- #PrayForKyoani The recent turn of events is tragic, and in my part, very devastating. Hibike! Euphonium is one of Kyoto Animation works that touched my heart, the series that me feel more human. I felt warmth that I rarely felt in real life. I met friends that have the same values and perspective with me. I started learning music theory, learning Japanese, start gaining back motivation. It changed me in lots of aspect, and not a word is enough to express how I owe them. For now, I want to express my deepest gratitude and respect to the staffs who passed away.

This scene alone put this anime in my top 5. It's really hard to capture what it's really like to say goodbye to your best friends like that, but this anime did that and everything leading up to it perfectly. It also captured how important those people become in all of our subsequent actions with that last line "I'll never forget how warm it sounds" in reference to Kumiko's desire to let Asuka live and play vicariously through her. All of this following some of the most emotionally impactful musical performances I've seen in real life or in entertainment(namely Asuka's solo performance of Sound! Euphonium in one of the prior episodes). Drama is only negative if it doesn't make you cry, and you're lying if you said this scene doesn't make you cry. Worth every second of watch time just to get to this moment.
100% agreeable. Also, crying foes not always mean that you are sad, but it's a mixture of so many feelings I've seen so many anime with graduation ceremonies, but HE, this scene more specifically comes at the very top!
agree, tho. a shock effect making one "cry" doesn't necessitate the drama being of a high pedigree rather it is often the reverse exploiting section of a fanbase with subpar writing

I actually love that Kyoani studio is good at making these concepts of someone graduating in a school , The other best example of this is K-on where they played a song for Asuza.

The way Asuka puts her hands down after Kumiko said she didn't like her, and her expression looked genuinely hurt. After wiping a tear from her eye, she proceeds to put on that happy front that she always had, until Kumiko says that she likes her, which catches her off guard. So much attention to detail in just a few minutes

I love this anime so much. So many people I talk to just watch the clips that are on CZcams, the sad ones and the KumikoxReina, and they say this is Yuri bait trying to get you emotional. But when you actually watch the two seasons in order and think about the characters and yourself, this is actually a very relatable moment. You’re having to graduate and you’ll miss all of your friends, and they’ll miss you. But there is some light in the darkness, as seen by Kumiko getting the notebook
Cant agree more. This anime is way more than just a yuri bait. I feel bad that ppl hated on season 2 just bcuz all they care is rena and kumiko. Besides, after finishing both seasons, it’s clear enough that the relationship between rena and kimiko is friendship. Also the main theme of season 2 is also relatable and very touching. What I feel most amazing is that every character is so well portrayed and each of them have their own story. This is a fantastic anime with good characters development
Yeah, people who are only after the yuri ship are retards; instead of watching it because of the relationships, bonds, and friendships of the character, they all get selfishly attached to yuri pairings. Normally this is how girl relationships are, coming from my environment around them.

I love asuka and kumiko's relationship dynamic....the fact that this arc also has mamiko's past revealed i feel like kumiko saw asuka as the big sister that she always wanted to play with since kumiko never got the chance to play with her real sister. With all the acting like an adult and saying they know everything even tho mamiko and asuka are both just high schoolers too.
And now, kumiko barely fixed her relationship with mamiko and barely got close with asuka, but kumiko's gonna be left alone again cuz asuka is graduating and mamiko is off to her own new path...i feel so bad and sad im gonna cry again LMAO

It might make more sense in the book for Kumiko to be with Shuichi in the end, but I much prefer this version of the anime. No it's not because I think Kumiko wants to be in a relationship with Asuka, but because it's just so damn perfect. Hieko Yamada made it clear she wanted to show a genuine relationship with girls, not a traditional Yuri like some would argue, and this scene proves it. It still gets me everytime when she says I love you, and we see Asuka's reaction...
Such a shame I can't like a comment many times.
Thing is, there was never any Yuri to begin with. Just really meaning friendships and bonds based on camaraderie.
Asuka really help Kumiko grow as a person, so it only makes sense she would find a deep admiration for her upperclassman, and that feeling is far more meaningful and relatable to me than the fetishized lesbian relationships people call "yuri".
But don't you worry, Shuichi is going to have his moment. It wouldn't make sense for it to happen in the show, because there were only hints of his relationship with Kumiko and how she felt about him. So yeah, this ending was fantastic and I love it.
The only problem I see with Kumiko's and Shuichi's relationship is that it seems kind of out of place for a series that talks about friendship or love between females the way it does,it just didn't seem fitting that in the end Kumiko would choose to be with her male childhood friend.They have chemistry,but seems to be more like a real friendship thing than a romance,due to how different Kumiko acts around people she could actually like, such as Reina or Asuka,even when she has a lot of admiration for them.

hits different when you re watch this after seeing season 3 where kumiko is behaving the same composed and calm way as asuka. Asuka's legacy is there always even after she leaves the show.

Seriously, the movie about kumiko's second year is an answer to 3:23 "I want to play like you".
Such an impactful line here to connect the stories, and the answer is there at the beginning and the end of the movie when Kumiko plays the song "hibike euphonium", by the fact that she has improved so much. And the question is raised again that is it worth it to put so much time and effort on sth that does not guarantee return and surely it might not be the most significant thing in your life in the long term, then what's the meaning behind all this?
But at the end of the day, isn't that motivation like "i want to play like you" be enough to just do sth you want to achieve?
Anyway, I love it, this anime brings us to the journey of discovering Kumiko's passion for euphonium, regardless is it meaningful or not, she is getting closer to the person she wants to be. In this sense, I think her story is relatable to many ppl, or at least inspiring ppl to think more or less about their passion.

“Goodbyes” are the end to a story, “see you” means that the story has yet to end.
I’m glad I found this anime. It’s quickly climbed to be one of my favourite anime - maybe even my favourite.
It’s made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. I was shocked to see Taki silently remove Kumiko from the Euph section, and then bring her back on as he saw her determination. I cried whenever Kumiko broke into tears, and I relate to this ending.
I’ve been in that situation both ways, and it’s painful both ways too. I tend to not say goodbyes, because I hate goodbyes.
And as somebody who thrives off of music, I was really really glad I found this anime. I don’t know about you but I kinda wanna play the euphonium even though I’m better at piano

Asuka was the reason I liked this anime so much, I really love this character, every scene with her was all best scenes for me, now that she's missing from S3 I feel that the magic is not there anymore... 😔

Just finished watching this show, I cried so much while watching it. Its kinda relatable to me in a way and feels hit me so hard
Asuka was my favorite character but Asuka became like the most tragic anime character in terms of character development (which isn't a bad thing). She never really trusts others and breaks out of her shell. She does obviously care for others but is unwilling to open up even until the very end. She sort of does with Kumiko only because she is able to read her and see the truth, but even then Asuka keeps things brief and avoids being honest. It's pretty sad and I've never seen an anime character like this before. It's so well written and you can't help but feel bad for how much she hides and covers up about her personal feelings.
I guess when they say " the one who smiles the most bears the heaviest burden".... They might be right....
Kumiko has two more years and then some if kyoani and the original author decide to take it past High school. Plenty of time for Asuka to become what you want from her. I would be all for this.
And at some point, all of us are like Asuka in a way
The last scene in this episode and episode 9 are so so well done! The animation, environment & most importantly the music. It’s hard for me to believe that Asuka who is only the supporting character would leave such a big impact for me at least. The last time i felt this way (longing feeling) was after watching the last episode of Your lie in april. I really wish we could see more of Kumiko & Asuka interactions (apart from the reunion in second year movie & that visiting part in the third year). Thank you Ayano Takeda & KyoAni!

Just came back to comment on this goated scene. When this was how the season ended, I wanted to see how Kumiko's story would unfold. Fast forward 7 years, and I will actually be able to see it in season 3. Kinda crazy.
All these characters, their moments, and this very segment felt extremely real. This is a brilliant show for the ages and I wish the whole world knew it.

This was such a beautiful ending it was only a few minutes but they made it feel like an eternity and they where able to convey the feelings between the two with just the animation of there face only ending after we figure out what the piece that feels so warm is called are we able to realize it’s over

I’m writing this in 2020 when the third season of this breathtaking anime has been announced. But even so I’ll always come back to this scene, it’s easily one of the best ones in the anime.
What happens nows on 2022 I still waiting
New anime projects announced. An OVA in 2023 and Kumiko's 3rd year to be animated in 2024.
Rewatching this after season 3, I'm reminded how important this piece is to Kumiko and why she would be protective of it, knowing that she would have to think really hard who to pass it on to.

ユーフォに全然知識が無い私は、つい最近になって配信で映画の一期二期、リズ～と誓いのフィナーレを観て作品の素晴らしさを知り、そして先日アンコンを観る事が出来ました。このアニメの素晴らしさを今さらですが知る事が出来てとても嬉しいです。テレビ版も一期から見直すともっと深い所まで誘われ、二期も見始めたらもう冒頭で号泣しました。これってあのラストシーン･･ここでもう使うんだ😭と。相変わらずな美しい伏線回収に涙が止まらなかったです。久美子とあすかの心が混じり合う二期が大好きです。
全部アニメ観たなら原作もおすすめするわ
原作読むとアニメでカットされたとことか、逆にアニオリで補完されたとことかわかって面白いよ

何かの記事で知りましたが作者の方がきちんと地元の言葉を使って物語を表現されているのが素敵ですね。アニメ｢誓い～｣や、アンサンブル(映画)まで拝見してあらためてユーフォは素晴らしいと思ったし(キャラがみんな愛しくなる)三期の新キャラも楽しみだし･･京都弁は美しいだけじゃなく、内に秘めた強い意志を表現出来る所が凄く魅力的に思います。ますます楽しみが増えました。ありがとうございます。

You know what is the most surprise out of everything? The voice actor of Asuka-senpai is actually Mugi-chan from K-ON ... I don't know that until recently and I thought that she voiced as Asuka-senpai is the most type of girl I can never get in this real life.

Same. Just came back to watching this scene... I've seen the show aages ago... and the moment when the music sets in just makes me cry. It's so heartbreaking to see. And Kumiko's way of genuinely expressing what she really wants and feels is so beautiful and admirable. Big respect to the voice actress too.
