Imagine if you would get a stroke and get completely paralyzed | Kati Lepistö | TEDxTurku

  • Imagine if you would get a stroke and get completely paralyzed - you would not be able to walk or talk and there would be no possibility to recover. You would still understand and remember everything, including your feelings and your thoughts, but you would not be able to scream nor struggle. Not to mention getting away from your life situation - you would be trapped in your own body. How would you make life worth living?
Kati Lepistö is one of the most touching speakers of TEDx Turku 2015, because this story is not an “imagine if” case, but her reality. Kati’s dream was to work as an international model before this life-changing incident. With a fixed goal she entered the model world of Los Angeles and Milano, making her dream come true. One day this stroke turned her world upside down and Kati was forced to change her dreams of being a model to the life of living with quadriplegia.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I am recovering from a stroke and was paralyzed on my right side and at times I get very depressed. This woman, Kathy, is an inspiration and she brings me to tears. I know how she feels and I can see her spirit is beautiful. The love she has from her husband is beyond words. Going from being totally functional to paralyzed is heart breaking and I had to work at coming out of depression. I thought of suicide several times but then I knew it was selfish. Thank God for you Kathy, you have helped me in ways I cannot express. Huggs and prayers to you!!

beela rehman firstly I feel can imagine why there is no capital letter I also avoid because left hand is not available just wanted to say we too can be warrior e.g will give a glimpses of what i am engaging in to be a warrior ........
Everyone says WILL POWER & PGHYSIOTHARAPY are the only tools for rehab & recovery from POST BRAIN STROKE PARALYSIS; question is how to maintain high level of will power.
      1. Healthy activities - never let the mind be empty to harbor negative thoughts.
      2. Watching cheerful soothing program & events on television & social media.
      3. Busy yourself in creativities always related to recovery process, like making some kind of record of progress, after initial recovery start inventing exercises after seeing some relevant program on internet, in close conformity & parameters laid down e.g. healthy hand can be a yard stick for limits & dimensions (scope extent, measure & magnitude) [typing this all with TENS machine working on numbness of both feet]
      4. Always have missionary zeal in all activities, e.g. start thinking & planning how all your road to recovery can help fellow survivors & victims.
      5. Guard against negative affect of information, data & material published on internet most of which is advertisement oriented, however can be useful if carefully scrutinized; even found some pseudo, so called spiritualists & teachers hovering with victims & survivors commenting on paralysis related videos on CZcams trying to trap innocent but worried people in pain, was hurting to see such vultures.

such a loving and wonderful couple. I worked for years with many students that learned how to use alternative communication
devices with large boards and with computer assisted techniques. There are people inside bodies that we could dismiss if we
cannot communicate with them that is why it is so important to find ways of speech if possible.

Unfortunately this time we live in was foretold by Jesus as the last days+ would be nothing like it should be. I am only tryuto share my hope+ I am assured of this that we are promised an end to the mess mankind has made of every possible thing given to us by our creator + things returned to as they were many centuries ago. So many scriptures that give us this hope. Too much info + I am only putting this thought here because I am so uplifted by you Kati+ her parents who gave of themselves for their daughter. Thankyou so much for this + other videos. I have seen many on this subject + there are many that had this happen also who fully recovered after yrs of being” licked in”. She has little motions that kinds of reminds of people in rehab I've watched trying to get the nerves to go the right path as they're learning again. We won the chicken pox as a kid nut they're not all gone. There are some hideouts that will get out and cause shingles. And I'm quite sure that those chicken pox hideouts affect your nerves speed, the man told me u have significantly faster reaction times than most people. Could she try small amount of coconut oil..kills old chicken pox.. and it might remove the nerves lingering around in the nerve paths. I got up about 2 hours thinking on this because I was caring about her condition and it was buggging me. All I can do is do ..simple man thinking.

Depends on the stroke, some people recover, some are paralyzed on one side, some are paralyzed everywhere.

It is not stroke paralysis, it is Locked in syndrome and there is no to this day no specific treatment and Kati had the stroke in 1995

People do not always "recover" from a stroke. The brain damage is permanent; depending on what part of the brain is damaged, and how much, the patient may be able to regain some (or most) functions. It isn't possible for everyone.
