  • Dr. Lera talks about usage of Benadryl in dogs and whether it is worth it or not.
    Benadryl is a great medication for use in dogs with mild-to-moderate allergies. Seasonal allergies, food allergies, environmental allergies, and allergic reactions to snake and insect bites all respond to Benadryl in most cases. Benadryl is commonly used to treat itchiness in dogs caused by skin allergies, and it also reduces many of the other symptoms of allergies, including: hives , swelling and inflammation, redness, runny nose and eyes, coughing, sneezing and anaphylactic reactions. My labradoodle had a severe allergic reaction to bee bite and went into shock, I rushed him to the er vet and because I immediately gave him Benadryl the vet said it likely saved him! He spent 2 days in the hospital.

    My Beagle used to get shots for her allergies. I would give Benadryl here and there when needed. She was allergic to ragweed. poor hound. Lucky i got her. She was supposed to be a hunting dog. But they found out she can't hunt. I took her. They were going to put her out of her misery. She got shots very expensive. But she enjoyed live and was an inside family dog. Died aged 14. Although the vet was surprised she lived so long with all the shots and steroids. Rip Sammy.

    There is no #1 stoppage for dogs itching. I'm a pet owner not a vet but I'm right. I spent$500. last month on vet visits and meds... They helped, but it was a slow progress. It has to run it's course.

    My nursing yorkie had a severe alergic reaction after walking her out side. I think maybe something bit her. She started rubbing her face and then started to vomit. She drank a whole bunch of water after the episode. I got so scared a called a vet and he said to give her 3ml of children's benadryl. I was worried about the ingredients because it had sorbitol solution and sodium. Should I had given better a benadryl pill? If so how much of a pill for a 7 pound yorkie? A vet tech told me to cut it in four and give her 1 of the 4. Would this be correct? Also could this be a problem with calcium and not an alergic reaction.

    Is benedryl a good option for a dog that is difficult during nail trims? My groomer gave up trying to cut his nails and said I should try giving benedryl before bring him in. He's 75 lbs. Not sure much to give and if it will even work to make him drowsy enough to be handled

      I would say there's a small percentage of likelihood that the Benadryl is going to make it work for your dog if they are that stressed during grooming. You may need something stronger like trazodone and that may not even cut it either

    My dog has had the left side of his face swollen for three days now, we took him to the ven on Sunday they have him a shot and checked his eye since it’s swollen, his mouth is still swollen and he doesn’t move his left ear quite right. Changed his food today and gave him half a Benadryl. How long does this usually take to have an effect on swelling ?

    How much benadryl can i give to my dog?

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  Před 2 lety +3

      According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, the safe dosage is 2-4 milligrams of medication per kilogram of weight, or 0.9 to 1.8 milligrams per pound. This amount can be administered two to three times daily, depending on your dog's symptoms. this information was pulled from WebMD.com but I definitely recommend you talk to you veterinarian before administering medication so it's being used correctly.

      @DrLera  Před 2 lety +6

      Your veterinarian would be correct in administering the Benadryl for vaccine reactions. The short answer for whether or not Benadryl actually works applies more to seasonal allergies. If it wasn't made clear in the video about the distinction my apologies. Addendum: you may have missed the short 5 to 10 secs where I mentioned the usage of it for vaccine reactions towards the end of the video
