    • @Marcel_Audubon
      @Marcel_Audubon Před rokem +6

      I don't think his comment about the movie being more about him was meant to be positive.
      The scene with Olivia in a WWII uniform is a time waster and just put in so Gene could dance

    • @transfunctionalmedia5172
      @transfunctionalmedia5172 Před rokem +7

      @@Marcel_Audubon Actually, it was a dream sequence that alluded to the fact that the Muse had also visited Danny McGuire in 1945, but the writers didn’t do a good job of piecing it in… Gene originally didn’t want to dance at all in the movie, but ended up doing so anyway and choreographing this whole scene himself with Ortega… and luckily dancing with Olivia, giving her and us a magical memory. Ortega also had a magical opportunity in Gene’s “mentorship” showing him his technique for braking down and shooting dance sequences. Gene’s signature dynamic dance moves graced this movie.

    • @transfunctionalmedia5172
      @transfunctionalmedia5172 Před rokem +4

      @B.Yung: Yep, it was Gene and Olivia’s presence that carried it. And he made a better match for her energetically. Kelly had a bigger, stronger presence and more charisma than Beck naturally… I never saw Beck as cast well for this role or for Olivia, very bland and lacking charisma. Weakest part of the movie next to the script changes.

    • @Marcel_Audubon
      @Marcel_Audubon Před rokem

      @@transfunctionalmedia5172 No, weakest part of the movie was an old man from yesteryear Hollywood not accepting the fact that the page had turned and no one wanted to see a geriatric pretending he was still young dancing and skating. If Gene Kelly's intuition was not to dance, he should have followed it and the first time they asked him to change out of his orthopedic shoes and put on roller skates, he shoulda walked off the set. Cringeworthy stuff. He had already taken a too-old-for-the-role turn in Desmoiselles de Rochefort and that was 13 long, unkind years earlier! If he really needed the attention, he shoulda waited for Cocoon and he might have retained his dignity.

    Xanadu was visually and technically spectacular at the time, a Technicolor dream, and so was Olivia! It depicted and really highlighted more of the fantasy, magical quality that Olivia carried… She’s the only person who was actually “muse like” in reality! It marked me more than Grease and I enjoyed it even more despite the weak script and dialogue. I saw it at least 4 or 5 different times in the theatre. As a roller-skating kid, dreaming of California and Olivia, I couldn’t get enough of it!

  • @transfunctionalmedia5172

    Actually, the script and dialogue was the issue, but Olivia and the music were the saving grace. The FX and graphics, transitions and the Panavision quality of the movie is a stamp and hallmark of those roller disco years, and the graphics and animation, the whole look and feel of this movie captures 1979-1980 so dead on. If you were alive, I was 9, it transports you every time. It’s actually, a colorful and light-filled Time Capsule, the cinematography gave it a “magical”, warm quality.

    I was in Olivia Newton-John fan for 50 years. I seen Xanadu 309 times at the theaters. Yes you read that right 😉. I was 20 years old at the time and had inherited some money from my parents passing several years earlier. Therefore I had the freedom to do what I wanted at that point in my life. I eventually had to get a real job 😃. Since the movie was not a massive hit I would go to the theater at the first showing of the day, and just stay there all day long and watch the movie over and over and over again. And then go back and do it again the next day. I did not go every single day though. I literally at that point in time knew every single line of every single character in the movie, every single word. I can look back and laugh at myself now and think wow I really did not have a life at that point 🤣. With that being said I wouldn't change a thing. I also met Olivia at her small Malibu ranch in May of 1980. It was about a 12 to 14 ft iron fence between her and I and believe it or not it was actually two police officers that told me where she lived. Again that was 42 years ago and you certainly wouldn't be able to do that now. That being said I got to speak with Olivia for about 15 to 20 minutes. She was so kind and sweet to me and even signed three album covers and I also took a selfie with her with my camera. Of course we didn't call it selfies back then 😃. She treated me like her equal, and if I wouldn't have known who she was I would have never known she was a superstar because she never presented herself that way. What an absolute class act and I will be forever heartbroken that she is gone. I loved her whenever ounce of my being, and I know I'm not alone by far. They will never be another person like Olivia in fact no one will ever come close. Rest in peace Olivia. We love you more than words could ever express, and you will live on in our hearts and memories forever ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

      Stephan, you words beautifully depicted the same feelings that I have had for Xanadu for all these years. Back then I had a friend - we were 12/13 years old at the time. We met because of Xanadu and became inseparable friends, intertwined by the magic of this wonderful movie - no violence, no cursing except the fantasy that kept our friendship stronger over the years.Like you, we would go to the first showtime at the local movie theater until the very last one. We would ride our bikes to the theater earlier to admire the poster of Xanadu, trying to remember every single detail that was forever etched in our minds and hearts. We became Olivia Newton John's fans. He had all the records and every piece of memorabilia you can think of. He even met her when she went to Brazil in 1992. He gave her a letter that he had written especially to her Unfortunately he died in 2004, but our friendship never dimmed or cease to exist because love never dies - When I went to Olivia's concert in 2005, there was an empty seat next to mine. I made believe that my friend was there, enjoying the show, and I could actually sense his presence. Xanadu is a wonderful movie that brings back the innocence that once made part of two boys' life. I believe there is a land of the living and a land of the dead - the bridge is love, the only meaning, the only survival. Olivia, you are now in Xanadu... I am definitely sure that my friend has been with you. May God bless you. Rest In Peace.

    Thanks for uploading this interview and the video footage to go with it. My family finally migrated to Australia in 1979 from Argentina after 3 years of interviews and overcoming lots of obstacles. Back in those days there was no internet and going to a local library to find a book about Australia was the best one could aim to have in order to learn more about it. One Saturday morning a TV show played a song/video featuring Olivia Newton John from Australia! I sat infront of that black and white tv set open mouth and totally mesmerised by her voice and looks (I was only 15 years old!) and to be honest it gave me the motivation I needed at that time to keep learning about Australia.
    It is 2021 and I still live and love Australia as if I had been born here but I can not separate Olivia Newton John from my experience as a immigrant (she was actually also a migrant to Australia).
    We are truely blessed to live at a time in history when one can relive at will parts of our lives through listening and viewing films and other media available in the palm of our hands! It is like magic!

Others are “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. I dare you not to cry during this movie.Its an amazing love story with a twist.. Another is “The Princess Bride” with the late André the Giant. It’s a kind of quirky fairytale/ love story. Another movie that didn’t get high praise from critics but seems like it is predicting a possible future for our country is the movie “In Time” with Justin Timberlake. This movie is a high tech, rich verses poor twist on a futuristic society.
    If you love movies, have an open mind, and hate when movie critics try to tell you NOT to see a movie because THEY didn’t like it, then you really need to see each one of these movies. ENJOY 😉

    Saying that, the basic training was
    very helpful. I speedskated on Cali style roller skates and I've done many duets. To get there it took lots of pain.

    Want to see the referenced movie with Gene Kelly ruling on roller skates, turning steel wheels into wings? That would be MGM's 1955 musical, "It's Always Fair Weather," a legendarily underrated, unrecognized, but unparalleled classic.

    I've never, ever liked 'Grease'. Grease is very, very 50s- probably more 50s than the 1950s really were.
    'XANADU''s music is better, the storyline is although actually lighter, but, still pretty original.
    Most people go to the movies to see action, violence and nobody admits to wanting to see sexy / moments of sex.

    Gene Kelly was an awful injection into the movie. It was young and fresh one minute, then all of a sudden it feels like some over-the-hill mafia-looking dude cones and snatches the whole thing out of the jaws of victory. That whole scene is garbage, really. A complete diversion from the tone of the rest of the film. It needed to stick to the outdoors for one thing. For another, the whole roller rink thing felt like a "musical numbah!" Ugh.
