Glazing Possibilities- 28 Different Approaches to Glazing Pottery!

  • This video is preparing my Ceramics students to glaze their pieces at the end of the semester.
In this video, I glaze 28 wheel thrown bowls. We use stoneware glazes (cone 5 and 6 midfire) on our Standard 153 stoneware, a nice midrange firing stoneware. I used Coyote brand cone 6 glazes and underglazes in the carved design grooves on a few bowls to keep the stoneware glazes separate when they fire. I now use Standard 125 which is a lovely cone 6 stoneware that looks the same as the 153~
Here is a link to the follow up video showing the final glaze results!! Here is a link to a Googleslide presentation (in pdf form) which shows the results- also viewable in the next video! drive.google.com/file/d/1MXUl...
If you would like to go directly to a technique, here is a list with timestamps of when those techniques appear in the video. Also, check the PART 2 video for the final results too: • Part 2 Final Glaze Re...

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my CZcams channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

The pdf is absolutely wonderful. I opened a second browser and watched them side by side. I too was amazed at your organization. I had Uni of Cincinnati art teachers when I first started (now in Fl) and they were not nearly as organized or as helpful. You were so good during COVID too. This video is very inspiring and practical, Your's students are really lucky to have such a great teacher. I loved the idea of kiln ticket too :). If You will do some more videos in the future about glazing, perhaps You could include how to glaze coil pots or pots with crayons decoration. thank You for sharing with us.

Your studio is so beautifully organized! The dry sanding makes me nervous about silica dust. It looks like just a small amount, but wetting before sanding off bits might be nice.

Absolutely!! The only sanding is actually using a grinding stone, or sometimes my abrasive pads- and I normally encourage them to use water! I never allow kids to sand greenware- and when they use my grinder cart outside on their glaze fired pieces, they always use a mask!

Wish there was more on youtube for the historical glazes....love the blue shards I find in Maine from the old trash piles. The coins date my favorite trash pile to 1783 so the blue pottery shards should be roughly around that time period...never seen such a beautiful blue.
