An infrared thermometer is one that derives temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation, also known as black-body radiation, emitted by the object being measured. The design consists essentially of a lens that directs infrared thermal radiation onto a detector, which converts the radiant power to an electrical signal that, after being compensated for ambient temperature, can be displayed in temperature units.

No one ever mentions what the laser actually does. Is it merely to make it easier to point the detector? If so that seems easy enough to say so why does no one ever SAY THAT?
