  • In today’s video, I’ve got some big news that's stirring up the Avatar fandom. There's an update about the Roku novel you've got to hear about, and we're diving into the latest buzz around the Netflix show that's got everyone talking (yes, it has to do with Sokka’s sexism). Plus, there's a whisper about the original creators that might just blow your mind (and will surely make some of you angry). Trust me, you're going to want to stick around for this.

This also happened for the new Disney Plus version of Diary of a Wompy Kid. Jeff Kinney portrayed Greg as the victim because he disliked how he portrayed him in the original book. So it’s definitely believable that the avatar creators could have disliked elements of the original show and tried to change the characters

As to the Sokka's sexism, we've seen a picture of Sokka training with Suki, so I think it has just been toned down, not removed. Well see though. AARON EHASZ. Why is barely anyone talking about Aaron Ehasz, the main head writer in the ATLA cartoon? He seems to have had a falling out with Mike and Bryan, that's why he hasn't worked with them since ATLA ended. He wasn't part of the Shyamalan TLA, he was not part of the Legend of Korra, and he's still not part of Avatar Studios now...which is all incredibly weird to me given how HUGE a role he played in creating ATLA as a whole.
If Mike and Bryan stayed with the Netflix ATLA (NATLA), I have a feeling they would have vetoed most of the Aaron Ehasz ideas from the og ATLA, in favor of _their own_ canon that they themselves established in Legend of Korra (e.g. the Spirit World filled with functionless, decorative spirits labeled "good spirit" and "bad spirit," versus the spirits in ATLA that had real-world functions and were neither "just good" or "just evil," the Avatar being a representation of "ultimate good" even though in ATLA that was NEVERRR the case, etc.).
Everybody seems to forget that Mike and Bryan were executive producers on Shyamalan's TLA. They only started claiming "it's not our movie" AFTER the movie was received poorly. Thing is, they signed up for that crap and they could have BACKED OUT of Shyamalan's TLA like they did with NATLA if they had any real integrity.

I also have not liked how it’s been ignored that creators who do something in one medium of entertainment often cannot do well in other mediums of entertainment. Book writers often get upset about how filmmakers translate their books to the big screen, but they themselves don’t really know how to make something work on screen versus in a book.
I’m the case of avatar, the writers know how to do animated series, but maybe not a live action series. I don’t know, just been thinking a lot about this untalked about aspect of the creators leaving.

Honestly, I do think the sexism of the Northern Water Trive is far more important than the sexism of Sokka. Sokka's arc in book 1, generally speaking, is about humility, and looking down on women is just one little aspect of it that wasn't really all that prominent in the original show. Meanwhile, in the Northern Water Trive, sexism IS pretty much the center of the problem.

the sokka stuff is exactly what i was expecting. ppl seem to be quickly jumping on the hate train, saying they were “cutting” his sexism when the quote and the first article said that they were just toning it down. Which i’d assume would be making it more subtle. Like you said about the actor playing zuko in the trailer reaction video, it seems like his performance is less anger, more desperation. A small subtle change that fits better with zuko’s character as a whole. Still glad they’ll have kataras stuff in the north, that whole plot made her my favorite character👍

I don't think there's sexism, even in the original series. It's history and an accurate depiction of how primitive tribes worked. And I mean worked because it worked. That's why they did it. Sexism is believing one sex is better in general. But in specific categories, each sex might be better or worse at certain things. Like, for instance, women are better at multitasking, while men are better at spacial reasoning. Men are stronger, larger, and have thicker bones and bigger muscles. Women have a higher tolerance for pain, lower center of gravity.
Even the Northern Tribe wasn't sexist. Women heal while men fight. In the Netlfix series, they were clear that empathy and compassion is required for effective healing, and women are generally more of those things. It's biological, and scientific. If they had men fighting and women standing back healing the men during battle, like in so many war games, they actually could have been most effective.

THAT alone was enough for me to be excited that, yes it’s not going to be the exact same but just retold.
House of The Dragon is essentially a similar situation. The book “Fire and Blood” is a three sided PPV “hear-sayers” account of the battle and interpersonal relationships of the characters of the warring sides in the battle of the Dance of Dragons but as if it had been told a few years later after and some details are missing or forgotten . But the show itself is the TRUE accounting of the prologue and the subsequent war between Targaryen families that follows.
The original show of ATLA is like one POV of the story of Aang and his journey.

After having seen the live-action, I can see and understand why the OG show creators left the project. While it does hit enough of the story peats to be similar enough, it ultimately isn't a faithful adaptation to the cartoon. It's very similar to how Disney does their live-action remakes of their classic cartoons, where they have the appearance and moments to appear like the original, but ultimately fail to make me believe this is a live-action representation.
With that said, there are some changes and additions that I did like. Azula is given more screen-time, and it actually is used well (for the most part). Even the actor they got for Ozai does an amazing job as the character that I love seeing him on screen. I would even argue that they made him a bit more three-dimensional without sacrificing who he is from the cartoon or giving us too much of him. Speaking of casting choices, the actors they got for Aang, Sokka, and Iroh have won me over. I also like that we get more scenes with previous Avatars that we only got a glimpse of in the cartoon. But the biggest highlight is the bending in this show. It is far better than the movie and they use it to the fullest.
Sadly, the live-action also takes certain liberties with mashing episodes and storylines together. I won't spoil any of them here, but a majority of the changes don't really help or make much sense, especially in how they might do seasons 2 & 3 (if Netflix greenlights the show for more seasons). There are a couple of changes and additions that make sense and help with developing the characters, but for every good change/addition, there's two that are bad. As for the actresses for Katara and Azula, I'm having a hard time buying that they are the characters. Even the guy they got for Zuko isn't winning me over. And how they decided to portray Avatar Roku really didn't sit well with me.
But the biggest flaw with the show is in the writing, especially the dialogue. Where the cartoon did have moments of exposition and speeches, it ultimately did a great job of limiting those moments and instead just putting more focus on showing us what the characters were going through and how they felt. I would even argue that it was the voice-actors who made the dialogue work in the cartoon.
In the live-action, there are multiple scenes in a single episode of characters giving speeches about hope and how they feel, not to mention the exposition moments that just tell us what was going on, what happened, and what was going to happen. There's even a moment of someone literally repeating the cartoon intro (word-for-word) and having zero emotion behind it.
While I can't say that the first season is the worst adaptation I've seen, especially when comparing it to the movie, it ultimately fails to do the cartoon justice. When I look at the two shows right now, I see one that treated its audience with respect and allowing us to piece together certain things for ourselves, while another doesn't trust its audience to understand what is going on and just decides to tell us what is going on.

    • @AntoineBandele
      @AntoineBandele  Před 3 měsíci

We truly can't know why they left. After all, Mike DiMartino did appear at the premiere so there is a possible odd dynamic going on there. I'm sure the full story will come out about it all. But no time soon. I do feel as though some in the fanbase are making a lot of assumption those. I can't really blame them though. Not when there is so little info about why the breakup happened exactly.

      @tjjordan4207 Před 3 měsíci

@@AntoineBandele From what I can tell, despite not knowing the details, the creators did leave the project on good terms. They voiced their disapproval and concerns, but ultimately left without crossing the line in any way that would jeopardize the people in charge, similarly to how Henry Cavill parted ways with The Witcher and Superman in DC. Sure, them leaving did cause some concerns for the fans, but ultimately was peaceful, which is very respectable.
To be honest, I believe that the showrunners for the cartoon tend to get a little too much credit for the creation and success. Much like how everyone credits George Lucas for Star Wars, it was ultimately a team effort from those involved that helped make it as great as was, and I feel the same way about the cartoon. Which is why I'm not being too hard on the live-action, because I do believe those involved did try to recapture the magic and make something good.

Sokka was not sexist. He was a kid who misunderstood genre roles in society. The northern water tribe adheres to traditional gender roles because it brings out the best of both men and women. One is not better than the other, they have different strengths and weaknesses. When brought together they complement each-other. They can do more together, than alone. Sokka learns this as the series progresses. He saw gender roles and only saw weaknesses when compared to men, not thinking their the strength or woman is different. As time goes he is witness to woman strong in their womanhood which literally adds to his own strength as a man. He no longer makes wisecracks about women as he sees how powerful complementary roles can be. Are there exceptions to the rule? Yes, Katara wanting to master he water bending for self defense. Keep in mind, that most woman are not usually interested learning self defense much less training for war. Why force women to do something they have no desire or inclination to do? But for those who do, let them try. And we see this in season 1 in Avatar. That Pakku is convinced to let those who have the desire try. Notice in the cartoon Katara was still the only girl who wanted to train in self defense. (Of course it's a bunch of crap for Katara to call herself a master in this show when she had not trained for decades. That's that feminist crap for you. The rank of master is earned, not given. In the cartoon she actually trains and earns the title after years of training). That is real life. Men and woman are different in their desires, goals, and capabilities. You have to stop trying to force one into being the other. They are strong in who they already are.

This is something I've suspected since it was mentioned Bryke left the show. It's something I've seen happen with plenty of creators who get an opportunity to expand on or rewrite past material. There is this urge as a creative to go back and correct yourself or tweak things you've already created for better or for worse. These kinds of changes can often be divisive at best. I think the George Lucas comparison is a really good one but another good one might be Rick Riordan with the recent PJO series. I'm not a part of that fandom but from what I've seen through osmosis is that Rick oversaw this show and made quite a few changes here and there that received mixed responses from fans. Some loved the changes from book to tv show, others hated it. I imagine Bryke would have approached things similarly... though I don't doubt if they would have wanted to make some more extreme changes to atla that tie it into tlok a little better too. Like I could see them wanting to show or hint at raava or something here and I know that definitely would've caused a stir.

To me all that'll matter in the live action is how well the character dynamics and interactions land, how they'll execute certain core character traits and their 'changes'. Will the presentation of each Tribe, Nation, Kingdom be treated with similar subtle nuances that shows even though the Fire Nation is the overarching enemy(due largely in how the leaders are/have been/became). There are still quality elements to their culture. Just like there are drawbacks with the North Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom. Even though those 'sources' may fit with how Bryke usually operate that doesn't guarantee its coming from a strong position, given the source they're claiming is on the side in favor of Netflixs position. And imo, if they had made some changes that better incorporated small elements of what the Lion Turtle, bending lore get shown in ATLOK than I'm one who has no qualms about it. Seeing as that was always the central lore. It was just limited in explanation, which is why the Lion turtle ending in ATLA could've had greater significance and impact on the viewer than how I see it as Aang being an outlier in all Avatars history. Maybe since their an origin entity to the world they knew times where headed towards being needed in certain future situations.

However, one thing they should absolutely change is that deus ex machina rock/lionturtle in the finale. Aang doesn't have to do anything, make any decisions, master the avatar state, or even use the elements he'd spent the entire show learning for some reason.
He just accidentally gets knocked into the Avatar state and then resolves the conflict using a new ability that was conveniently given to him a few minutes ago. It's a glaring flaw in the show to anyone who doesn't watch it with childhood 'this-show-is-amazing' glasses.

I think he's very often overlooked by many fans as one of the OG Avatar creators, and the fact that both Korra and The Dragon Prince are good but not universally acclaimed as ATLA is the proof that the Last Airbender was a masterpiece only thanks to all the great people who worked on it, and if you take just one ingredient away, it just won't work the same. Another overlooked creator is Giancarlo Volpe, who after Avatar will later go on directing a small project called "Across the Spiderverse".

They allegedly wanted to set the Avatar world in more contemporary terms and Netflix wanted to stick way closer to the original show, albeit with some changes that would appeal to a broader crowd. Sokka’s sexism removed from this version is no controversy compared to what would’ve been like if what these other sources say is true. Speaking of which, I don’t care as much that they have removed that sexist arc but I think it’s a missed opportunity for Netflix since that is an integral part of Sokka’s growth as a character in the series. Having said that, as long as they manage to pull off his sarcasm and wit, I won’t be too bothered.

"Leaked Information" and "My inside source" can be very iffy. But this video was an awesome view of how we need to be open, but skeptical to that.
It sounds like the Netflix creators are already needing to strike a balance between the original content, and the live action changes which, by necessity, will already happen, such as the stretching out of the time period and the aging of characters.
It makes sense that if the original creators were trying to use the live adaptation as a way to create entirely new viewpoints on the Four Nations (which is their right, it's their world), that they might clash with the Netflix team who wanted adaptation. Live Action adaptation makers have to be cautious about ensuring they are faithful enough and present enough of the OG material, or they inevitably get pulverized in reviews.
It sounds like some things are already going to be extremely different from the original - consider interpersonal dynamics because of the jump in age.
Having 15 year old Aang pursuing a 17 year old Katara is a quantum leap from the 12 and 14 year old originals. Sokka and Suki and Mai and Zuko will all be adults by Book 3: Fire.
The change from a story of children to a story of teens & adults is a **huge** difference from the way the original presented things.
Another is Fire Lord Sozin being a functional, living, breathing element in the story, as opposed to simply a shadow over the majority of the plot.
These were some awesome insights, and for my part, i completely agree that we should wait and see how things play out before we judge. Awesome video.

Well, I always suspected that Bryke leaving had more to do with their George Lucas syndrome than them wanting to safeguard their creation and it was pretty much confirmed to me after I watched the show(which I had gripes with but overall enjoyed).
I've said this before and I'll say it again, I couldn't give a flying fun that they removed Sokka's sexism from his characterisation, it was played for laughs to begin with. And I don't say this idly, I am a sexist misogynist dinosaur, I truly am. And once again, having seen the show, I think it was a good decision to highlight Sokka's other salient qualities above a joke that gets dropped 4 episodes in.
I will say to your comments about Bryke and Ehasz, Legend of Korra had interesting plot elements... That get ruined, but the Dragon Prince has far better characters even though the story and plot are kind of hit and miss. I used to be in the Ehaszian camp but have also realised it was the teamwork that made ATLA lighting in a bottle(wow, a story about the importance of balance and teamwork benefited from teamwork and balance, shocked Pikachu face).

Honestly, my suspicions were pretty much confirmed when Bryan said something along the lines that he disliked Yue’s character and plot line on BTE and would have removed it. It also aligns with the latest PJO adaptation and how many changes Rick Riordan has made. I strongly believe creators should not actually have a gigantic role in adaptations other than to approve the Final Cut.
I don’t really know what changes to the worldbuilding Bryke would have wanted to make. But I was under the impression that Netflix would also be pulling stuff from the entirety of the canon - comics, books, spin-offs - for this series. Is there truth to that?

I'll wait for the Show to drop and then I'll judge this Sexist Sokka Issue Change thing!
About the reason the Creators left Netflix...

Fans wanted a some kind of 1 to 1 Live Action Adaptation.
But what the show gave the fans was not a 1 to 1 adaptation.
The PJ Show added good and bad changes that fans did and did not like. Overall! The Percy Jackson Show even with the Creator is involve got mix reviews from fans of the Book series.

The truth is we will probably never know why the original creators left, but Mike and Bryan without them and without their team and without Nickelodeon we wouldn’t even have a animated show, let alone a Netflix series. I respect what they did with the animated show. I want to hope the people behind the Netflix show respect the legacy of the show and adapt it as well as they can. For me, it’s a timeless story. I just want. A well told story. I don’t need the drama and politics. Hollywood is a big place. Netflix is a big company. Lots of people say one thing and mean another. We can argue on wether or not the original creators leaving is a bad sign or not but the reality is they left and didn’t want to continue working on the live action show but we can hope that whoever did adapt the Netflix version respect Mike and Bryan and do the best job they did with their property. Nobody sets out to create a bad show, especially remaking one that is as beloved as avatar. I don’t even know if M Night set out to make a bad movie or he just had to work with what he had. I think the movie studio could’ve done so much better with avatar when it came to film.

There were so many other talented people with a hand in the original, and I really don't believe that the show would be as beloved if only Mike and Bryan worked on it. Some of the things we love the most about the original are because of other people. All of the best tv show and movies are the ones where many people work together to take the first idea and turn it into something bigger. That's why we have directors, writers, producers, and so on. Mike and Bryan are not the heart of the original and I truly don't care that they left the adaption. Honestly though, if the Northern Watertribe still doesn't train females to learn waterbending for fighting, and all the men still left the Southern tribe to fight in the war, leaving Sokka as the "man" of the village... It would make percect sense for him to have sexist beliefs, such as "men are better at fighting". That wouldn't be a negative reflection of his character, because it was ingrained in him from his culture. In fact, it would show his strength. The fact that he was able to overcome such deeply rooted prejudices, and take accountability for his mistakes. That he was able to put aside his beliefs and admit he was wrong, and willing to learn, rather than stubbornly clinging to what he has been taught his whole life. That would only make his character MORE likeable because it shows his maturity.
It would be weirder for him to grow up *not* having those beliefs. Plus, having him not be sexist from the start, doesn't mean as much for his character, because he didn't have to grow as a person.
I'm not saying this ruins the show or should stop anyone from witching it. Some people are definitely overreacting. But I do think it was a mistake from a writing point of view. Plus the reasons given don't make sense, because having Sokka learn that lesson would make him *more* likeable as a character and as a person.

Except in the original show Southern Water Tribe waterbending women were fighters Hama for example. And it's made clear the reason Gran Gran left the Northern Water Tribe was because they were extremely sexist. Meaning the Southern Water tribe was way more open minded. Sokka growing up in a very small village with very few men around because of the war should have given him way more respect for Women. Him being Sexist in the show basically lasted like 3 or 4 episodes and was really only played out either for specific story purposes like Angering Katara, being upset he got beat by the Kyoshi warriors or played for Gags like making Katara sow his pants back up. You can basically dial his sexism back to just the Kyoshi Warriors portion of the arc and it still play out fine

The idea of creators wanting to change things on the first story because it didn't feel good enough, I understand that and I find it a good and relatable reason because it can get boring and not as fun doing the same thing again with zero changes, kind of like why nobody likes the Disney live-action remakes. Still, doing something like that results in continuity errors and when they get involved, they're NEVER going to be as better as the first and it's basically betraying the fans of the original work that way. Sure, you can always tell a new story to tweak the lore or adapt it again from a new and intriguing point of view or slight change to make the story feel unique by changing forms or not (like how the game "Avatar TLA: Quest For Balance" reworked events of the original storyline) but by doing what they were going to do here if they had stayed ESPECIALLY with how M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN handled the storytelling and worldbuilding and how much fans LoVeD that- yeah, fans would have HATED it SO MUCH. Still, I have hope and I have a good feeling that the people writing it who ARE fans of the original know what they're doing. I hate the live-action Shyamalan movie for the same reasons all of you do and I hope this series can restore the honor (Zuko reference slightly intended) it deserves. And with Netflix's One-Piece and how things are ACTUALLY going behind the scenes, I am more than convinced they're going to damn try and maybe even do a really really good job that could make it better than the original series (yeah, I said it, fight me m8)
Also to clarify something, I am not a huge die-hard fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender but I am trying to become enough of a fan that I understand it. The show's three seasons long and with so much stuff happening some degrading or upgrading in quality without warning, it makes it hard to watch. That's why I'm excited to see the Netflix show: it's going to put perspective on something I am familiar with and tell me the story in a new and interesting way that I can understand while at least TRYING to capture the original magic of the first series. I can't wait to see the lore of this series and how it gets bigger.
Also, I'm going to check out the darker Avatar Chronicles novels, too, for vibes and emotions and stuff
