I was just in Kanazawa this month and it felt like there were almost no tourists. I am sure tourism will return soon, but we were able to get seats at restaurants that are normally very difficult and even were able to get last-minute tickets for Myoryuji (the reservation-only Ninja Temple). There were no lines or crowds anywhere.

@@blue_avocado4086 this also sounds like a valid option. The thing i will travel with my gf for 2 weeks starting in Osaka we will visit various towns and cities until we get up to Tokyo which will be our last destination. I don't even know if this would suit our traveling style since we were not "staying" more then 2 nights per city/town.

    • @blue_avocado4086

@@Ysafor, I used it for two weeks in Osaka, Koyasan, Nara, Kyoto, Takayama, Shirakawago, Kanazawa, Zao Onsen, Ginzan Onsen, and Tokyo. It was great and still more cost effective than a JR pass. Super-convenient. For the shinkansen, I was even able to link the tickets that I reserved online to my IC card, which gives you a small discount. The only place you could not use IC was the buses in Kanazawa, one rural train stop (which the ticket counter resolved quickly) and special-reservation buses (like the one to Shirakawa-go). And obviously, if you are riding limited express trains, you have to get the ticket for the special surcharge. If you're in the Osaka area, you may also want to look into the Kansai Thru pass, although I skipped it since the price was a wash with my particular itinerary.

@@Toshi-Guide-from-Japan The 24 hour JR Passes, then the Metro Tokyo mixed Toei 24 hour passes, combined are very good. Lots of "Sumemasen" for interrupting the flow of busy Tokyo transport users. I received many hurried bows even smiles. The big yellow boards with all the exit gate destinations make things so easy. Will the 2025 expo affect traveller numbers outside of the West Coast? I'm giving the West Coast a wide berth and have even adjusted my travel dates away from early October. Given that the building of the expo area has faced considerable delays, I am really hoping the dates do not get shifted.
The milder temperatures of Autumn and less chance of a high pollen count mean that I am tied to October-November as a season to travel. The return of the yen makes little difference to me as travelling to Japan is already expensive (I'm in NZ not the USA), having risen due to post-pandemic price rises. I'm trying to keep time in Tokyo to a minimum as it is riddled with tourist traps. I have three days in Tokyo (day trips not stays) and just cancelled plans for the new TeamLabs it takes too long to go through! Really disappointing, but it's the best part of a day and I do not have that kind of time.
