I LOVE this scene. Their frindship was true, pure unconditional love. Idgie was a force of nature but also a lost puppy.
everybody needs a friend like Idgie. With that type of toughness it is no wonder that men crushed on her, even if men were not in her lane, so to speak.
I had the biggest crush on her!!
Many HAVE or HAD friends like Idgie and they had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE in their lives. Mouthy girls like that have a spirit in them that is greater than their capacity to support it and generally result in OTHERS SUFFERING as a result of the troubles brought on by that spirit in Idgie! All throughout history men have DIED defending Idgies, or themselves as a result of siding with Idgies! Aside from diseases and modern warfare, I'd presume most men died as a direct result of the women in their lives! This isn't about her "right" do do or say whay she wants, it's about the REAL WORLD realities of KNOWING YOUR PLACE in a dog eat dog world! Anyone that disagrees or has no clue what I speak has simply NOT encountered the right junkyard dog yet! Count your blessings!
Idgie's entire appearance during the scene where she first visits Ruth at her home has me on my KNEES.
I saw this in the theater when I was 8 years old. When she walked up the steps with that short haircut, I gasped.
Drop dead gorgeous. The book was so wonderful, when I finished it I hugged it and cried for about a half hour.
Amazing book!!
Seeing this in the movie theater at 8 years old, sitting beside of my grandma... That memory alone lets me know there is a Heaven.

In fairness, the film doesn't make it at all clear that they're lovers. You could interpret their onscreen love either as a great friendship, or as a great romance. It's a testament to the quality of filmmaking that both narratives work so well.
Does it really matter? That's unconditional love.
I never realized they were in love until I got older. I now need to read the book.
There are no words to properly describe how much I love this timeless movie a story of love, friendship and courage

The book is obviously different, and I know they couldn't make it as explicitly stated in the book, but at least you can tell by the acting how in love they are with each other.
They are not "in love with one another"; they're friends. I saw them on set as I lived in the area at the time. We asked questions. The movie isn't a "lgbtq" anything movie. It's a movie about two very close friends. Go back to the gutter and get new material. This one is NOT that type of movie. If that's something you're looking for, this isn't it.

In the book there were more explicit romantic scenes that made it obvious they were in love. Since the film was released in 1991 they had to cut out these scenes as being gay wasnt widely accepted back then. Also, the author of the book is gay

And it was the 90s, the movie COULD intimate they were closer, if not out and out saying so, but so what? Ruth was very fortunate to have friends like Idgie and such.

Of course they were in love, it's a love story for what I understand, but as a kid, I didn't see it like that, the movie was a great lesson in friendship.

I love this movie so much me and my kids will be going to Juliet Georgia this summer to walk the streets!! Of whistle stop!!! I will probably cry!! This movie means so much to me! I worked as a CNA over 11 years and I heard many Beautiful stories just like this one!!! Just hold a special place in my heart!! LONG LIVE TOWANDA!!
And Buddy reminded me of my Uncle Jeff he passed away October 18th 1991 and he was 16 years old driving his truck and he got hit by a train.

@@Walls2008 I don't want to involve authorities because that would just put me out on the streets here in this country. I just want some kind of miracle to happen where someone gives me either a place to live (alone & safe) or enough money to get my feet back home where I can get a job & live a peaceful life.

I never could watch the part when Ruth dies. Idgy's pain was too big, too raw, even if it was just a movie. Kathy Bates was so needed in this wonderful but powerfully deep movie, sgmhe kept all of us from crying full forward. .You want Iidgy and Ruth to be together forever cause for Idgy that was all the family she ever had. She loved once,,and thats all her heart could take. There are a few great movies that when you see them, the characters are so vividly protryed by the actors in the movie, you forget it's a movie. You want to believe that once upon a time there was a Ruth and Idgy who loved each other deeply, and thats all that was important. Except of course the Fried Green Tomatoes.

Although it wouldn't have been the same movie, I always wished Ruth had been the type of lady to arm herself and not be afraid to use it.
Then she'd likely be arrested for killing her husband after admitting to it from guilt.
Idgie looks like a time traveler compared to everybody else, with that hairstyle. Not sure what the filmmakers were thinking.
What did Ruth's mother do when Frank was beating her daughter??
It was explained in the book: her mother had cancer and was bed bound and suffered horribly. Both her and Ruth depended on Frank completely. She was the one who told Ruth to escape as she was dying.
Ahhhhh the BBQ sure came in handy. Excellent movie.

I remember watching this movie with my mom and saying, “Those two are gay for each other.” She was like, “Your generation thinks everyone is gay!” Then I looked it up and, yep, they were totally gay for each other.

Good question -- guess he didn't fit in the car with all of Ruth's trunks and boxes. But her husband would have been a lot more scared if George was standing right there when he came out of the house!
@@marymintz9147 Yes, that's true. I just wonder how far George had to walk back. They could have squeezed him in the car. I think this is an oversight, not done for a reason. After all, the movie is about mutual solidarity, but George is being overlooked here. Just my two cents. He is my favorite character.

The hair and makeup people really messed up on this movie. Idgie looks like she walked out of 1983 talking to some lady from 1935. I saw this clip and thought it was some sort of time travel movie
