    How to File a Tax Refund for students in Germany
    Should a student in Germany file a Tax Return?
    What can a student claim in a Tax Refund?
    How to file a tax return in Germany
    Tax Returns for Students or Studentensteuererklärung is not as difficult as it seems. Students can get upto €6000 Euros Tax refund in Germany for their first Studies or Unlimited amount of tax refund for their second studies in Germany.
    Taxes are an essential component levied by the Government. Anyone who has earnings in Germany can claim back part of the income tax which they have paid throughout the year.
    Studying is expensive. Fortunately, as a student, you can claim back many of your study costs on your tax return. But the topic of taxes can overwhelm many students so they either do not think about taxes or do the bare minimum to get a refund. I often asked my seniors about tax returns and they either didnt know anything or just said to do the bare minimum, so here is some information for you to get started.
    Lets start with the basics:
    For all mandatory filers the deadline is the 31st of July of the following year. So for 2022 one has till the end of July 2023 to file a tax return.
    What can be claimed in a tax return?
    - Education fees
    - Transportation Costs
    - Job applications
    - Relocation costs
    - Telephone and internet costs
    - Electronic gadgets
    - Other equipment
    - Any realized losses from your investments
    - Any many others that I might have forgotten
    An important thing is to keep proof of things whenever possible, this will help you manage expenses and help you later on when you are applying for a tax return
    How to file a tax return
    The are many options available
    1. Elster (official Program by the Govenment)
    2. Tax Consultant (often very expensive and mostly used by professionals)
    3. Tax Aid Associations (also mostly used for complicated tax situations)
    4. Online platforms (wundertax,taxfix etc)
    5. Softwares (Wiseo, Quick Steuer etc)
    6. Submitting manual papers (due to covid it might not be available in many Cities)
    Choosing a platform depends on the complexity of the taxes, in most cases it is better for students to go for Online platforms which cost 29€ onwards One can go for Elster but it is in German language and is too complicated even for German nationals (but it is free).

    Given that most of us are not fluent in German and bureaucracy usually is a big hurdle. It would be great if you can show a step by step guide of a web app to file these taxes, how to apply for all these exemptions you mentioned and where and how to get the supporting documents and data record from would be great.

    Hi Ahsan, Very informative video. Thank you. I think there is something regarding the expense roll over that you did not clarify in the video that is very important and please correct me if it is wrong. If you earn below the tax free threshold of 9.744 EUR while you are studying but your expenses do not exceed the amount you earned then you will not get a Verlustvortrag. For example if you earned 5.000 EUR while studying in 2021 but only accrued 2.500 EUR of expenses then your carry forward losses to the following years will be zero. In this case there is no point in filing a tax return to carry forward losses.

    • @ahsanfinance
      @ahsanfinance  Před 5 měsíci

      Tax refunds do not work like that. If you earn less than the "Grundfreibetrag" you are not subjected to income tax. However, your study/work related expenses are still considered. Here is a very detailed video on this topic for further explanation: czcams.com/video/uau8u3MBqR8/video.html

    In 2022 I was studying and not earning, but since September 2022 I got a fulltime job, where they cut taxes from my salary. I would like to do Steuererklärung, but I’m not sure how does it work..should I add my studies expenses as well with my expenses during working period, or that should be done somehow separately?
    I’m as well thinking about doing also for 2021 when I was just studying and doing mini job.

      Hi there Natalija, its great that you are thinking of filing your taxes. Here are a few things to consider
      1. You have to file for individual tax return for each year
      2. Its ideal to file the oldest tax return first.

    Hi Ahsan, thank you so much for the step-by-step explanations, the videos are a great reference for filing returns. I have a small question. I was student from 2019 and graduated in 2022. I have recently filed for 2019, and have a 'Loss carry forward', like you already explained. Now is it mandatory to wait for the confirmation from the Amt for 2019 ( eta 6 - 8 weeks) before filing for 2020? If not, do I have to mention anything about 2019 filings in the 2020 form? Thanks again!

    • @ahsanfinance
      @ahsanfinance  Před rokem

      Hey there, if the finanzamt accepts your expenses the will give you a certificate for the loss carry forward. So yes you will have to wait this time frame to get the exact amount and put it in the next years tax return.

      @shreyasdeshpande6392 Před rokem

      @@ahsanfinance Thanks for the reply man. I will also most likely have a loss carry forward in 2020 and 2021 (considering university fees). In that case, the refund amount might be non-zero only in 2022 for the first time. So does that mean I will have to wait 4 to 6 weeks between each tax filing from 2019 to 2022?

The tax loss certificate is only carried forward (up to 7 years) if you have filed your tax return within the proper time frame and received the certificate.

      You do not have to provide proof when applying for a tax return. Only when the tax office asks for proof will you have to provide it. For this purpose you will need to provide invoices for those expenses. For larger expenses like a laptop or a mobile phone its easier to recover the invoice. When it comes to items like pens papers etc I do not think the finanzamt will ask for any proof.

    I have a question, I was a student from 2020 till 2022 and started to work in 2022. Now I want to fill a tax return for 2020, 2021 and 2022. The question is can I submit all 3 together? Or I need to submit 2020 first and wait for Verlustvortrag and then fill 2021 , and after getting Verlustsvortag for 2021 submit 2022?

    • @ahsanfinance
      @ahsanfinance  Před 6 měsíci

      Theoretically you should be able to submit all of you tax returns at once. But depending on the Software you use and your Finanzamt, things might not work properly. Thats why I always recommend that you do it one by one. So Submit the 2020 tax return and wait till you get a response and proceed after that for the other years.

      If the income tax that you have paid is less than the tax burden then the finanzamt will generate a Tax Loss Certificate. You can put this certificate in the following years' tax return and get your tax adjusted accordingly.

    If i can contact you that will really help me, or if not can you please provide ne some material that will help me understand this taxation system. I cannot find relatable material because there is soo much information and i can't figure out which is relatable for me.

      @ahsanfinance  Před 4 měsíci

      In 2023 as you had 2 jobs at the same time, you might be obliged to submit a tax return. For the Tution fee, you have to declare the expenses which occured in that year in the tax return. So the fee for 2022 cannot be declared in a 2023 tax declaration, it can only be declared in the 2022 tax declaration. Thanks for your valuable answers and video!

    • @ahsanfinance
      @ahsanfinance  Před rokem

      Firstly, you have to file a tax return for each year individually. i.e. Submit a tax return, wait about 6 weeks to get a response and see what the finanzamt says. If you agree with their response ( a direct tax refund if paid enough taxes or a loss carry forward statement), then proceed to the next years submission. So to submit a tax return for the past 3 years would take about 3 to 6 months to do it most effectively. I would suggest you learn about the tax filing process and file your first return as soon as you can. I couldnt quite understand your second question. For the elster certificate yes you should get it soon but even if you do not have it you can submit a tax return using online webapps without any problems. Finally at the moment there is no ruling for the electricity costs that students are getting this year. More info will be given later on but this should not have any effect on your loss carry forward
