  • Klonoa is a 3D side-scrolling action game series whose first title was released by Namco in 1997. Set in a unique universe populated by a range of original characters, the game follows the hero, Klonoa, as he sets off on a journey to save the world. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first title in the series, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a remastered title combining both Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil.

    Klonoa is wonderful. It came out when I was into Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil (I was 15, 16) and for some reason I was really captivated by Klonoa. I just liked it and always played it. It's so cute with good game play and great music. Give it a go

    5:49 There isn’t a “major issue” with the story, the contrast between lighthearted, colorful levels, enemy’s, charming music, and bosses contrasting with the sometimes dark depressing story is why most Klonoa fans love this game! Must platformers don’t try to have a emotionally engaging story or characters (not that they should) but this game does and it gets pretty dark, which is why a lot of people (including myself) love and cherish this game! This has always been a thing with the Klonoa games, this is nothing new!

    I disagree in saying that the story of Door to Phantomile is bad, but it does throw out a lot of very specific worldbuilding ideas that get glanced over too quickly. They basically tried to fit a novella's worth of story content into the length of a cartoon short.

    Spoiler alert
    Klonoa is not really a dream. His presence in this world is like a strange dream. And the first game made clear he did not die. He just got send back to his home world.
    As someone who likes cute wholesome characters and Adventures that have a bit of a dark edge to them (I grew up with Digimon and my favorite series is Made in Abyss) I enjoyed the mild dark tone of the story.

  • @lenarmangum8630
    @lenarmangum8630 Před 2 lety +6

    7:26 Incorrect Klonoa doesn’t realizes he’s a dream or doesn’t exist, Klonoa is a “dream traveler” he’s meant to go to different worlds represented by drams such as; Phantomile or Lunatea where some sort of disaster/calamity is plaguing that world. Once he has cleared the world of their plight he has to forcefully with no will of his own leave all his friends, companions and the world he knew to then return to his own. Klonoa exists it’s just that he gets summoned into these worlds because he’s a “dream traveler” so he has to cure the world.

  • @lenarmangum8630
    @lenarmangum8630 Před 2 lety +6

    6:44 “Overdone the world building” how would you put that as a complaint? That’s what we Klonoa fans love about the game, we appreciate that the world, characters and lore are so fleshed out compared to other platformers and that the game isn’t afraid to take itself seriously at certain parts. It’s still cute and wholesome but the story can go some dark and serious places, that’s what we love about the series!

  • @Cri_Jackal
    @Cri_Jackal Před 2 lety +6

    You clearly did not read the dialogue, because you _decided_ not to care about the story.
    There's a difference between _taking itself seriously_ and _becoming darker in tone_ and you people clearly don't understand the difference.
    Half the reason people even love this series is because of the stories it told with the first two games, telling people to ignore it is the worst possible thing you could recommend.

    • @lenarmangum8630
      @lenarmangum8630 Před 2 lety +4

      That’s exactly what I’ve been saying, it’s obvious that this guy wasn’t paying close enough attention to the dialogue or subtext, because if he was he should’ve been able to understand the story easily. It’s not like the game just gets dark out of nowhere, it’s a gradual buildup, if he had actually read the dialogue he could’ve picked up on that stuff. That’s the reason why people like you and me love the Klonoa series because similarly to Kirby while it is cute, colorful and adorable there’s also a more deeper sinister story and lore underneath that exterior. To just completely ignore that and to tell people to skip it is just doing a massive disservice to the game.

    The story element is definitely better in the second game than it is in the first game. I mean it's still kinda weird, but at least it's somewhat more coherent. Honestly, the sequel is definitely the better game to judge the series by (though alone doesn't justify the price tag), and it's perfectly possible to go into the second game without having played the first and not really lose anything from it (I hadn't played DtP until some years after the sequel). In fact the plot of the first game doesn't come into the second at all. Even despite the issues with the first game's story though, it did manage to make me cry (granted, I am a massive cry baby), even playing through it again in the remake with its awkward in-game-graphic replacements for the CGI scenes.
    On normal difficulty, the game does ramp up in challenge. Particularly if you're going for all of the resident/doll collectables. It doesn't help that the remake's hit detection is a little wonky, particularly in normal mode, and punishes you for trying to shoot around a slight bend in the map shape or for skimming the model of an enemy with a wind bullet. So in that way, the remake is actually a bit harder than the originals, especially in areas where you have to grab enemies in mid air to avoid falling. In fact, honestly, the hit detection is my biggest complaint for the game - moreso than the lack of CGI cutscenes in the first game's remake or the flat shading style.
    From the financial side, a lot of people have complained about the price. Personally, I don't see it as overpriced for a game published by a big name (from its UK and US pricing), especially if you're taking into account that it's actually two games in one. But the regional pricing is awful and Namco should lose points just for that. Some regions in particular have to deal with outrageous prices. UK prices are one of the lesser of the problems, but you're still paying £40 for a game that's $40 (£33.60) in the US. Or £45 for the Nintendo eshop version (the physical copy was cheaper as a pre-order thing, but its RRP is in line with the digital version).
    Honestly, if you have nostalgia for this series and don't live in a region where the price is outright ridiculous and don't have the hardware/know-how/inclination for emulating, it's definitely worth it. If you're new to the series and live in the US, I'd probably recommend it too. If you live in a region with a price range closer in line with EU prices, I'd say go for it if you have the cash to spare, otherwise you might be better off waiting for a sale.
    Personally, I love the originals and I think the remakes are fine. But I don't know how much of that is nostalgia goggles and desperation for new Klonoa content to come out off the back of this remake.

    @griskin_8202 Před 2 lety +2

    It is a bit dear, but I'd totally recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in platformers, especially if you've got small kids - the first game's story IS nonsense, but the second has some lovely themes that, even as an adult, are important to hear

    • @lenarmangum8630
      @lenarmangum8630 Před 2 lety +3

      No it’s not “nonsense!” It has a great payoff and great emotional Waite! Because you’re playing the game getting time to experience all the different worlds/levels, meeting all the inhabitants and spending time getting to know them. Only for by the end to find out you don’t exist in this world and to have leave behind all the memories and friends you thought you knew forcefully yanked away from you! It’s very powerful stuff imo and one of the few times I’ve felt sad playing a platformer or any game in that manner.

    • @griskin_8202
      @griskin_8202 Před 2 lety

      @@lenarmangum8630 I don't disagree, the scene itself is pretty powerful, but I think it would've landed better if it felt more connected to the rest of the game, like if it had be foreshadowed or hinted at more than Huepow almost telling him *something* once before one of the final levels. As it stands, you could take that scene out and, off the top of my head, nothing would really change. I do really admire them ending on a more bittersweet note than you might've expected for this type of game, it's just the execution was a bit lacking for me.

    • @lenarmangum8630
      @lenarmangum8630 Před 2 lety +2

      @@griskin_8202 It IS foreshadowed very subtly by Huepow, Granny and Ghadius talking about a “dream that doesn’t belong in this world” also we already know not to trust Huepow because he has already tricked Klonoa once before. If you replay the game after the fact you can pick up on subtle little hints in the dialogue and Huepow’s reluctance and guilt later in the game.

The story has so many emotional impacts and payoffs that you won’t be getting if you just skip it, you’ll be missing out on all the characters, lore, plot points, stakes EVERYTHING! The story in Klonoa complements the gameplay you’ll be missing out on half of the experience if you just skip it!
