  • Some thoughts on one of my favorite JRPGs - The Last Remnant, which has been recently "Remastered" for modern consoles. I own the switch version. It's a great game, why do journalists not "get it"?

    For me, the forgotten classic Jrpg was Vagrant Story. It had some good mechanics, decent enough story, but it was its timing that hurt it. For those who don't know, in Vagrant Story you played a "Riskbreaker". The more or longer battles were you built up "risk", which you could unleash for varied effects depending on your weapon, level & the thing you were battling. However, if you built it up too much, then it would harm or hinder your character in some way. You could have weapons tailored to specific foes, so a sword for for humans, a spear for dragons, etc; & the more you used those specific weapons vs those foes, the stronger said weapons became against them.
    The game came out literally on the same week as the PS2 launch (it was a PS1 title). If the game had been released one month earlier or later, chances are there'd be a Vargrant Story 3 or 4 by now.
    EDIT: To you comments on the 23:00-ish mark. While I still occasionally buy AAA western titles, they're not even close to my favorites anymore. The AAAs are barely on my radar. I look to studios like Larian, Obsidion & InXile (Yes, I know that the latter 2 are now owned/"partnered" by/with M$). I'm very keen on BG 3 from Larian (Disclosure, I was a Kickstarter backer for D:OS1 & 2 from them).

      Yeah western AAA titles aren't even on my radar anymore. Maybe CD Projekt Red, but are they even western?

    • @Harrison11106

      @@DVSPress I tend to think of them as such. When I think "western" RPGs: I tend to think of RPG titles like "old skool" party based titles like Balders Gate, NWN; but also single player 1st &/or 3rd person games like the Bethesda Fallouts, & Witcher series.
      When I think "Eastern" titles/Jrpgs, I think: Ni No Kuni (if you're a Studio Ghibli fan GET THIS TITLE), Dragons Dogma, the "Tales" games, & Dark Souls. They're (generally) more about the journey, then the end goal.
      While not a "tried & true" differential, that system tends to work for me.

    I really like this notion of of "indirect exposition" which I never really could wrap my head around. To this day, I absolutely adore RPGS with intricate worlds and characters. Despite this it is an absolute chore if a game just dumps an insane amount of exposition on every new character or town that you meet. It goes so far that I just won't play anymore. A non direct approach seems always more intriguing than having characters be walking lexicons and history books.

    I’m so late to the party but I absolutely adore this game. It’s rare to find people like yourself who loves this game. I think back in the day when it came out for XBox 360, they needed a flexible engine to develop games in a quick time table. Guilty as charged: I bought this game when it was relatively new and I dropped it immediately because the combat system was a complete mystery: the one thing I remember is that I was asked to choose melee or magic and then the combat would resolve itself. The morale system is still mysterious and while the individual stats of each character lead to more personality, it's not intuitive to how you build your team. How does one character's "love" affect my union in battle?

    Have you played or thought of playing a JRPG for the Xbox 360 called "Lost Odyssey", created by a lot of the people who used to work on the old final fantasy games (and even had the same composer do the OST). It's a very classical game in regards to its gameplay, going for a 100% classic turn-based combat (not ATB or real-time element), however it amps the difficulty and strategic elements up a bit compared to those older games (for instance it expands upon the "back row to take less damage" concept by making the front row act as a damage guard that can be depleted and replenished). Fairly linear but feels very engaging and interesting.
    The story is great too, and there are extra little "visual novel" esque "dreams" that expand upon the backstory of the main character and are great little short stories in their own right (helps that they apparently got an Japanese short story author to write those short stories for the game)

    • @WhatsTheTakeaway
      @WhatsTheTakeaway Před 5 lety +2

      Yeah this was a good game, felt much more Final Fantasy than anything after FF12. Also, Blue Dragon is made by the same studio, with DBZ artist (same guy who illustrated Chrono Trigger), and was also a fun game.

    I am really going to try to commit to this game. My main motivation is FF16. I am very excited for that game. It is right up my alley so far. And since TLR has the same director as 16 (and TLR being the only game he has ever directed for) I am very interested in seeing it through to completion. But There is a lot here that I also really enjoy. The FF12 aesthetics which I am really fond of, and I think the idea of the battle system is really cool.
    I played this game when I was younger, but I gave up on it due to not understanding the battle system, and the world not being as explorable as say FF12's world. But I am much more open to the game world being like it is these days, and I am way more commited to learning now. I am very curious.

A challenge is good and has it's place, but easier settings don't diminish anything. It makes more sense from a business standpoint to add easy modes to games. More people playing = more copies sold.
    Anyway, this game looks kind of neat! At the price on the switch, I may give it a shot.

    It might be that the game is great for some people but I think that its a bit of a very niche thing.

      Well riding a bike, or driving a car or swimming are all difficult until you learn how to do those things. Id argue the best games are the ones that ask of the player to get involved and learn how to play BUT its the games job to get the player intrested in learning, its the best way to teach! Your favourite teachers in school probably werent the ones that had you follow along in text books, they were the ones that did unique things to entertain and teach at the same time.

    This review caught me off guard...I keep forgetting how eclectic this channel can be. I'm personally a huge Final Fantasy fan and was a bit disappointed by how Final Fantasy VIII is being re-released and is being paraded as a Remaster, when all they seem to be doing is changing Squall's player model beyond recognition (looks more generic now) and butchering the game's base mechanics with trainers. Also, any thoughts on the full-blown E3 gameplay reveal for the Final Fantasy VII Remaster?
    On a side note, can we look forward to a Toy Story 4 review? There's been a lot of positivity surrounding the film but I have the feeling that none dare to give it an objective look into its merits in contrast to the three previous films. I'm wary of all things Disney these days so I'm still cogitating whether I'll go see it in theaters.

    Game journalists are bad at games. I suspect that it's because they grind through games because they "have to" finish a game before reviewing. Thus, games that reward skill or thoughtful planning get panned for being too hard or grindy.

    western game journalists don't know how to play games other than basic triple a garbage that has been releasing continuously for like a decade or something like the cod franchise.. We need gamers for game journalism not some one who can string a few words together..
    The games good doesn't really hold your hand all that much but just helps push you in the right direction by giving you the info you need without it being too much and a drag like xenoblade chronicles II or whatever it was on the switch where its teaching you stuff pretty much throughout the entire game.. This game is quite easy and fun to get into just later in the game you can find yourself hitting a wall after one particularly huuge battle that goes on for ages like its just an insane war.. From there you need to go some where before you can really progress but it doesn't really tell you anything and its where i got stuck (on the pc version i had it on disk).
    I saw it in the e shop so been tempted by it.. I don't have any turn based rpgs on my switch im not really into them but i liked this game on pc so thats why im here to see what the whole remastered one is

    • @DVSPress
      @DVSPress  Před 2 lety

    It’s technically a remaster of the original Xbox 360 version, meaning it runs and looks better than Xbox version. Classic PS1 Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 9 on current consoles are pretty much the PC version with tweeks to menu and other things.
    Anti aliasing on switch is worse than PC. - Captain Obvious moment. Switch is portable system. It has a mobile SOC similar to what you see on smartphones. Switch has been out for a while and it’s SOC wasn’t cutting edge when it was released either. It’s not like Nintendo wanted to sell an 800 dollar device. It would not sell.
    Besides when gamers say PC is better they mean Gaming PC with fast CPU and GPU. Try playing games on a laptop with only an Intel Integrated GPU and see how well it runs.

  • @NeroVingian40
    @NeroVingian40 Před 3 lety +2

    I find the game to skip on a lot of explaining to be honest. I’m currently playing the game on an iOS device, currently at Elysion now, and, yeah, sure, they do explain the battle system, but they skip on everything else though. They didn’t really teach you how different formations really works on a battlefield, they don’t explain what the hell classes are, what weapon wielding differences are, how exactly the game chooses what commands to give you during battle, what do each stats means to your character, etc. They really do don’t explain a lot of the stuffs.
    I’d say, I’m siding with the game journalists for this. They really do skip a lot of explaining. These journalists aren’t people who don’t know how to play a game, they just play the game blind without a guide or walkthrough. You probably can just power through the game just randomly mashing buttons here and there and you will eventually beat it, but the fun is gone because you don’t even understand the full extent of what’s happening in the game.

    Never got the chance to play in 2008 because it was a Xbox exclusive and I hate Xbox so this remaster for PS4 is perfect for me, had to do the same thing with tales of vesperia, these developers obviously realized making their jrpgs an Xbox exclusive is a horrible idea, Xbox is for western shooters, Nintendo is for cartoony kids games and playstation will always be the home of great japanese games, and why does Xbox fanboys always talk about halo, don't they have any other exclusives that aren't shooters?

    Wait... you’re playing this on the Switch? No wonder you think calling it a “Remaster” is kind of a stretch. You’re playing it on an a console that doesn’t have near the graphical power nor that processing power that the PS4/PS4Pro or XB1/XB1X does. It’s kind of a self defeating point in this case.

    The problem with the last remnant is that it's main character and story is awful. The gameplay is the only good point it has and many don't understand it. It's really not my favourite jrpg but i did buy it up again for something to do with the updated pc version on the switch until Fire Emblem three houses comes out. The slow down mechanic still grates on me when trying to train enemies for high chains.

      @astralwyrm3787 Před 5 lety +1

      @@DVSPress I don't know anything about Japanese Rush if he was presented differently i might have a different opinion of that version. I find a number protag's around that time annoying/stupid. Like Tales of Symphonia 2's for another example though it's been awhile since i played it. When I've been playing last remnant recently i've been wondering if the developers had trouble deciding who the main villain was going to be. They spend a long time being all mysterious. Is it the zhuge liang esque guy? Is it the wierdo Heir guy? Is it the 'conqueror' who very much sticks within the confines of the title as far as i can remember and have seen. Obviously it's conqueror but i don't really know anything about him at undelwalt other than he seems to know more than everyone else and is the last remnant equivalent of the terminator. Maybe it's partly my fault this run because i've been low battle ranking much of the game and only up till the fallen did i really rack up the battle rank to beat him. Which means story progression has grinded to halt from like Battle rank 25-48.
      If they released another game in the vein of the last remnant with more unions I'd be all for that. The less well known classics i would recommend that come to mind are Suikoden III and Saga Frontier 2. Also Ark twilight of the spirits.
