- Rush Hour | The Last Remnant Review
An RPG that doesn't explain 90% of its systems. A game that doesn't care if you can't beat it. Square Enix's modern classic that they removed from Steam and refuse to bring back. Forget those dime-a-dozen jrpgs sitting in your backlog, waiting to see the light of day; THIS game - The Last Remnant - is what you should bring to the forefront.
Forget Final Fantasy. If you want an adventure rpg with the fat trimmed, all while set to the most rockin' music in the genre, look no further.

I have a similar love hate relationship with this game, it's even worse for me because I'm a completionist, everytime I try to replay it I learn something new that usually means I locked myself out of a more optimal option or out of a certain guild task or something, it's both a compliment that I'm still learning new things about it even now and an indictment of just how impossible it is to fully complete. It's basically become the White Whale to my Captain Ahab. One day I will finally 100% though if it's the last thing I do.
Make a video showing how you achieved this feat when you achieve it
Seems like Square really doesn't want you to play this game.
I have a somewhat annual tradition of intalling The Last Remnant and seeing how far I can get before I quit. I've never beaten it, or gotten close. It's got such a rich world and cool lore, I love the gameplay, but something drives me away from sticking with it.
Super underrated game. If anyone is a trophy completionist, DO YOUR RESEARCH. There is a branching quest chain where choice A has 3 subsequent quests and choice B only has 2, and if you don't take choice A, you FAIL THE COMPLETE ALL QUESTS ACHIEVEMENT. I hate-played this game twice cuz of that
Fun Fact, originally the Main Character was going to differ in Each Region.
Japan would get Rush, North America would get The Conqueror, Europe and everyone else would get ???.
Oh, so kind of like Nier and how the 360 version got the dad and the PS3 version got the brother. That is a fun fact, thanks for sharing!
I think that both Capcom and Square Enix are competing to see who treat their respective fans the dirtiest.
The aesthetics of the game caught my attention, I'm going to look for a basic guide and try playing the game
Weird, I don't remember this game having any issues on PC, then again I haven't tried running it above 60 FPS like you're mentioning the issue with it might be.
Sadly, you need to framerate cap or toggle vsync for some older PC ports or else they start to break.
They made the most awesome and complex combat system they could, and then punish you for using it.
That's where my time ended with the game... I did so much side content, and like farming mobs on the way, that the game just got too hard, I'd start any random battle and get completely wiped out in the opening turn. Just brutal.
No shame in giving up on this game. When I first played it, it was on the 360, where mindlessly grinding was the worst possible thing you could do. I gave up halfway through and didn't revisit it until years later.
@@RushHourWeekend yeah same, I'd totally give it another chance if it was available on pc. A game that might interest you is Soul Nomad and the World Eaters.
I felt fairly competent when i first played this game...
Then I hit a boss fight on disk 2.
I was also today years old when I found out the bosses scale with your BR, and guess who often grinds a decent bit c:
I was never certain if I was missing the key strat or if there was just a bs difficulty spike.
I've always considered The Last Remnant to be the true FF12.
Lost Odyssey is the true FF11, with the actual 12 being 13, and 13 being the true FF14.
(Mmo's should've never been mainline)
We're very lucky to have a port of Fantasian coming later this year, finally escaping the apple arcade hellhole. Mistwalker has done a much better job at creating Final Fantasy games than modern day Square Enix, which isn't surprising considering Sakaguchi knows what he's doing.
@@RushHourWeekend as in, a console port?
Cuz I'd play tf outta Fantasian if I can on my ps5
Square Enix is publishing it for Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and Steam this Winter, and they're adding both Japanese and English voice acting. Should be a real treat.
0:56 Valkyrie Profile begs to differ, I swear to god The Last Remnant is so much more forgiving than Valkyrie Profile... and that's saying something
The Last Remnant was definitely an experience I do not regret whatsoever, it has one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming (second only to Valkyrie Profile 2 to me), an awesome world and setting with tonnes of lore and detail, a really unique combat system, there's so much to love about this game but... it has way too many flaws like you bring up in this video. I hate how you can only equip Rush and nobody else, you get so many weapons and equipment but you can't use them, let me manage everyone!!!! Apparantly the PC version lets you do that but I only played it on 360 and Square-Enix being the bellends that they are took the game down from steam!!!
I think the problem with this game ultimately is that they didn't go all in with the management, like you said, if you could equip everyone, sure it might be time consuming to optimize but some people actually really like that sort of thing, so why limit it to just rush!? It makes it feel like no matter what I do I'm not improving or getting better by doing sidequests and getting new gear, it's jsut sat there im my inventory completely unused, which makes the game feel underwhelming in regards to rewards, so only rush's group is going to benefit from all the investments I put in, all thhe other groups are fixed.
I will say though, this was one of the most satisfying JRPGs I ever beat because of how challenging it was but man it is a train wreck and a half.
Then again, at least this game actually tried to do something different which I do respect, most games are just the same shit over and over again which is getting lame, we need more games like this that break the mold and dare to take the risk, so even though it's a trainwreck it is one that I respect.
Wasted potential is the best way to describe The Last Remnant in every single meaning of the word.
The soundtrack though... man it goes hard.
I'm actually planning on making a video on Valkyrie Profile 2 next, so nice comparison there. And while I didn't mention it in the video, The Last Remnant is definitely in the top 10 best soundtracks in all of gaming.
@@RushHourWeekend You know Valkyrie Profile 2 turns 18 Years old in 11 days right? I'll be doing a video on it too to celebrate that. It's finally reached adulthood.
I look forward to your video on it, it's my favorite game of all time.
Looking forward to it! It's also one of my favorites.
My time with this game was the best. I would just fight and fight. Forget about the damn story lol
I love and HATE this game. I swear. I play it like once a year and it pisses me off every time.
Perfect summary for this game.
Yeah dude, I tried this game and the fire idol… man, it put a sour taste in my mouth and when I hit the wall and searched online to get an idea on how to progress and seen it was 100% luck i but the bullet, beat him and stopped playing haha
I don't blame you one bit. I don't know how many times I came close to quitting this game during my first playthrough. It can be brutal.
.... I think I saw Remastered in my Steam library....
Square always treated their fans dirty.
It is rough being a fan of their games, isn't it? 😂
@@RushHourWeekend yes it is.
Eh they were top tier in the PlayStation 1 and to a somewhat lesser extent PS2 era. It seemed like once they got into HD development and they were needing to make money more than anything they started to really just fall apart
There does at least seem to be hints they are starting to get better finally.
lol you had me laughing several times in this
Gacha games have fairer mechanics than this game lol
