You know what I love about your videos? You inspire confidence in me. I watched this and thought I can do that! Thank you. You’re a wonderful artist and teacher.
I really appreciate this technique, especially when most water colorist talk about how seeing the pencil lines underneath the painting is a real big No-No. I guess it depends on the look you're going for, but like I said I really appreciate this technique a lot thank you so much for sharing
You have given me permission (again) to follow what I am into. Saying this is about the “pencil” sketch in several ways frees me. I started with pencil sketches then moved into a purist attitude toward watercolor where I eliminated the pencil completely and went ALL watercolor. Now I’m doing both but I’ve begun to enjoy mixing graphite pencil sketches with watercolor washes. Thank you for letting me know this is an okay path. This piece is outstandingly beautiful. Thanks for the links. I just filled in my first Bee watercolor sketchbook and followed your links to a new size, and the other company you like, and the woodless pencils too. Thank you.
I LOVE seeing the pencil with the paint; I feel you can really envision more of the steps the artist took to get to the finished piece. ❤️
I love how you mix things up all the time! This channel is a treasure.
Lovely, super useful comment to artists who draw and want to watercolor about how graphite goes from light to dark just like watercolor! And that quote at the end is one of my favorites from the Book of Matthew, soul strengthening.
Thanks Hajra! Oh so glad thats a favorite scripture. One of mine too. So glad you stopped by!
The way you talk is so comforting. Like I'm learning from an older brother or something. I like it. And this vid actually cleared a lotta my so thank you ❤️
Wow! This is just what I’ve been looking for. I’ve done a couple of pencil drawings that I wanted to color and didn’t have a clue what medium I could use on top of the graphite, if any. I was afraid it would make a muddy mess. I’m still afraid, but I think I’ll give it a try. Thanks, love your instruction and your work.
I have been a graphite guy since day 1. I can go anywhere and be contented with my pencil and pad. I like those wood less pencils.
I was just thinking about this kind of drawing painting and found this video and it was very helpful and encouraged me to try this
Just thank you Steve. As an almost beginner I am inspired to extend myself.
You are really a great artist who knows it all. Love your drawings in graphite, your sketches etc.
What a great idea! I have always loved the art of Claudia Nice. She first draws with pen and ink, then uses either watercolors or colored inks to create her works. I had thought about trying it with pencil, but worried if I would ruin a piece by learning the hard way. I never seem to be patient enough to use my brain and try something out first! LOL Recently I have purchased Derwent Graphitint pencils and am slowly learning how to use them. In case anyone doesn't know, they are watercolor pencils that come in earthy tones, due to them being made of water soluble graphite. I have also recently purchased some regular water soluble graphite pencils and am eager to see what can be made from them. Great video! Glad I found you!
I will have to give this watercolor over a graphite drawing a good try. Thank you for sharing your expertise and Scripture too.
I have been pleased with those Strathmore journals, overall. They can take a beating, and the watercolor one doesn't pill up when you work it.
As a newbie to Watercolors I so appreciate all your tips and how to. Thank you.
The Indian man's face is outstanding! Thanks for the demonstration and the tip that less is more.
Why I did not make this connection before I do not know. Your comment about the relationship of the white of the paper coming thru was spot on. I love to pencil sketch and my favorite challenging art form is watercolor. Trying to master the white of the paper with my pencil or watercolor is my favorite struggle. With a pencil however I can erase, thus control. Watercolor truely has a “mind of its own”. For some odd reason I find the challange more appealing.
I was thinking about trying watercolors over graphite soon and see how it turns out. Glad you made this video, I will have a better idea of what to expect. I do a similar thing with watercolor over inkwashes and I love it.
I love how much his eyes really popped as you added that skin tone!
You are so talented. I know they say you can LEARN to draw and I have gotten better, but you are awesome. Thank you for doing this as I have wondered if this were possible and never tried to do it.
L Barge I've been using oil color for portraits for the past 30 years or more and lately during covid-19 lock down I started using all kind of medias. been oil color my passion was fun to try other medias. I even used pastel and my granddaughter was my model. it turned out great!!!Today I just thought about using water color over pencil, I just love pencil drawing and I'm very good at it :) lol I didn't know if I you could do it and I google it and there you were !!! water color is very difficult to use and I'm going to have lots of fun...thank you Sir this is going to be my first...thank you again to teach me your techniques.
I love this idea! You got just the right balance of graphite and color. I need to try this. Thank you for the inspiration.
thanks. well done! I'm totally a beginner with drawing and painting. I will try this.
You are a beautiful artist! I cannot draw a straight line but I watch the way you add colo to your sketches. TFS.
Very concise and to the point tutorial. Thank you, you are a very talented artist! Sometimes people focus too much on the rendering, although yours is beautiful I sometimes get disappointed when the rendering overtakes the original composition... love your technique of building up.
This was a wonderful video! You are such a gifted landscape painter, but your portraits are great too. Just shows what years and years of experience will yield. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you 🙏 for this new for me drawing technic. I love it so much !!!
This is my zone. I live in pencil to watercolor. tyvm for teaching me that I am not the only one
Gorgeous.
Beautiful, subtle choice of colours. Wonderful drawing.
This was very fun to watch! Interesting subject matter and incredible talent combination provided a pleasant and captivating art work. Then you ended the video, as usual, with scripture from my favorite book. Thumbs up, for sure.
thanks, I'm always seeing videos where you try your best to make light lines, I'll relax and just draw in this way on occasion. It looks great.
Thank you for a really beautiful sketch. I loved the gentle Watercolour tones you added, just made him look more real... Can almost feel that beard and mustache they look so real. You gave him such expressive eyes... Thank you for a really interesting and informative video, and for sharing your talent.
Wow that’s great fun to watch your techniques and explanation of why you used what type pencils during the drawing process. I have been sticking with my mechanical pencil for the time being.
Love it. I'd love to see your explanation of drawing faces. Like proportions and stuff. But also those tips about keeping your eyes looking in the same direction and stuff. So fascinating. Thanks!
What a great idea! I never thought of painting over a sketch but I'm on it next! Thanks Steve!
I've never tried coloring graphite drawing. I'm gonna have to try this
Excellant demo, I enjoyed watching this. Love the combination of pencil and water color.
OMGosh I love this!!!!!! Trying to stretch my wings in my drawing as a whole, and recently added portraits as I was told I would be good at it. This is perfect timing to give me even more ideas. Just love the entire concept. THANK YOU!
Oh my goodness.........you are amazing Steve! I really, really like this picture!
So grateful that I was led to your channel & appreciate all that you teach. Blessings!
ooo.. love this,, very fresh looking leaving most of the graphite details,, really REALLY lovely!
What a talent to draw! Amazing your painting. Thanks to share.
Gorgeous. And even though I've not much of any ART for years. I do know I have some pencil-drawing skills. I'm anxious to try some "wc over pencil" now! 💜
This was great, Steve. I do quite a bit of under drawing with my watercolor painting, but never have used watercolor over a drawing. I can't wait to try it!
Great drawing. I had not considered using graphite as the griselle under the painting.
I've been rolling this idea around in my head. I'm glad I'm subscribed to your channel because you are a terrific teacher and an unbelievable artist. I searched for how to do this and of course this popped up. I love it
Very nice! Thanks for reminding us that this is a thing we can do! I just bought a 6B to 4H set from Arteza. Can't wait to try this. 👍
very good video. I love this type of work and I also love more mature faces with lots of character.
This is exactly what I needed to watch! Thank you so much for the inspiration, your work is amazing.
I love the look of this portrait so much! Thank you for this video...and all the other videos too!
Ooh that's so wonderful
That was fantastic watching you create this piece.
Love the look of graphite and watercolour!
Wow..I loved watching this portrait come to life..brilliant video!!
Positively brilliant! You inspire my confidence. Thanks.
Love this video! The faces you do utterly amaze me! I actually did the same thing last week. But I did a very detailed drawing then printed it on watercolor paper and painted. I have a matching pair now and love them together. I'd post a pic but dont know how! Lol!
Great video Steve! 😁 I love how this came out & you started with a really interesting photo. I can't wait for unsplash to come to android. This is a technique I try to do, but go to far. I'm going to give it a go again tomorrow. Awesome example of the balance I have been trying to get. Thanks for sharing! 😃 I hope you are doing well my friend. 🤗
Thanks Val. You can access Unsplash through a browser. So that might help. I often go too far with this also. I really had to hold back. Definitely give it a try.
Just awesome Steve and can hardly wait to get started on a drawing/painting today, thanks and maybe another one in the future.
Thanks for this--I didn't know it was possible. One more new thing to try!
Wonderful video and great information as usual Steve. Love that you are doing more on portraits.....thanks.
I'm beginner , I love your drawings, it's really helpful ,thank you so much
Great video! This is a technique I must try. Love your choice of reference for the drawing. Very interesting character. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Steve~
I absolutely loved this tutorial, and throughout the entire video I kept saying “WOW”. Your precision and accuracy is amazing! You’re a wonderful teacher, and you take the time to explain what you’re doing. That’s what I need. I took an art course in college, but that was years ago, and decided to start doing it again. Thankfully I found someone who takes the time to teach instead of hurrying the process so fast I have to watch it over and over. Thank you for that. I subscribed to your channel, and can only hope that I get almost as good as you. Hopefully just as good! I’m just like you as well, I love trying new things, so this is sure going to be a lot of fun!

I just watched this again and wow! This is so inspiring and informative! You know that I am a big fan and you never cease to amaze me with your talent and generosity. Thank you so much Steve.
Thanks so much Kathryn!
“This isn’t a formal sketchbook....” dude, don’t sell yourself short lol thats already way better than what I can draw.
Thank you for sharing your talent with us Your one of my favorite water color artists I ve learned a lot from you threw out the years of painting myself. Keep the videos coming 👍👍✨
Thank you for sharing your talent with us. That was fascinating to watch and I always learn so much from you.
That's a really good sketch. I don't know why I'm surprised as you're a wonderful watercolorist as well. I can't even begin to imagine how much my own painting would improve if I worked on my drawing ability, or inability, lol. 😂
Drawing is the key to improvement, hands down!
Thanks, this was a great Sunday project. I had a boat load of fun.
Hi Steve, I loved this when I seen it on Instagram and this video was such a treat to watch. Thank you ! 💞💫
This was enjoying to watch, thank you for sharing your talent with this gorgeous portrait! So beautifully done!
Fantastic work, and a massive help, just done a watercolour portrait, with pencil, this helped so much thank you
Fabulous!
Every done a self portrait? You have an interesting face - perhaps something to consider for a future video?
So amazing to watch. Just really amazing. Great info about painting over pencil.
Wow! To be able to draw like that...fantastic!
Great combination! The drawing is great, with, as you say, just a limited amount of watercolour, just to enhance what is there in graphite and add that bit of extra flavour. It was good that you gave us a glimpse too of your reference picture; I find that really helpful as immediately one can see how you handled various detail or texture. I must admit though, I would like to see you do one of those works you mentioned where you really got into the colour. Thanks a lot for this.
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing, I'm working on a pencil & watercolor piece right now and it's helpful to see your technique :)
Travel. Yeah, I wondered about that. So I'm guessing that would happen more with a more watery wash? It's a lovely technique, I may re-visit some of my old sketches and paint them! 🙂
Loved it Steve! Something I'm learning is that one of the many great things about watercolor is it's such a versatile medium. Thanks for showing us a different approach!
So very true Steve. Love the medium for that very reason, among others. Thanks so much for stopping by, watching and commenting!
By the way, I'm hoping you're seeing a nice bump in subs. I've tweeted your channel and made mention in my community CZcams feed. Your talent and experience deserves a lot more viewers.
Oh my goodness, have I ever! I was trying to figure out where everyone was coming from... I can't thank you enough Steve, that's incredibly generous of you!! In less than a week I've almost tripled my subscribers... I hope I get to shake your hand one of these days! Please let me know if you make it out to Arizona for a visit, it'd be a hoot to get out and sling some paint together!
Oh good! I was hoping so. No thanks needed. I had generous CZcamsrs help me out when I first started and its time to pay it forward. Plus, its no effort when you're excited to share a talented artist such as yourself with other viewers. As for AZ., yes, I will be actually. Maybe I can meet you, not sure. I have an Uncle that lives in Scottsdale and my wife's sister lives in Glendale. We are planning a 40th anniversary trip to the Grand Canyon next May. We'll see. Maybe a brief stop for coffee or something on the way from Phoenix to GC. Prescott is about midway am I right?
That's right! Prescott is centrally located in AZ. I've love to have you out to the studio if you have the time... but if you find you're crunched for time, I'm happy to meet you somewhere. Let me know and I'll make it happen =) Paint on!
This is absolutely exquisite!
I am definetly going to try this out.Btw awesome video as always.
Thank you, this portrait is simply beautiful
Very nicely done Steve. I have several sets of those Kohinoor pencils. You have me tempted to bring them out again and use them. But this was terrific! I bought a couple of those Bee paper watercolor journals also and have already filled one up. even though it isn’t top of the line cotton paper, for a journal it is a step above cellulose/ wood pulp paper. I find that when I use a pentalic aqua journal on a daily basis then pull out my Saunders Waterford or Arches 100% cotton papers It takes a few minutes to adjust and get the feel for the level of absorbency again. It feels strange, and then there’s that feeling of “ahhhh, yes. It feels like home!”
Thanks Sharon. Good observations about cellulose vs cotton. I agree. Its why a few, I think, prefer cellulose. They don't like having to adjust for more water, at least at first. As for Bee? Yeah, it's the "little paper that could," LOL! As you said its not the tops but continues to be adequate and better than the average pulp journal. Oh and welcome back to CZcams!
I really enjoyed your approach. Many years ago I used the cheapest watercolor pencils with pencils and sharpys. My family didn't figure it out since it was very different. I Love Color and whenever I can put it in it will be there. I haven't tried the journals. I used to have them before they burnt up but I can't wait to try the Stillman &Birns.I honestly have been so busy working in commissions!! How exciting. Thank you for the tips.I pay more attn to detail now just wish I had more time (etc)to really get those techniques down. Wish I had an uncle like you. Wonderful artist and teacher. And ohh man I could use some pointers on a project/ commission. I scare myself to death and think it won't be liked. It's worse than the dream when you show up in class in your skivies. And pricing my work is challenging.... what a mess. Pr 15:22,23
Really awesome, I want to try this pencil and watercolor now
Thank you for posting this....so wonderful to watch.
Beautiful demo. Thank you !
That turned out beautiful! I can’t wait to try it!
stunning!
Love love this look!!!
That turned out really nice! That definitely looks like a fun way to work. I usually think either/or when it comes to drawing and painting but this looks like something fun to try. 👍
Yeah it was a blast. I've felt the same as you for years. One or the other. After starting this channel and doing more plein air I've started experimenting with quicker sketching techniques. Ones where I can quickly capture an image add color later. Thanks for watching Brian!
I really loved this video. I like this style and the grafite held up for you. For me not so much. I think I get my brush too wet. I try not to but it's hard to judge. Thanks for the demonstration. Beautiful painting or should I say drawing.
Really nice watching you work. Thanks 😊
Thankyou very informative and watchable ❤
Absolutely fascinating work 🙌🙌🙌💖💖💖😌😌😌
AMAZING, Steve!! Btw... those are my favorite graphite pencils, for the same reasons that you gave.
So so so happy I found your channel!
Gorgeous!
