Exam" book on the library, implying she already gave up on music and instead going to ordinary university for Mizore sake (Nozomi know Mizore might just holding back again if they keep being together, so Nozomi choose this path)
And the other side Mizore practicing her Oboe, accepting sensei recommendation.
This whole movie show us they know each other really well. So Mizore silence after Nozomi told her "I love your Oboe" is actually Mizore answer. She grant Nozomi wish to set her free.

Nozomi told Mizore that she didn't remember too well the first time they talked, but right after that she had a flashback to their first interaction. It's just a small detail but make me appreciate this movie more and more.

  • @HysteriainNirvana
    @HysteriainNirvana Před 2 lety +215

what i find amazing is how their relationship is detailed in the smallest of things.
the tale of liz and the blue bird is a metaphor for what the future had in hold for them, how mizore would go away with her talent and how nozomi didn't want to let go, didn't want that to happen. she just wanted the two of them to be the same as always. she had always been walking forward (as it is shown during the movie, constantly) with mizore following behind.
but this scene is beautiful, not just because of the love it pours, but because the way nozomi reciprocates the love confession is by...letting go. she lets mizore go, which is what is the best for her. she accepts the difference between them, and lets go, wishing the best for her. and that...is also a love confession, in a way.
and she laughs, because its relieving. "it was that simple, wasn't it? it's true, isn't it?" accepting it lets her love mizore.
but the most incredible detail of all is how, when nozomi says "i love your oboe", there is a shot of the windows, and you can see a bird fly.
she let mizore free, she let the blue bird fly.
and you know what? she is not the only one who flies, because, right after the confession, when they are shown walking towards the library to study -- walking to the future, both their long, *blue* skirts...flap in the air, just like a birds wings.
i love this movie so much. and i love naoko yamada, shes a wonderful director

Well yeah throughout out the entire movie (and some scenes in the anime) Nozomi never once lets Mizore speak. She rambles on about things that Mizore doesn't even know or care about and Mizore just listens. It's very one sided on that way. One person can't get any words out while the other never understands her.

I enjoy everyone thoughts on this scene much better than how I was thinking about it.
I felt like Nozomi didn't really care about what Mizore had to say at all. And did the bare minimum to navigate the through and out of an awkward situation that in her mind she'd already dodged once.
I like Nozomi, she's a good person but she's seems pretty shallow at the same time. I see Mizore as a very shy and introverted person that spilled her guts and said things most people couldn't begin to imagine saying to their face. And her response was laughter and 2 or 3 thank yous.
I felt so bad for her😢
She could have done better than that.
"You know, Mizore I've had a feeling that you liked me a lot for a long time now. I never said anything because I didn't know how I would respond if you ever actually got the courage to tell me how you really felt," Nozomi let's out a sigh. "Well here we are and I still don't know what to do. I guess I can start by telling you what I'm feeling. I'm mad and embarrassed that you out performed me by leaps and bounds and now I have to work like crazy to keep up with you in the third movement. I feel lost because I don't know what I want to do after high school and... I don't know. I'm happy you care so much for someone like me. I love you for that. But I don't have a high opinion of myself so I don't know how to respond to your feelings properly. I need some time to think. Can we talk about this another time?"

I felt so bad for Mizore too and also thought that Nozomi laughing and pulling herself away from the situation felt like a rejection. Mizore was talking about all the things she loved about Nozomi but she in return says she loved her oboe, and I interpreted that as her deflecting that outpouring of affection/confession.
Looking at everyone else's thoughts though, I like those interpretations more too.

Toyama: She chose to move forward into the future, so I think Nozomi is making progress as well. However, that refreshing feeling is not a normal one. Even though her favorite Mizore, who is not very talkative, gives Nozemi good points with all her words, Mizore doesn't include the flute Nozomi cherished. So Nozomi can only laugh. When she says "thank you," it is not a sincere thank you, but rather a "that's enough". So I feel that Nozomi chose to move forward while giving up.

But I was impressed that they did not really come to the exact same conclusion. Nozomi takes the blue bird out of the cage because she wants Mizore's musical talent to spread its wings. However, Mizore thinks she has no choice but to fly away "because Liz (Nozomi), whom she loves, told her to do so. I thought this was a wonderful piece of work, because I understood that Mizore was flying not for the sake of music, but for the sake of her love for Nozomi.
Tanezaki (Mizore's VA) : In the end, their feelings for each other never cross over. They only thought the same thing at the very end when they said, "Let's go for the show," but other than that, I think they were looking at different directions.

While this is an amazing and beautiful scene, it is not complete. Nozomi responds to Mizore's confession at the very end of the work.
Just before The End, Nozomi and Mizore are walking home together in the usual fashion with Nozomi leading in front and Mizore behind her when suddenly Nozomi stops and spins back towards Mizore who then has this amazing look on her face, and then the screen goes dark. This ending is very enigmatic! What does Nozomi do to cause Mizore to have such a surprised and happy look on her face? After playing this scene over many, many times, my theory is that Nozomi kisses Mizore on the right cheek. I would like to hear what others think is going on here.

I have since this comment reanalyzed the ending. I reduced the video to it's basic frames, and stepping through the motion of Nozomi's head as it moves towards Mizore, I believe there is a frame missing. Frame to frame, Nozomi moves towards Mizore's right cheek, and then suddenly, her head is moving back with the surprised look on Mizore's face. If you mentally add in a frame where Nozomi actually does kiss her on the right cheek, the frame to frame motion seems reasonable and there is no sudden change in motion of the head.

There are no words and Mizore has this sudden surprised reaction on her face. If you repeat the experiment which I mention above, I think you will see what I am talking about. And in any case, a kiss on the cheek is a sign of affection which these two obviously have for each other. In my culture, men and women kiss on the cheek as a sign of affection and is not sexual.

This movie is about how 2 friends feel about each other and their standing in their lives, using the story "Liz and the Blue Bird" as told in the movie as a comparison and accompanying musical piece. Its a fantastic film and makes you examine yourself, self worth, and whether you idolize someone maybe too much and how they feel about you.
