thank you for this, i am FRUSTRATED lol. the bathroom scene before the how will you have me scene?? like he just tried cleaning inej's wound, that's a huge step and is clearly effort on his part. also it's weird to me because that scene in the book is immediately followed up by van eck kidnapping her and she doesn't believe he'll rescue her, and he proves her wrong. the order is so important

Freddy and Amita are incredible. Like absolutely brilliant. But I completely agree that a big part of the problem is that they didn't adequately explore Inej's backstory. Because, I agree, the "how will you have me scene" is ALSO brutal in the books. She isn't being entirely fair to him there either. But it is understandable given her trauma. But the show viewers have no real context why she wears HER armor, you know? So it comes across as unsympathetic. (Also, I feel like so much of this could be solved by throwing in an "I protect my investments" line somewhere. 😂)

RIGHT?? We need *both* of their backstories or at least some part of them for this scene and this dialogue to make sense!! In the books she’s not certain she can trust him yet, so it totally makes sense given her trauma and we don’t exactly see that in the show 🥲 I really hope that this can be fixed with the spin off because kanej (and especially Inej!!!) deserved better 😤

I recently saw an interview with one of the writers of the show and she basically said that the reason they added so much of crooked kingdom was because they are not sure if netflix will renew the show. I did hear that Inej's backstory is in the Six of Crows spin off so I guess they are saving material for that. My opinion is that the crows storyline needs more breathing room to convey the same kind of depth the books have. And I really hope the spin off scripts don't end up on the chopping block cuz these characters and their motivations and stories need to be given more attention and care. If the crows get their own show, they will be more fleshed out.

I loved Amita and Freddy this season. Really, their acting gave me chills. And the scenes ON THEIR OWN were amazing. But I totally agree with you about the context. Maybe the writers had the right intentions but I asked myself: Would show-only fans understand, what Kanej is actually about? I also think, that some scenes lost their impact in the bigger picture. For example, that he tried to find her family at the end of season 2 but can only give her a hint. At the end of CK, he FOUND her parents and brought them to Ketterdam. And she did not see that coming! That and the fact he gave her a ship and held her hand without his gloves on make Inej BELIEVE in him again. Because she SEES him trying, because she SEES how much he cares about her. Not because he is suddenly healed from everything (and neither is she). Of course she will go on her own journey but Kaz regains her hope again in this scene. He gives them a beginning and she promises to come back. At the end of the scene in the series she leaves and LOST her hope in him(for now). I mean, this makes sense with the "How will you have me?" context, but why did they mix scenes that are totally antithetical in the books and absolutely do not belong together?😅
Wow, I could go on and on about this. I kind of loved how the scenes turned out and their chemistry was amazing but as you said... the context. I am still looking forward in which direction the writers will go with them in a possible spin-off (if we get it) because I am still so invested in them. I also hope that when the SOC characters have more space to breathe they will get the storylines they deserve. My baby Inej deserves her story to be told. She also has trauma, it's not easy for her either.

YES agree with all of that!!! I’m so sad that they didn’t explore Inej’s backstory more as well, she deserves to have that. I’m also sad that the fact that Heleen is dead means we won’t have the chocker scene in the ice court…

Everybody is out there praising the show and I was like screaming at the screen being like "Oh no , not another fan service moment, the service is not even nice". The trajectory of kaz and inej's relationship felt so weird where I felt like one minute the like each other too much and next moment they dont, didnt make sense to me. Also with tolya the first look he had when inej saved him I was already sus about them and then with the ship scene they confirmed my suspicions and that was bad.

aaAAA TRULY THOUGH, Amita and Freddy were STELLAR here this season!!! I have developed a habit of rewatching these scenes replacing the show context for the book context in my head and enjoying them that way 😂. Or failing that, just rewatch the dream sequence a thousand times (see, when they come up with their own original scenes for the characters the writing is actually pretty amazing! 🥺💜). Honestly, I think there are a few ways in which they could have tweaked things to make kanej make more sense this season, but imo if they wanted to mostly keep everything as is and not add nor remove scenes... they should have just made Kaz less emotionally open this season lol. I understand the need to translate his inner POV more to the screen and that being very difficult if he just scowls at everything for the whole season lol but I think they had the right opportunity to make him a kinda sympathetic asshole this season!! they were right there in the first 4 episodes with him being so reckless and putting everyone in danger and closing himself off from everyone, and even when he gives Inej her contract in that scene he's pushing her away... but you're right, the "It would bring me comfort to have you there with me" or smth line is where things start to get weird lol. I think it would've been more interesting to not have that line but still have Kaz be angry that Inej didn't show up and then we get a more book like dynamic for them- Inej is like "everything worked out why did I need to be there anyway??" and Kaz just can't say it, can't say that he would have liked it so he says something shitty gives her her freedom and pushes her away! he's not opening up :( and have it be a similar thing with the aftermath of the hallucination bit--- having Kaz be the one opening up there and Inej turning him down with the "hope is dangerous" is truly a beautiful peak angst moment but it just. does not make sense 😂!!! I think they could've tweaked the scene there to make it work, Kaz still being closed off and Inej becoming more and more disappointed and we truly nail it in the head with the Hope is Dangerous theme, though sadly it would probably have to be without the "there are those who drown us and those who pull us out" quote (which, again, nice writing without needing to pull from the book!). aaaaand then the crows barely appear and interact in ep7 lmao so they could have just led with all this to the How Will You Have Me scene and I feel like it would have worked A LOT better. And most importantly it wouldn't come across as if Inej just doesn't want him when he can't touch her, but that she doesn't want him when he's being an emotionally closed off asshole who can barely give her anything, emotionally, when she just hopes for so much.
YEAH, so, rant over 😅 there are some truly great comments you've got here Sara so yeah hopefully we're not all repeating ourselves too much but yeah you've said it all!! I honestly still truly wish for the crows spin off, not only cause I do have hope that the writing could be better, but also cause having more seasons and stuff to come really helps keep the fandom alive and I'm not ready for this fandom to start going away so soon

PS: I also really hope (and think) we could get a reprise, let's say, or a more faithful version of these scenes later on. Not all, but like, the Slat fight for example or the Bathroom Scene are almost so different or "stripped down" from their book counterparts that I think we might still get something more faithful to the books in the lines of these scenes later on. The bathroom scene particularly just has SO MUCH MORE going on than what they portrayed here, in terms of the themes and the dialogue and the push and pull of these two, and obviously the more intentional touching and kissing of Inej's neck (weird phrasing 😅). anyway! I think there's hope!! we shall see

Great analysis! I was honestly really happy to get "those" scenes ("bathroom" and "armor" scenes) in the show, but more I think about them, more I can see the criticism. The one thing that saves those scenes for me is the dream sequence of Inej (I saw somewhere a comment mentionning that this scene could represent (him getting rid of his gloves and of her knives) them being vulnerable in front of each other, so the last scene seems a bit less "drastic" and makes sense, at least from Inej's point of view. Maybe they are aiming for some conflict between them founded on the fact that they misunderstood each other (him thinking that she was telling him that she wants him without his problems, her telling him that she wants him to be vulnerable in front of her), but I agree that, if we have in mind how vulnerable was Kaz towards Inej this season, it really doesn't make sense.
Otherwise, I would really like to know your opinion on possible Inej-Tolya pairing (there are two or three hints on that in show it seems). Director said that he is big kanej fan, so they will be endgame for sure, BUT. I have to say I am really afraid of this possible scenario of her having some possible romantic scenes with Tolya before coming back to Kaz. Do you plan to cover that in some of your analysis in the future?
And besides that, I saw recently posted video "Shadow and Bone Cast Reacts to Crows' Fight Scenes" where Amita mentions the trauma of Inej and how it is represented in the scene (I honestly didn't see that, but it was interesting to see the intention with which she played this part). She also mentioned somewhere that she would like the show to more explore the trauma of Inej. I guess she sees that the show Inej isn't really the Inej we all appreciate, so I hope they will portray her with much more sensitivity as for her trauma. Otherwise, both Amita and Freddy were phenomenal this season.

I also do love the hallucination scene in general!! It was so soft and tender and sad 🥲 and I agree that they remove their metaphorical armour! But I still think the rest would have been better with the book’s context 😔
I am so weary of what they could do with Tolya to be honest - it really scares me that they could reduce Inej to a love triangle protagonist, because she is so much more than that. But I’ve seen that interview with Amita you mention and I trust her to do her character justice! I just need the writers to bring their A game and give her the arc she deserves ❤️

Yeah, SAB S2 kinda let me down. 😂Mainly with the Kanej storyline and how RUSHED it felt. 😓What made Kanej so great WAS the build-up and the slow burn. Like, when book readers discuss their top favorite slow-burn romances in YA literature -- Kanej is almost always a top 3 spot because of how well-written it is. You take away that build-up between them -- you take away the entire foundation of why we ADORE book Kanej. *LONG rant below. You were warned!*
In SOC, we get the setting, backstories, a storyline where everything is slowly pieced and built together in a beautiful and emotionally powerful way. We see them build trust in each other as partners/friends -- which transitioned into a slow burn romance we couldn't help BUT root for. Kanej was built 100% on an emotional foundation to where her rejection because of Kaz's phobia was mostly rooted in what it emotionally denied her -- not physically. She even says she doesn't feel ready for a physical relationship because of her SA trauma but wanted someone who could give her a 100% healthy relationship.
In SAB S1, we barely got any hints about Kanej -- understandable given it seemed that they haven't known each other long. And then we get hit with ALL the iconic scenes in the books -- but without that build-up/slow-burn, it takes away the ENTIRE reason they were fan-favorite scenes. The "OMG! 900 pages of reading/longing/tension and it's all lead to this!" fangirl emotions weren't there because there wasn't the build-up that CAUSED these moments to become iconic scenes.
And, yes. I was so mad there wasn't any spotlight on Inej's backstory! Like, this girl is a human trafficking survivor, endured severe abuse, and HAS to have some sort of trauma with touching, and certain triggers -- and you're telling me she isn't suffering ANY PTSD? Especially with a potential love interest? That was the perfect time to shine a light on that issue and explore what girls like Inej go through. (Like we get in the book with the "It's hard for me too..." line and Inej mentioning her own traumas with touching.)
We can touch on Genya's SA trauma, but not Inej's? (Not saying seeing her trauma was wrong. I'm just saying we could have had BOTH stories. Especially something as traumatic as s** trafficking in females and how their authority over their own bodies is stolen with "clients" they must service.)
For what it's worth, the producers are saying they have plans to lead with all of this into the SOC potential spin-off. And I read how IF we get that -- they'll finally explore Inej's backstory and her time at the Menagerie. (And the return of a certain "dead" character in the show.) But, I wonder if they were so afraid they wouldn't get a sequel/spin-off they just shoved all of our favorite scenes into the season "just in case."
But, IF they did get a spin-off or sequel... they just "gave" us our anticipated scenes without the utterly glorious build-up! 😭 All the top scenes and HUGE moments were done and while I know Leigh can give us more moments -- I feel so robbed. The book story of Kanej was SO MUCH better and truly unique. Book Inej was so compassionate, kind, tough but fair, while show Inej just felt off and asked for too much given that show Kaz was clearly trying. Like you said, Book Inej would NEVER!
And, yes -- you're telling me SA survivor Inej is going to be essentially demanding a physical relationship with touch-aversion Kaz despite personally seeing his trauma and KNOWING what it's like not to have a say in what happens to your body? She's going to make that kind of demand when she herself realistically speaking has her own traumas to work through regarding men taking what they want from her body?
Again, where is the trauma with Inej and her past? Where is her trauma and the empathy and understanding of others that comes FROM her trauma? I get this is a "high-budget fanfiction crossover" from Leigh and not canon to the book plot. But they could have stayed faithful to the characters and why we loved them.
I can go on and on myself about it. But, given the already LONG rant -- I'll stop myself now. 😂 I'm honestly hoping for a spin-off just so we can see all of this FIXED.
On one last note, in the finale scene with Inej getting on the boat and we see Tolya making those heart-eyes at her --- my inner gangster came out like, "Aw, HELL NO!" 😡😡😡I was already feeling annoyed as a Kanej fangirl and then seeing THAT just felt like a huge slap in the face. Like, WHAT?! Are you kidding me?! You butcher Kanej and then have the nerve to give us an unnecessary and unwanted love triangle that doesn't happen in the books? Again -- hoping for a SOC spin-off so Leigh can hopefully fix this huge mess. Hopefully!
If not, let's hope for a SOC book #3 that delivers us what we deserve after enduring this SAB season. 😭 Or another adaptation 10 years from now that gets it right. Like Percy Jackson. 😂

    • @_sarathedreamer
      @_sarathedreamer  Před rokem +1

I totally agree with what you're saying! The slow burn of it all IS why we love kanej in the first place - although I have to say that fremita DELIVERED with the tension. I would have loved to see all of it on the screen (I would even have taken one more season of out of canon crows if that's what it took, then have the soc and ck spin off explore that!) I'm sad that they put it all in there for fear of being cancelled, but considering netflix, I also get lol HOWEVER Putting those scenes out of context does remove some of their impact and that makes me sad!! I am also holding hope that the Inej centric episode of the spin off would give us her backstory, and I understand that certain things are delicate to show on screen - but just like in the books, it doesn't need to be graphic to be powerful. Her fight with the taxidermist was extremely powerful without any flashbacks that would be too hard on the audience.
I also went OH HELL NO BACK OFF TOLYA lmaaooo I feel you 😂It was so fast after the how will you have me scene too?! the audacity lol

@@_sarathedreamer Right? Freddy/Amita totally delivered with what they got. While the storyline was kinda butchered -- you can't deny they chose the right actors! 😂I just really wish they just stuck with a slow burn, even if the show was canceled. It would have felt right and true to the characters and left the rest to the fan's imagination, you know? 🤷‍♀
And yes, they could have touched lightly on Inej's past. As you said, they don't need to show something graphic regarding a graphic topic. I would have settled for even a mention that hints that Inej IS dealing with it in her own way. She's just dealing with it quietly as she does in the books. Hopefully we get a spin-off that finally tackles it because that was a huge disappointment to me.
And, yeah, I seriously wonder who thought it was a good idea to put in an unwanted love triangle RIGHT after the butchering of the classic "armor" scene? 🤨 Like, first you do that to us hardcore, loyal book fans and then you slap us in the face with THAT? 😱
At the most, I'm only OKAY with it if it's one of those "love triangles" that go nowhere. Maybe he pins for her (who wouldn't for Inej?) but it goes nowhere because he can tell she's still "waiting" for Kaz and already "taken" in that sense. If they actually make her attracted to him too and make it an unnecessary love triangle with her pining for both, I'm going to be SO mad because -- again, THAT'S NOT INEJ and it really cheapens Kanej to a new story low.
That would be a book-fan/show-writer betrayal on a whole new level! Especially considering Leigh is a show producer herself! 😂😂

That might be cruel on my part (so sorry Inej lol) but it’s a big part of their relationship in the books too - they understand each other like no one else does. But reducing Inej to a female character stuck between two love interests just doesn’t interest me in general AT ALL. The whole point of kanej is the pining due to internal turmoil - not some love triangle bullshit lol

@@_sarathedreamer YES! And that's what made Kanej so unique in the books and as a YA story. There was no cliche love triangle with the eye-rolling angst of a girl struggling to choose between two guys. It was just Kaz and Inej for each other and the only thing stopping them was the legit trauma they each had to work through. It was so refreshing because love triangles are a cliche trope done to DEATH.
I hope they don't reduce Inej to a girl struggling to pick between two guys and turn this into a "Team A/B" because that would just cheapen her character and Kanej even more.
