  • I just upgraded the comms in my 2012 Jeep JK. I did my research, read a ton of reviews and decided on the Midland MXT575 GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) two-way radio.
I am NOT affiliated with Midland nor is this a paid endorsement. This is just my personal choice for my upgrade; I purchased all equipment personally and this video shows how I installed it in my 2-door jeep.
I am not an expert; your situation for running the wires and mounting the microphone & base unit may differ from my setup. Always consult an expert should you not feel comfortable performing the work yourself.
If you operate any GMRS radio, the FCC requires that you obtain a license. The fee is $35 for 10 years and it covers you and all members of your immediate family.
The link below shows you step by step what you need to do. This is the same link I used and it removes all of the guesswork!

Sweet setup! I like the fact that the main power unit is out of sight - out of mind. Thieves like easy to grab stuff and hiding the radio & microphone helps to keep sticky fingers away.

that's exactly why I love this unit - out of sight and easy to hide! Thanks for watching!

Looking into this midland or maybe 275, it's a great idea for mounting. Curious, does the jk have heat vents under he seat? I was concerned about locating under my front seat for that reason.

I thought about the 275 as well, the figured I'd get the most power I could. There are no heat vents under the seat, but I did use an existing metal "plate" for the mounting. I used the provided Midland, self-adhesive metal plate to attach to my hard top roof for the 1/4 wave antenna. That didn't work out because I ended up with leaks through the freedom panels that I'm still dealing with! That's why I went with the ghost antenna on the driver's fender. Thanks for watching!

and put the Mick in the glove box and the antenna in the trunk and no one is the wiser

Yep - I agree. I leave the ghost antenna on because it doesn't stand out anyway, but I do remove the mic and put it in the glove box.
