- Mr. Padre is well regarded as one of the best hitters of his generation. He led the league in hitting EIGHT times in his career and won SEVEN Silver Slugger awards. He hit over .300 in 19 of his 20 seasons, the lone season coming his rookie year when he played only 54 games. He also hit over .350 SEVEN times! He'll go down as one of the best do ever do it at the plate.

my greatest memory of Mr Padre was watching him foul off 20+ pitches just to get the perfect pitch while tiring the pitcher and giving his team mates a look at the pitches. LEGENDARY
Also a Great person !!
that is so awesome haha
No doubt about it!!
Mr. Padre... Dammit we miss ya Tony! 😢
One of the 10 best players in MLB history
This man hit .394 in the lockout season! RIP Tony Gwynn.
The last month before the strike he hit. 428
I watched gwynn alot in the 90s. Let me tell you, he is by far the greatest pure contact hitter statistically and realistically ever. He dominated against the greatest Pitchers in their prime during steorid era.
Dude hit .338 over a 20 year career and never had a bad season. He hit .309 or better in 19 of 20 seasons. He would be mvp every year today with his numbers.
Tony Gwynn was just a class act
👍👍👍👍
I’d watch an hour long video of Gwynn hitting line drives the opposite way
had his vhs tape on hitting when i was a kid
R.I.P. Tony Gwynn
What a shame he was in Montreal during 3000. Imagine if he was in SD.
On his mom's birthday, just like when hw hit 2,000.
What a clutch hitter. So many highlights. Greetings from The Netherlands.
IMO the greatest hitter ever.
He was definitely top 5 hitters ever. (I'd probably put him 2-3 after Ted Williams). He was a 5 tool player but people forget because his hitting was so lethal.
Tony baseball genius, had god given talent, was great human being and American treasure 🙏
Gwynn was one of the best, but I haven't seen many of these highlights or much from his career at all, so this was fantastic. Only thing I'd say is mix the music a little lower. It was hard to hear Gwynn or the broadcasters.
The 1960s through the 1990s
Rod carew , wade Boggs, and tony gwynn were the absolute best pure hitters. Stan musial and ted Williams before that.
I'm hearing a lot about Tony being the greatest "pure" hitter ever. My question is why not just say "the best hitter ever?" And if not, what's the difference between the two?
Still can't believe he's gone 😞
Greatest hitter of all time
Good video, but lose the music.
When you factor in that he’s had the highest batting average since 1949, with all the proactive relief pitching. He just might be.
Tony had all of the tools.
Who tf would down vote this?!?!?
Those who know he isnt top 10
Those who know baseball knows he belongs in the top 3.
Red Sox fans are always mad since the Yankees always beat them
The background music is terrible.
Canaanite misic
Was Paul O'neill drunk @ 2:17 ?
Loose the music!
Ted Williams was best pure hitter.
Funny Ted say Tony was the purest hitter.
Next to Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle & Ty Cobb, Griffey Jr. & Willie Mays oh & George Brett, Al Kaline & Roberto Clemente to name a few
Wade Boggs was a better hitter/batsman than Gwynn. On base percentage is a more important statistic than batting average. Boggs career OBP is .415, Gwynn .388. Boggs led the league in OBP in 6 seasons, Gwynn only once. Boggs had and OBP of over .400 in 11 seasons, Gwynn 6 seasons. Boggs had 4 seasons of 200 hits and 100 walks, Gwynn never accomplished that feat. Boggs had 7 consecutive seasons of 200 hits with at least 89 walks, Gwynn drew over 59 walks in a season only one time.
Boggs was better at drawing Walks than Gwynn, no doubt. Gwynn was better at hitting the ball, and at hitting with power. Who was better overall? Well, if we look at rBat+, Baseball-Reference's rate version of the hitting component of their WAR, Boggs had a rBat+ of 135, Gwynn was at 137. Close, but advantage Gwynn.
Tony Gwynn didn't need to walk as much, he didn't strike out... Look at the man's stats. He simply did not strike out. The most strike outs he had in a season... 40. Wade Boggs didn't strike out that much either, but Boggs had 9 seasons over >40 strike outs. Boggs is 455th in AB/SO, Gwynn is 92nd with all but Nellie Fox playing pre-1950.
Almost identical OPS+ for their careers (Boggs 131 vs. Gwynn 132) and OPS (Boggs 858 vs. Gwynn 847). Boggs benefited greatly playing in Fenway. .354/.443 home, .302/.387 road (which includes years in NY and TB)... .369/.464 at Fenway.. played almost his whole career in loaded lineups. Not saying it was all fenway, he had seasons in the 80s where his numbers were great regardless, but it does even things up between them
They are both great hitters, but Gwynn played for the Padres and their miserly owners who never gave Gwynn a great line up to protect and make pitchers pitch to him.
@@dannysart3990 I wouldn't say never.. the 98 team went to the world series..
Not even top 5
redsox141978 🤡🤡🤡
Was in the top 3.
