    I'd also note that not only did Weird Al parody it, Charmillionaire was actually a fan of it and bragged that the parody would just help him sell more records. You know, vs Coolio or Eminem who either fought the parody or interfered with Al's ability to promote it.
    I'm not surprised the guy turned out to be one of the few in the music industry who's legitimately business savvy.

      Reminds me of what Orson Scott Card said about fanfiction when he was asked why he stopped fighting against people publishing fanfiction about Ender's Game.
      "I realize now that those people are basically just publishing advertisements for my book. Why would I or anyone want to stop that?"
      Angus Young said something similar about AC/DC shirts.

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Před 4 lety +85

      @@qty1315 As one who writes fanfiction, I've never understood why someone would go out of their way to ban something that's truly harmless. The original creation is still there and can forever be enjoyed just as-is. Why deny people their fun? Choke-holding people into viewing your characters and world only as you want them viewed sort of limits the experience. You read a book or watch a show, and maybe have a few conversations about it...but never can you show others maybe a different interpretation or expand that fiction's universe. You're stuck with only what was given. How...dull.
      The biggest reason I've heard for this is to promote people to write original works but not everyone wants to do that. Writing a book is work, and not just the initial world-building but the publishing and book touring as well. It's a job. A person might tinker with a car for fun but that doesn't mean they want to be a full-blown mechanic. Same with writing fanfiction, it's just for fun.
      And sorry, I ranted, lol.

      +CommanderFreddy I can imagine that being a plot twist in some political thriller. Like, you have this street thug character who just swears and does drugs the whole movie, and at the end he's revealed to be the mastermind behind assassinating the president or some other huge conspiracy.
      Now that I think about it, has this kind of thing ever been done in a movie?

  • @MegCazalet

    Back in the mid-late 2000s we even had at least 2 sodas come out based on “purple drank”, the cough syrup/codeine/soda mix that was first popular in Houston. One was called, naturally, Drank, an “anti-energy drink” that featured relaxing ingredients like natural sleep aid melatonin and calming valerian root. The slogan was “Slow Your Roll”. I think it also used “Get Your Lean On” but I may be mixing that up with another similar brand. It tastes kind of citrusy, and is lightly carbonated.
    Then there’s “Purple Stuff”, basically the same relaxing ingredients. It does have a grape flavor like something originally based on cough syrup should, in my mind. (Not that I’ve ever had the illicit stuff to know. what flavor profile it had.) The can design is fun, cartoonish and crowded with words; not very relaxing, visually, but it added to the novelty and for a few years I had one displayed on a shelf of kitschy tchotchkes. I’ve tried both of those brands, plus a somewhat similar but even less carbonated drink brand Neuro’s Sleep and Bliss Relaxation versions, which Kim Kardashian used to gush about. I prefer Purple Stuff, but I no longer really feel any effect from any of those kinds of drinks. Then again, I’m on actual anxiety and sleep medications, so maybe melatonin and such just doesn’t register anymore.
    So, yeah, just a little summary of the soda trend that come out of the drank trend that came out of Houston.

    Doing crimes everywhere EXCEPT where you live is not a bad strategy. No one will recognize you, your vehicle, your voice. Harder to overall put you on a list of suspects. Except obviously he DID get recognized in all those places or he wouldn't have warrants. So he has a good criminal business model, he's just still somehow bad at it. Maybe that's the difference between gangsters and gangsta's, a gangster sends some random street walker to do the jobs you organize, you pay them and take the rest and it as long as the tool doesn't or can't snitch you never get tied to it. Gangsta's do it themselves and get caught eventually. Not exactly a lot of Al Capones in the hood, or if then the cops don't know about them or can't touch them and sure aren't randomly pulling over their car to search it.

    It's kinda weird to think of Chamillionaire as a one-hit wonder. I remember back in my earlier days on YT he was still fairly discussed among the southern hip hop community, but you're right, none of his other stuff charted notably. He's got some solid music on his mixtapes, def worth checking out. I loved "Internet Nerds Argue" tbh.
    Part of me is a little disappointed that Lil' Flip never got all that big outside of Texas. Being from the Lone Star State myself, I heard the guy a lot growing up (especially in my teen years) so it might be nostalgia talking but tbh he's still my favorite rapper overall. That pointless beef with TI didn't help matters either.
